General Coach Candidate News
Unexpectedflash replied to JaybobHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I don't really get this line of thinking. It's been established that no one knows anything that's going on. Until we actually hire a coach I feel like this is premature. I'm still hoping he's waiting on a tourney coach but it'd look pretty bad if it leaked that we were interviewing say Musselman while his team was still in the tourney. I guess I'm of the opinion that if one of these IU guys or Beilein was who we wanted then we would've hired them already. -

It would go along with what Chris said last night that Calbert was disappointed this wasn't a real interview. -

With how tight lipped everything has been in regards to the search, seems kind of weird for this to be announced. Feels like a way to placate those people wanting an IU guy by saying we considered one. -

Gonzaga and Arkansas are really the only other teams that play as fast as Alabama but also manage to have good defenses. Most of the other top 10 defensive Kenpom teams are playing at snail's paces. -

He just seems like someone that would thrive in this job. After Archie I've learned it takes a certain personality to be the coach here and I think he has it. Maybe he doesn't want to be in the football teams shadow. But like I said it'd be Dolson's job to convince him. That's why he makes the big bucks. -

Everyone instantly eliminates him because of the buyout and reports saying he's not interested. I just know at Buffalo he said he was going to make them the next Gonzaga and he wasn't going to leave then took the Alabama job a week later. Granted he's a long shot but so are most of the people talked about. It'd be Dolson's job to convince him to come here if he was sold on him. -

I don't see many other college teams running it -

I like that they're the number 2 kenpom defense but that's just me. I've watched 75% of Alabama's games this year so what you're saying just isn't true. They have struggled to shoot from 3 in games and have still pulled out the win. -

Someone already posted this but it's a good read. I like reading that he can change up his defense in an offseason because he saw something that wasn't working. https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/ball-oats-how-alabama-became-an-sec-powerhouse-overnight-on-its-way-to-possibly-changing-college-basketball/ -
Candidate Thread: Scott Drew (Baylor)

I hold the multiple elite eights in higher regard than Crean's one final four run. Marquette fans were happy when Crean left. That should've told us all we needed to know. -

Oats is where the game of basketball is heading. I know lots of old schoolers want the Bobby Knight motion offense again but that's just not what basketball is anymore. Oats is one of the most innovative coaches in college basketball. I want him badly. -

I'm giving him a pass those first five years but I get it if you don't. Doesn't help his team last year didn't get to play in the tourney. Don't think there's another coach out there that has been in the top 5 the for 30 straight weeks or whatever that Baylor has that would come here. -

No he's not. Petty and Jones were from the last coach. All the other key players are transfers or recruits from last year for the most part. Oats is going to be a star. I would just love it to be with us. -
Candidate Thread: Scott Drew (Baylor)

I know everyone wants a clean coach. Look at Baylor's roster the last two years. The best players are all transfers or low four star recruits. I struggle to see who he would've had to cheat to get so all these rumors about Drew being dirty seem to be just that. They've been Villanova like in their ability to develop guards recently. There wouldn't be much projection for Drew like some of these other coaches. All he has to do is continue what he's been doing recently and we'd be very happy with the results. -

Archie was only fired 10 days ago. The NCAA tourney isn't even done. If the tourney is done and two weeks later we still don't have a coach then I'd start to worry. -
Franklin is the only one I'd be really sad about losing. Stewart has never played a game for us. I think Race is replaceable and would rather have someone that can actually make a jump shot at the four anyways.

I really hope this is true. This would be the closest thing to a home run out of the realistic candidates. -
Avery Johnson is another example of a former NBA coach that flamed out in college. He had even more success in the NBA as a coach and player than Woodson did but was terrible in college. He was a very good recruiter but it didn't translate on the court. Unless you have the best staff in the country like Howard, there's just something about the college game that seems to make the transition difficult for former NBA coaches. Even our good friend Isiah tried his hand in college and was one of the worst coaches in the country during his three year stretch, never winning more than 11 games.

I am still of the opinion that we can get someone good if we open the checkbooks up. I was just thinking about UCLA hiring Cronin. Cronin grew up in Cincy, and went there for college. He was coming off a 28 win year and had 30 wins the year before. UCLA was laughed at by every media member for how poorly they were handling their search but still managed to get him because they made him the third highest paid coach in the NCAA. I'm sure many UCLA fans thought why would Cronin leave an established program for us. I think there is someone proven out there that would come if we offered 6-7 million. I know you don't like him but I'm just using Drew as an example. I still don't know if Baylor could afford to pay Drew that kind of money. He wouldn't be making under 3 million if they could. He's had flirtations with other schools in the past. I know Illinois for example was talking to him before they hired Underwood. -

As terrible as the waiting is, I hope this drags on. I want Dolson to at least sit down with those tourney coaches. Maybe they all say they're not interested but it only takes one. If Dolson talks with the likes of Musselman, Drew, or someone like Moser and decides that Woodson is still the best candidate then I'll trust him. It just worries me that there are rumors that we haven't talked to any of them. -
For every Juwan Howard, there's a Patrick Ewing or Chris Mullin that fails. It just seems like such a big risk when we need a more surefire candidate after these last twenty years.

I think people are just getting anxious due to the lack of leaks and are jumping to the worst. Last week he was the goat because we loved all the info coming out. -

Just a guess but are some of the in person people tourney coaches? They’re all already in Indiana so it wouldn’t be that difficult. Harder to track by fans like is also. -

You would think but we’re crazy people so we had to discuss Calbert for 30 pages.
