Depends who you talked to. Having high expectations with a coach that had 0 college basketball coaching experience before he stepped foot on campus would be a major risk in a lot of people’s opinion even with top 10 resources. Not sure the optics of the national media and other coaches in the college basketball world had high expectations for IU. Other coaches were pleading for IU to keep him as long as possible. Izzo comes to mind fighting for Woody to stay. Wonder why

It shouldn’t but the program still will have to grind and win to flip the narrative for this program which struggles were well before those 2 coaches. Even with a top 15-20 NIL they are going to have to show improved on court results and grind to get back in the conversation despite where fans think they should be slotted in the college basketball world

Plenty of examples of teams that were not contenders making a final 4 run. Thats why coaches say anything can happen. NC State wasn’t a contender a couple a years ago but got hot and found their way into the tourney and beat several contender team on route to a final 4

Probably starting higher at 40 than the program has finished most years in the last decade. Admin and DeVries don’t need to lower expectations for a program that hasn’t had back to back winning conference records in over a decade. Program is what it is. IU isn’t at the top of the food chain (or anywhere near it) in college basketball. Program is going to have to grind to get to where some fans extremely high expectations are for a program with absolute crap on court results over the last 10 plus years.

Splitting hairs here but I would guess unlv was the number 1 overall seed that year. They only had 1 loss heading into the tourney and IU had 4 and shared the B1G regular season with Purdue. Unlv was the AP 1 team heading into the tourney. IU was 3rd. I know if you google it AI will tell you IU was the 1 overall but from watching the old tapes I have I’m pretty sure it was unlv. Unlv was favored in the IU game. Again splitting hairs because they were both really good that year

Probably. Rabby had said for some time that Oklahoma St mattered. Allmond has a relationship with an assistant coach for them like he did with Clark. Most ignored it and probably just thought since IU was involved against Oklahoma st it wouldn’t matter in the end.

Branham weekly report suggested Oklahoma St had been leading this recruitment for a couple weeks now but with Maryland getting late visit it’s probably a toss up

Branham had is weekly report and said it’s a toss up between IU and OSU and won’t put a crystal ball in yet but said he would lean OSU if he had to pick.

Iowas fans and message boards had DeVries as their top choice and was convinced he was going to Iowa. Iowas premium boards Rabby had DeVries has their top choice on their hot board 1.0. Then DeVries told them no thanks so they moved on to their next choice. I’m sure it will all work out for them in the long run however DeVries was their top choice and definitely iowas keyboard warriors on message boards first choice

Hood-Schifino was a decommit as well before he chose IU. Langford was probably Louisville bound until they got in all that trouble.

Rumor was he was going to retire and run for something political earlier this year.
