Candidate Thread: Scott Drew (Baylor)
Unexpectedflash replied to Hovadipo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I know everyone wants a clean coach. Look at Baylor's roster the last two years. The best players are all transfers or low four star recruits. I struggle to see who he would've had to cheat to get so all these rumors about Drew being dirty seem to be just that. They've been Villanova like in their ability to develop guards recently. There wouldn't be much projection for Drew like some of these other coaches. All he has to do is continue what he's been doing recently and we'd be very happy with the results. -

Archie was only fired 10 days ago. The NCAA tourney isn't even done. If the tourney is done and two weeks later we still don't have a coach then I'd start to worry. -
Franklin is the only one I'd be really sad about losing. Stewart has never played a game for us. I think Race is replaceable and would rather have someone that can actually make a jump shot at the four anyways.

Candidate Thread: Scott Drew (Baylor)

I really hope this is true. This would be the closest thing to a home run out of the realistic candidates. -
Avery Johnson is another example of a former NBA coach that flamed out in college. He had even more success in the NBA as a coach and player than Woodson did but was terrible in college. He was a very good recruiter but it didn't translate on the court. Unless you have the best staff in the country like Howard, there's just something about the college game that seems to make the transition difficult for former NBA coaches. Even our good friend Isiah tried his hand in college and was one of the worst coaches in the country during his three year stretch, never winning more than 11 games.

I am still of the opinion that we can get someone good if we open the checkbooks up. I was just thinking about UCLA hiring Cronin. Cronin grew up in Cincy, and went there for college. He was coming off a 28 win year and had 30 wins the year before. UCLA was laughed at by every media member for how poorly they were handling their search but still managed to get him because they made him the third highest paid coach in the NCAA. I'm sure many UCLA fans thought why would Cronin leave an established program for us. I think there is someone proven out there that would come if we offered 6-7 million. I know you don't like him but I'm just using Drew as an example. I still don't know if Baylor could afford to pay Drew that kind of money. He wouldn't be making under 3 million if they could. He's had flirtations with other schools in the past. I know Illinois for example was talking to him before they hired Underwood. -

As terrible as the waiting is, I hope this drags on. I want Dolson to at least sit down with those tourney coaches. Maybe they all say they're not interested but it only takes one. If Dolson talks with the likes of Musselman, Drew, or someone like Moser and decides that Woodson is still the best candidate then I'll trust him. It just worries me that there are rumors that we haven't talked to any of them. -
For every Juwan Howard, there's a Patrick Ewing or Chris Mullin that fails. It just seems like such a big risk when we need a more surefire candidate after these last twenty years.

I think people are just getting anxious due to the lack of leaks and are jumping to the worst. Last week he was the goat because we loved all the info coming out. -

Ugh if this is the list there’s a whole one person I want on it. -

Just a guess but are some of the in person people tourney coaches? They’re all already in Indiana so it wouldn’t be that difficult. Harder to track by fans like is also. -

Steve Masiello a few years back was supposed to become the USF coach but it turned out he didn't have a degree so the offer was rescinded. I think it's stupid that a college basketball coach would have to teach a class however. It's a waste of everyone's time. -
Candidate Thread: Eric Musselman (Arkansas)
Unexpectedflash replied to Hovadipo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
His personality would be a lot more annoying if he was losing but since he's winning it's looked as motivating or endearing. Some of his motivational tactics definitely make me roll my eyes. Obviously it's working though since he has had a lot of success in college. I honestly think he fits more in college than the NBA. NBA players would immediately tune him out. Here's just an example. https://www.barstoolsports.com/blog/3311544/noted-basketball-guy-eric-musselman-dressed-up-like-a-ups-driver-before-last-nights-game-to-show-his-team-it-was-time-to-deliver -

Younger I guess. Neither of them should be candidates in my opinion. I'd be extremely disappointed in both. -
Coaching Candidate Thread: Calbert Cheaney
Unexpectedflash replied to IUc2016's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Calbert is nowhere near the candidate that Juwan was. Juwan was a finalist for NBA coaching jobs. Kids know Juwan from the Fab 5 and playing in the NBA for 20 years. No one knows Calbert. He's never been as close to a head coaching job as Juwan was. Juwan probably would've gotten a head coaching job this year in the NBA. Calbert isn't a candidate if he didn't go to IU. -

I still don't think anyone actually knows anything. Feels like everyone is just throwing **** against the wall and hoping it sticks because it's been so quiet. -

I know we all love Calbert but he'd be a huge risk. He hadn't even been a bench coach this year for the Pacers until one of the other assistants resigned. -

I’d definitely want Altman over Woodson or someone of that nature. He’s won everywhere he’s been. -

Definitely could do worse than a guy that wins as much as he does. Would’ve liked him more last search when he wasn’t 62. He also relies heavily on transfers if I’m not mistaken. -

Tbf those kids were never leaving California. They’ve lived there all their life. I judge Enfield more off the non Mobley years because I think that’d be more indicative of what kind of recruits and results he’d get here. -

Maybe Tom wants to put a good word in about all the perks of being at Indiana instead of smelly old Alabama.
