(2027) - Jason Gardner Jr.
Old Friend replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
His dad went to the same high school I did....so I saw him play a lot. Seen several of junior's games as well, and won't take back what I said. I believe it and I also agree with you. -
Indiana doesn't start 3 freshmen on their offensive line like Oklahoma does. Alabama didn't tackle well and offensively they can't run it. Indiana will wear them down over 4 quarters. I even think we'll scheme and be okay defensively because (and I LOVE Stephen Daley) we're faster on defense now. Indiana's a better team than Alabama and wins a clean game.

Correct. "Junior" is a better player than his dad was. Would be a terrific get for IU. He has been VERY well coached in high school. -
It's sad to me that Indiana has become a team and program which relies exclusively on shooting well from deep to give itself a chance to win against decent teams. We are going to get absolutely destroyed in the Big Ten. DeVries right now, with this team is in way over his head, and i am sorry to say that. We just got out-scored in the second half....at home...by Chicago State. By 2-10 Chicago State. I thought we got out-hustled. I thought our shot selection was bad and our kids looked more interested in setting a 3 point record than playing good basketball. DeVries did have a chance to really fire up his fan base, but playing this style and consistently playing down to competition and getting out-hustled is not the way to do it. Indiana basketball's brand is "too big to fail." In 2024 it was STILL the 3rd highest grossing program in NCAA D1 basketball, believe it or not. Indiana needs the right coach....and one or two terrific recruiting classes/portal classes and we'll be just fine. I give DeVries a one season pass, but a good coach can get a fat kid in flip flops to play hard, and Indiana just doesn't. They're so frequently lazy, slow, weak, and deliberate or they're quick and selfish. GOD how I want to root for this team and this program, but too many years of tolerating bullsh*t from Davis, Sampson, Crean (about half the time), Archie, and my goodness how pathetically bad was Woodson....have really flattened our fan base and it's obvious.

To your point and maybe to counter it..sort of? Because we struggle in the music department... The Indiana Marching Hundred pre game show at football games is the most putrid, fabricated, cringe-worthy thing I have ever seen. NOW it's time for ZOMBIE NATION! NOW it's time for HOOSIER WIPEOUT! NOW get your hands in the air and make some noise for the BISON MAFIA!!! I mean.....God. Awful. Amateur hour. NOW it's time for everyone to line up for the bathroom!!! NOW it's time for....Good God. Can we just stop being so incredibly .....awful. We have a fantastic music school and THAT is the best we can do??

If you have to put words in my mouth or create the argument, you lose. And you have no idea what you're talking about. You're picking out a snapshot and creating what I thought so you can argue against it; and being condescending on top of it? If you want to debate actual history or basketball, I'm in. Like I said, wave your pom poms and believe a good shooting game against a team that provided zero resistance is good basketball, you should probably stick to NBA all star games. I said Saturday was awful. And it was. We moved the same way against Penn State but their defense was pathetic and yeah...we made shots. We scored 113 points in 40 minutes. I don't understand how anyone can watch that and while happy we were on the good side of it, not grasp the "why." We had the same kids on the floor 4 days later, saw a team that hustled and tried, and looked slow, weak, lazy, and soft. 18 turnovers and allowed 14 offensive rebounds and 13 steals against us. You're okay with that and think the loss happened because we just didn't shoot well? Or believe we got the same quality of shots? Hint : we didn't. And we didn't move. Or screen well. Or get good angles. Or cut with purpose. Etc. Same issues we had with Woodson. The team Saturday looked no different and UK isn't any good. This team is not going to finish any better than our last 8. Our offense is pathetic and we got completely out hustled. But you're okay with the 1 game in the last 4 with a positive result because we made non-contested shots not based on what we did but because the defense against us was awful? If you were indeed being serious, you can lose the condescension. You clearly have no expectations and don't understand the last 25 years.

Condescending comment aside.....There is a very big difference between "modern basketball" and "bad basketball.' My guess is - especially given your moniker - you don't know the difference between the two and think making shots against a team that doesn't even try defensively is modern. I would LOVE to know how little experience you have to have to watch that game last week and then two days ago and decide one game we "played" well and the next scored just half the points against a team which gave up 94 points to both Louisville and Gonzaga. Indiana scored 60. It takes an elementary school level of understanding to grasp "why," but when you focus solely on results shooting what amounted to driveway jump shots...you make the argument you just did. Modern basketball means "lots of shots that either go in or don't." That's your argument? Or maybe, given recent results, a team that doesn't move well, plays at half speed, and is lazy won't succeed unless their opponent is either just as lazy or inferior? Did you watch Saturday and just say "damn. If only we could make shots?" The 18 turnovers didn't matter to you? How about the 14 offensive rebounds Indiana gave up? Or the 13 steals they allowed? Granted....we shot it like sh*t, but are you really telling me they just didn't drop and "oh well?" That we pay DeVries what we pay him and everything is predicated on whether or not his team makes bad shots - which means early, or contested? Like I said, a trained monkey could roll the ball out with that expectation. How many winning programs can you name that play the way we played Saturday and just chuck it even on a night shots AREN'T dropping like they did against Penn State? Speaking of YouTube....you will benefit from this series. Come back and let's chat after you watch the series. Bring your pom poms.

A wretched game....however I have but one main takeaway : Scott Dolson cannot tolerate a lack of effort from this team or this coach; or be patient with him because of it. I watched Connor Enright (who I cannot stand as a basketball player) actually get out of the way when he had an opportunity to take a charge. I have watched Tucker make lazy play after lazy play, going half speed. I watch garbage shot selection. I watch an entire team fail to block out and give up offensive rebound after offensive rebound. I see lazy passes. I see no significant movement on offense. I see no connectivity. I see no leadership. I see a consistent tolerance for mistakes and turnovers. And I see a roster with no chance to compete in the Big Ten unless they make 12+ three point shots every night. Any team can move. Any team can give effort. Win or lose, I expect effort. I expect to play hard. I expect to NOT look like an intramural team firing up the first open 28 foot shot they find. (I am very sure this will be unpopular to some and I couldn't care less) If this is Darian DeVries' "look?" His leash should be VERY short. This has been several games in a row, now. The brand of basketball against Penn State was awful. Shots went it that night. That was the only difference. A quick, bad shot is a quick bad shot, even if it goes in.

Heismendoza - 2025 HEISMAN WINNER
Old Friend replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Hoosiers Football
Echoing everyone here... What an incredibly well deserved award. People get so obsessed with on field stuff, and I know the TV show goes overboard telling the back story and making these kids look as good as they can. Needless to say, Fernando Mendoza just knocked it out of the park and is easily the most significant Indiana University athlete in the last several decades. And he was only here for a single season. Wow. He is the embodiment of what a real "award" should be. But... Can we have a conversation about "humility" being used to describe Diego Pavia? Or that he dressed like a drug dealer? Or that his mom was given TV time (if anyone knows HER back story, you know how comical that is) Or that Jeremiah Love wore high top athletic shoes? Or that Julian Sayin doesn't know how to tie or wear a tie? Or that Diego Pavia DRESSED LIKE A DRUG DEALER??? -

Okay, that's unreal. Anyone here who has kids....we're good parents. I know I'm a good dad and I know all of you are. But that's the bar. No wonder those boys are....exactly who they are. I am without words. Thank you for posting. Anyone who reads that, then compares him to Diego Pavia and HIS crazy mom yet still votes for Pavia should be immediately barred from ever discussing sports ever again. -
Indiana’s success is breaking college football
Old Friend replied to Magnanimous's topic in Indiana Hoosiers Football
Personally, I love that the rest of the country - the SEC in particular - believes that "if Indiana can do it, so can they." Cignetti was a perfect storm and was both beneficiary and master of the portal and NIL. He brought 13 starters from a ranked team with him. He brought culture and expectations. He brought a familiar, successful, and experienced staff. The turnaround was rapid because of it and much bigger than any of us had a right to anticipate. What he did here cannot be duplicated. Ever. It was a one time event, managed perfectly with a very defined and singular set of circumstances. He was the perfect fit at the perfect time at the perfect place with the perfect circumstances. Lane Kiffin isn't going to do any more at LSU than he did at Ole Miss and LSU paid $70 million to find out. That will happen all over the country. And here we'll sit with everyone else wondering how in the hell we did it. They aren't paying attention to the why or the how. They care only about the "what." And we will watch them all go crazy trying to figure out what we already know. Curt Cignetti - first of all - is one of one. He's Bob Knight reincarnated....football version. The circumstances under which he came here and succeeded won't ever exist again. And it will never be "spending" that succeeds. You have to have what he does....an acute understanding of "how" and the discipline to stay with it. Anyone think Lane Kiffin can do that? He also got every move right when he got here and has continued. He is a leader and he builds leaders. I wish I had a daughter so I could introduce her to Aidan Fisher and others. I wish I were hiring and needed young people to grow and run my company. How many kids on that team will kill it professionally? I am going to truly enjoy the rest of college football chase and try to emulate what Indiana has done. The fools will never understand and I promise we will be the beneficiaries of the craziness. -
Gauging by watching yesterday, they are not better than we are. We are at least as good up front and better than any team they've seen so far on both lines. The key to me is whether or not we can get a pass rush on Sayin. We're fine against the run. But we can't let him sit back there and either throw it deep or check easily down to his tight ends. We HAVE to move him. We do that? We can win by 2+ scores. We don't? It'll be a slog all night.
-
I'll happily lead off. I watched yesterday with full intent of making up my mind on whether or not OSU is better than Indiana. They are solid. They are not a better football team. Indiana will be healthy with something to prove. OSU is coming off an emotional win with nothing to prove. As Pat McAfee would say : GIMME' THE INDIANA HOOSIERS!!!!! IU 20 OSU 17

2026 QB Cash Herrera to Not Indiana

I hope so (Cherry). He's got every tool a QB needs. -
(2027) - C Isaiah Hill
Old Friend replied to go iu bb's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
Hill is raw and needs to develop, but he will play in the NBA. Saw him twice last season and he's eventually going to be really good. -
Every coach and player on the roster is new and we have no size. You're a fool if you think the NIL and portal can win immediately in that scenario. No. You don't "have to" be patient, but it's ridiculous to use resources as an excuse for what this team is and will be. Mike Woodson wrecked the program and the culture. Curt Cignetti is the exception, not the rule and dozens of teams have terrific resources. And ALL except IU have a culture and returning players. Cignetti succeeded because he brought a coaching staff and 13 of his best players from a ranked team with him. He brought culture and expectations. DeVries didn't have that luxury and it takes a little time to develop a culture...especially one you can sell to recruits. I'd suggest patience.
