How long before some school offers a high profile player a big dollar NIL to come as a preferred walk on?

So you are equating choosing a school to country of citizenship based on an "offer" is slimy? That argument fails on so many levels 1) Every Olympic athletes is born a citizens of a given country that they are allowed to compete for in the Olympics,they have to actively switch their citizenship to become a citizen of a different country. Unless you believe college athletes should have to compete only for a state school this makes no sense. 2)The Olympics are a contest based on the athletic ability of the countries citizenship, there is no assumption that IU is represented by only Indiana citizens or that UC Santa Barbara are only allowed players from the city of Santa Barbara. 3)Interesting that the offer of money to improve your current situation is somehow slimy, while choosing a school that by education or exposure can contribute to your future ability to improve your situation somehow is a noble pursuit.

Anyone that believes that a coach should be able to make $10M/yr (Bill Self), a university can profit to the count of $50M/yr yet students should be denied the ability to make a legal profit from their years of work and be happy putting in work at near minimum wage to produce the coaches and universities millions is clueless. Yeah the students are the sleazy ones, LTFOL.

If you finalized an multimillion dollar app while at Ball St that you had been working on for years and a tech company wanted to buy it on the condition that you stay in school would you consider that sleazy? Would it be sleazy if you became disenchanted with BSU and wanted to transfer and MIT offered you a huge stipend to bring your talent there? Or would it be sleazy for Ball St to take the app that you had worked on for years and keep all the profit while in you were in school until graduation with the possibility that the app had become obsolete? The powers that be in college athletics have conditioned everyone to think student athletes should be grateful for just getting a free education. Back when coaches were making the equivalent of $150,000 in the 60's and 70's sure, but coach and university compensation has gone up 100 fold with the players getting exactly the same as they did in 1970. Between the 20 hrs/wk of allowable practice and and all the non practice activities, it is estimated they put in around 40hr/wk in season and then 20+ hrs in off season. They are working for the equivalent of around $12/hr as the primary producer of a $50M+ net revenue producing product. There is no company in the United States that has 4 or 5 executives and 13 paid workers with this kind of revenue and salary dynamic.

Why does that matter? If the goal is to be a pro and he feels his best chance to become a pro is to play in some form of pro basketball then that should be his course. If he feels he can greatly improve his game with CMW and become a mid 1st rnd pick then maybe he picks that path. I imagine a guy like TJD isn't thinking, I likely will fail as a pro so I better have one more year as the BMOC before my life as a failure.

Or they may ask themselves, how do I get better to become an NBA player that I have dreamed of becoming? A)continue to dominate lesser talent in the same college system or B)test myself daily against the best players in the world in the style of play that I will need to ultimately succeed in

TJD's decision come from a different perspective than most having the ability to bend his former pro father's ear. He will get a trusted opinion on the pros and cons. Maybe dad tells him being the BMOC one more year can never be replaced, maybe he says the NBA is grind of a job, or maybe he says grab the NBA chance by the horns. While I would love to have TJD back, I honestly don't see him getting better or improving his draft stock with one more year. I fully expected to see him extend his range under Woodson's offense and he absolutely did not. He still rarely likes to go to his off hand and the dunks he thrives on will not be there against NBA defenders. He is a great college player whose game does not translate well to the NBA.I would gladly eat my words if he came back and expanded his game, it just doesn't seem likely.

I disagree that that was the intent as the the Clemson, Bama, OSU's in FB and the Duke, UNC, UK, KU's of BB have been oligarch rich for decades, I think this was definitely a student athlete move originally, but as a side effect it has been like giving Elon Musk a unlimited perpetual tax exemption for money he had forgotten to report.

I like the opportunity for the player to improve his position, but the fact that the schools that already have infinitely more recruiting resources are now basically allowed to cherry pick players they missed on with NIL money just seems like a soon to be realized end to the Cinderella teams. They are making the small schools like the D league.

This is the sad part of the portal, guys that were keys to their team, were not limited in opportunity or circumstance, are beginning to just jump ship at any potential possibility of the chance of added exposure or promises of NIL $$. Not sure they shouldn't be allowed to, but there is tons of potential bad actors to get involved with the portal and the NIL. This almost seems like the wild west of pharma years back when they would line the pockets of doctors for scripts written for obscenely priced drugs. There needs to be some well thought out regulation of both the portal and the NIL before it makes the 1980's bag man look like a saint in comparison. Maybe 2yr minimum at original school for no sit transfer with coaching change exception. Or possibly no NIL for 1 year after a transfer.

I'm sure there is some kind of discipline that could be meted out that could satisfy everyone. Just spittballing here but how about: Thoughts?

Whether JHS is ready or not should not enter into the punishment equation. And as Woodson demonstrated, as he should have, at NW, he made his decision irrespective of it's immediate impact on the team. I see a lot of running the stadium and a suspension to start the season in his future.

I knew enough about the players from my time their in the late 80's early 90's to know the difference isn't in the players, but more the program and leadership doesn't carry the same gravitas to make the local cops treat these minor infractions more discretely. BK would have known about this situation but the public never would have.

Problem is that the B1G wants the games reffed like this is just standard post play: Teams will not be successful in the big ten playing small. Hopefully the B1G sees the complete failure in the tournament this season and starts to shift to 21st century basketball.

I had to walk 9 miles uphill through through a blizzard just to get to class, then nine more miles uphill in 123 degree heat to get back home while wearing a parka just to come home and study for 27 hours a day to get my degree and these namby panties are complaining about playing a game!!! And what's with that opposing coach saying it had an effect? Is he one of them? Does he actually know them? All I saw was a bunch of ne'er-do-wells dancing and cavorting when they should have been asleep or studying all they horrible stuff the did wrong in the game before. If the had put in those extra hours like I did, well I tell ya, there would be a 6th banner in AH come next season.

Grade depends on perspective: As to expectations for IU as a program: C- As to expectations to where the program sat 1 year ago today: B+ Keeping TJD, Race, and Geronimo and adding Bates and Johnson were all huge wins for Woodson. The defensive improvement was nothing short of Woodson's first miracle towards sainthood. The offense was pedestrian at best, but unlike defense whose success is largely predicated on design and effort, offense depends on physical skills which can be improved but not created and this team has lacked and continues to lacks shooting skills like no other team over a 5-6 yr stretch that I have ever seen, IU or otherwise. Woodson's 5 subs in thing should be left in the dumpster in Portland. And the coaching staff should have woken up with a cellphone at their ear doing what needs to be done to find some shooting talent for this team.
