IUBB vs Army - Sunday, 11.12.23 @ 7:00 on BTN
Hoosier987 replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Not that program anymore? Yikes. Woodson would whole-heartedly disagree with you and so would many others. He has stated on multiple occasions that the next step for Indiana is to win a Big Ten Title and a National Title. Hell, he mentioned this as early as a couple of weeks ago. I believe him and so do many others. Despite, obviously what you think…We’re a top 15 program and many national writers and coaches would tell you that. -

Why would it be dang impressive? Woodson constructed this team. He built the make-up. These are HIS guys. -

Seasons can be won or lost before any games begin during the summer. Woodson constructed this team. It was clear to anyone who watched IU Basketball that we lacked guard play and scoring ability…yet he didn’t address these issues during the off-season and it’s rearing it’s ugly head. This is his 3rd year, he needs to continue an upward trajectory but he left himself a mighty tall task with the makeup of this team….and I won’t mince my words, last nights coaching wasn’t very good. This team lacks basic teaching fundamentals. -

I was literally responding to why another poster thought the other was smoking. If you notice in my original comment, I simply provided a theory of why maybe the other poster said he was a liability. I agree, there are many others who are more of a liability than Cupps. With that said, we’ve yet to see Cupps go against bigger guys. I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do. I’m confident in Gabe. -

He may mean in terms of size against Big Ten opponents or stiffer competition. I could see where Cupps could potentially be a liability on the defensive side because of his size. Gabe will be a very good player, I’m confident in that…however, it still remains to be seen in his young career if he can hold his own against stronger opponents. This isn’t a knock on Gabe either, just the reality of the situation. -

Same with Army. They have a bunch of new guys -
Watching Knecht is a kick in the nuts. The one skillset this team needs… He may end up being an All American.

Yup because he missed mostly all his jump shots plus hasn’t earned more time. I suspect he’ll be thrown more into the rotation…but it’s still TBD if it’s because he’s actually earned it or if it’s out of necessity due to depth. -

Completely lost….and he’s not a freshman or walk-on. Regarding CJ’s jump shot…not sure we’ve ever seen him knock down two in a row. They’re typically magnificent bricks. last point…Reneau had 1 rebound yesterday. That has to improve along with the fouls 50’ away from the basket…and his decision making in the last couple minutes led to an almost Reggie Miller-esque type sequence from FGCU. His sophomore leap is pivotal. From all accounts, everyone is projecting a significant leap…decision making must approve these next couple of games. -

Agreed. Mgbako really holds the key. He has the potential to win games single handily for us and I suspect he will at some point here. -

Look at the +\- below and FG% below of bottom 3. Certainly not shocked. I plead for Banks or anyone of these 3 to prove me wrong. I just don’t see it. Don’t think he’s going to be the player we want him to be. And the Walker transfer… We needed a guard/scorer…he doesn’t bring either except for length which we already have. Offense looked awful last night against a team missing their best player but that’s a product of our personnel. Hope it gets better and Banks and Gunn would certainly be the ones to make a difference but nothing I’ve seen in these first 3 games leads me to believe a significant sophomore leap is in the cards…if ever. I fear scoring droughts/3 point shooting will be a constant theme more often than not…against quality opponents…much like we’ve seen for the last several years. Rinse and repeat….and cut the mass substitutions. Banks/Gunn/Walker on the court together screams scoring drought much like we saw yesterday. Mgbako gives me hope though. -

Agreed. It’s the one glaring miss on this roster which is why I was perplexed with the Walker transfer….give me anyone of those guards on FGCU who can shoot the three over another 6-8 non-scoring, raw player. Hell, I would’ve tried to retain Bates (who went 3-3 from three in Missouri’s first game) if we weren’t sure we could’ve gotten a guard transfer. -

Not surprised. Unfortunately, CJ and Banks look completely and utterly lost still….and whatever decision they make, is usually the wrong one. Can’t help but to feel that we’re not going to see a significant jump from these guys…which sucks because if one of them could just turn into a reliable defender and scorer it would make all the difference. -

Brace yourself. It's not pretty. You will see this team has a long ways to go. Frankly, we look like a bottom tier team with lots of improvements needed. -
My Goodness…Knecht is good. Wish he would’ve come to IU…kid can play and would’ve filled an immediate need.

We look soft. Lack a post presence offensively. Still can't shoot. Bad play all around. -

this is bad. Haven't made a three, 3-9 from free throws. I would be lying if I told you all i wasn't concerned. Hell, we might pull a Louisville and lose this game. -

Scott, you’ve made it very clear about your position on the 07-08 team throughout the years. Regardless, it shouldn’t come as a shock to you, that many of Hoosier Nation found that team to be exciting — They were a dominant group that started the season 17-1 and despite a couple of bad apples…had quite a few high character guys that were easy to root for. Regardless, let’s not turn this into a bash of the 2008 team…a young man who donned the cream and crimson tragically lost his life. -

Very sad. RIP. I was at so many of those games. Tough player. Actually happened to stumble upon the below link of an interview with Eric Gordon and AJ Guyton from 2 years ago regarding that team. It was a really good listen. Here’s the the link.
