Bracketology and Team Resumes
Uspshoosier replied to Uspshoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Let’s have some real talk about the year. I think most of the people on this board saw once the roster was assembled that there was some flags on how it would stack up in the big. Some were more vocal then others while others were more wait and see approach however still having some concerns. It was apparent once they got into the B1G regular season that they were no where near the top of the B1G. There was still a path to being a tourney team even with a flawed roster but the margin or error was small. Unbalanced schedules play into the luck of bubble teams when they get into conference play and IUs turned out not be in their favor. B1G ended up having 5 teams that are all fighting for 2 seeds or better in the ncaa tourney. IU is 1-7 against those teams and had to play 4 of them on the road. Again for a team with a flawed roster that’s tough. The games that defined ius season was @Minny, Iowa, @Usc, @ucla, Wisky, northwestern. All these teams were in the 30-75 range and IU went 2-4. For a flawed team this is the stretch that has put them in this situation and where other B1G bubble teams has taken care of business. Personally I think DeVries underestimated the grind of the B1G and the importance of a low post player in this league. In an early interview he talked about the difference from Big 12 Bigs compared to what’s in B1G. He was wrong and that’s on him for thinking he could get by with the likes of a Bailey. You just got to hope he learns from his mistake and corrects it next year. I have a feeling after the season he will be the first to admit his mistakes. This flawed roster just isn’t good enough for the SOS they eventually ended up playing and it didn’t take advantage of the games they needed to take care of to get in the tourney 1-7 against NET top 17 teams 3-5 against NET 29-75 teams (you can’t lose to Northwestern at home) B1G has a way of humbling coaches when they first get into the league (except for a few) So you just got to hope moving forward he learns from this first year and does his best to correct the roster moving forward still a path for this year but now it involves Phase 3 Who knows maybe since this roster is full of players who’s only hope in years past to make the ncaa tourney was a hot conference tourney run in March maybe they play their best ball in the B1G tourney. -

Sliding but have done just enough to earn a bid. They went 4-0 against the other B1G bubble teams. 3 of those at home. -
I don’t think they brought back as many as people think. Hoibergs son. Mast was hurt all of last year. Essigain played last year out nothing this year. Bryce Williams and Gary were there man guards last year both were seniors. I think it might seem like they did because in the portal this year they brought back a player that played for them that transferred to Rhode Island for last year. I’m guessing if you look it up most the players on this years team didn’t play in that Crown run

They definitely do. Renn is at the center of it. Watching him all year this year he pouts way more than he ever did. Last year he was the low post guy and besides fouling every other at he had a ton of touches and ended up 3 team all American. This year he got moved to the 4 and Kluff takes those extra touches he got and this year he isn’t anywhere near being an all American. Still fouls every other play though

Couldn’t tell you but he is the coach moving forward so hopefully it figures it out and if not we can be on here in 3 years comparing the next one to the last 3. Sounds like NIL will be a little more for him next year. Can only go by how each did in their timeframe and Miller didn’t have 1 win against a tourney quality team in a historically bad B1G and DeVries has 3 wins against tourney quality teams in what could be a historically great B1G( they have chance to get the most bids ever this year)

Who saw this coming. lol

B1G only got 4 teams in the tourney that year and Miller didn’t beat 1 tourney quality team and was never in conversation for a tourney bid. As you pointed out he lost to ISU at home by 20 +. DeVries first year they have beaten 3 tournament quality teams with 1 of those on the road and the B1G is expected to get 9 or 10 teams in the field. This year isn’t what people wanted but it has gone way better then Archie’s first year

Mike Young. He was his associate head coach in 2021 before Frazier joined the Illinois staff. Then he went to West Virginia for a year and then Mike Young brought him back to be his associate head coach again after last year

Reminder to people that say it’s a bad game for them to go to if IU gets crushed that the outcome isn’t as important to the recruits as it is the fans. The time spent with staff on campus is what’s important. Thomas Bryant was at a game whew MSU beat them pretty handily and I remember people saying he should have came for a different game. Thomas Bryant committed later the month

Maybe. Since Rutgers is terrible as well and below them in the NET Maryland would of needed to blow them out at home to move up -

Don’t have to worry about this one. Maryland is down 19 to Rutgers at home -

IU just has to win games to being selected however some things to keep an IU on Marquette moved to 100 overnight which means that game is a Q2 games as of today. They play DePaul today. Maryland is currently 4 spots away from being a Q2 win Wisconsin is 2 spots away from being a Q1 game. None of that matters if IU doesn’t win however if they win today and those results go ius way then all of sudden they go from only having 4 Q1 and Q2 wins to possible 7 Q1 and 2 wins with 3 of those being Q1. Something to monitor if they can win this game -

A First 4 team has made it to the second round every year except 2019 -

2019 was the only year a First 4 team has not made it to at least the round of 32 -

Yeah it is accurate for what I said. I did not say make it to the sweet 16 I said one at least makes it to the second round (round of 32 not round of 16) -

You don’t count them as a tourney win but the conferences do and the record book does. -

In basketball? Not really. Most bottom of the bracket teams to bubble teams to first 4 out don’t have much separation -

Football units are on a different level. Pretty sure IU netting the B1G over 20 mil for their championship run. 4 mil for making it, 4 mil for the quarters, 6 mil for semifinals and 6 for making the finals -
St Mary’s on a run. Up 10 with 9 min to go. MWC doing its thing late night. Unlv/Nevada in a 1 pt game and Utah st/Grand Canyon is close with min to go. Utah st up 4

In 2025 a unit was 2 mil per win over a 6 year payout cycle. More units earned equals more money for each conference members. It’s one of the main reasons the power conferences want expansion
