We can just disagree, this is way off the player Joker is now
-
Ok reading back through the thread I don’t think we’re actually that far apart on considering Edey’s potential role if drafted — we differ more as i understand in how you perceive Edey’s skillset, you see a higher skill level than ai do, and we definitely see Joker (who I’ve watched for years) differently. Fwiw, I’d agree Edey could find a home if a team wants him for that specialized role off the bench, and Yao lite works for me — but man Yao was a genuine giant, Shaq was small next to him

He is not slow, and he’s certainly not unathletic, he’d run Edey into the ground. Pretty sure you’re not actually watching him. The opposite of what teams look for?? On the one hand you argue his skill compensates for your description of his athleticism, while on the other you’re trying to compare him to Edey, and you’re confused? Joker is one of the most highly skilled bigs the game has seen. Edey isn’t even in the same universe, his “skill” is his size, he can’t create for himself, has no handle, he can’t step out and shoot, he doesn’t break down defenses, in what world is his “skillset” remotely comparable? Again, why do you think he wasn’t getting drafted last year? He does not fit today’s NBA
-
No, Joker is not unathletic. That’s frankly ridiculous. When he first came into the League he was out of shape and much slower, while being highly skilled including shooting. Over several years particularly the last 4-5, he developed significantly in his conditioning, including running the floor and overall fitness. Does he have an “above the rim@ game? No. Is he unathletic? Of course not. He would literally run circles around the plodding Edey

Good Lord, he's the best player in the NBA, he literally dominates the League, you're killing me with this stuff. Oh well.

I don't think you really follow the NBA, Chicken. Have you even watched the Joker play? He's literally the best player in the League man. And Doncic is one of the most skilled, versatile forwards the game has ever seen. You're seriously throwing their names out here?? Hulls is one of many, many examples of players who are great in college but not right or good enough for the League, that just is what it is. Edey's ability to hang with NBA bigs is at best a question mark, it's why he was passed over last year. He is in the mold of the slow front court, non-shooting bigs of days of old. Can he move outside? Can he defend guys like Joker, Doncic, Durant, Embid, Wembanyama, or even Turner, Markkanen, etc.? Will be interesting to see if he gets drafted and is able to stick / get floor time and how/when. At best a question mark now.

Fair points until you say mediocre and worse players? The NBA is loaded with the best players in the world. It’s just a fact that many many very good college players are just not good enough, athletic enough, etc (eg Hulls) to make it in the NBA, and guys like Zubac are not Edey. Zubac would own Edey, don’t think you’ve watched him play. Edey couldn’t sniff a draft spot last year. Why is that? Can he get drafted this year? He might, in the second round, but it will need to he a team that wants him off the bench for a big body
-
Do you watch the NBA? It’s not returning to traditional bigs and it’s not going to. He might find a role off the bench on a team that wants a big body to throw at teams, but his size is not in any way the advantage it is in college
-
It’s not that he’s not good, it’s that he doesn’t fit today’s NBA (and today’s NBA bigs would / will run circles around him). Dominating as a slow big in college is a far cry from being able to play in today’s NBA
-
Yeah that’s a pretty easy “analysis” that pretty much anyone here could write up. He could try to be a Yao type (Yao was better), and yup an off bench role on a team that wants to throw that out to slow teams at rim or match against another big in the paint is possible, but it requires a team that feels it has that need and doesn’t see better prospects at the draft spot they’re looking at.

Espn plus piece, behind a paywall, analyzing Edey's possible NBA future as a carve-out specialty role playing big on a team that wants to play that style of ball: https://www.espn.com/nba/insider/story/_/id/39087340/nba-draft-notebook-edey-nba-future-bronny-debut-sleepers I don't have espn plus (like, why would I?) but as much as I don't see Edey as an NBA player in today's League, I guess I can see someone taking a flyer on him as a role playing big to throw at teams off the bench. But as a second round, not first-round pick. Will be interesting to see if some team takes a flyer on him in the 2nd (would be absolutely shocked to see him go in the first, hello, just look at TJD, who fits today's NBA much better). Seems more likely he goes undrafted and maybe gets picked up over the summer (a la Troy Williams, Yogi). Will be interesting to see.

I was just having fun with you. But my take is that Gunn pretty clearly has better upside, as he showed against UM. Leal is a great kid by all accounts, and his floor awareness and understanding of the college game is, also by all accounts, better right now, but he doesn't play because he hasn't shown the ability to play real minutes at this level. That is what it is. Gunn is kind of like Geronimo in that he has lots of promise, the question is whether he can continue to develop his DI level floor awareness with the speed of the game - slowing things down mentally, to bring his athleticism and skill all out. That's a work in progress.

^^ Agree on the hockey substitutions (and hey, I played hockey), why that's still a thing, and against a good team like Auburn, is something I've been wondering about. Also agree on the 2-foul thing, but that's not going to change (imo). Some coaches just believe in that religiously. That's too bad, it unnecessarily (imo) puts the team in position to fail in the 1st half when the depth isn't there -- and as should be clear by now to the coaching staff, the depth is not there at guard. And on Trey, I have to think he's going to break out of this slump or whatever it should be called. He's shown us for years the caliber player he is, and the decision making and assisting is still there, it's the shooting that has gone off the cliff. I do think part of it is adjusting to a more prominent or expected shooting role, while also adjusting to a new starting group / on floor chemistry. It's still early on - he can turn it around -- and that may be the key that either helps or takes away from our getting to the tourney.
