  1. CMW met with Rick Bozich and 2 other journalists yesterday and Bozich will have a story out tomorrow. But Bozich did relate this today on CMW's first meeting with TJD. The Kentucky Derby horses are off for at least the next 11 days, but college basketball does not believe in Pause Mode. Translation: This is a perfect time for Dr. Bo College Basketball Notebook. On Tuesday, I joined two other journalists on a 40-minute Zoom interview with new Indiana men’s basketball coach Mike Woodson. I’ll have a longer piece on what we discussed Wednesday. Here is one revealing nugget from our conversation to tip off a string of notebook items. *How Mike Woodson Convinced Trayce Jackson-Davis to Stay at IU After his first series of meetings with the IU basketball players, Woodson was dejected. Down. Frustrated. He concluded his final group meeting in the IU locker room by asking for a show of hands of the players who intended to stay with the Hoosiers. “Everybody committed except the five best players,” Woodson said. “I walked away from that meeting really dejected. I mean, I was down. “I was like, ‘Wow, how can this be? You guys are not even giving me a chance.’ “So I had to do some damage control. I had to start setting up meetings with the parents and the players and I had to tell them what was on my heart and how I felt about the individual player as a player and how I thought that player could help us from a team standpoint. Trayce Jackson-Davis had a career game in Indiana's loss to Michigan State Saturday. IU athletics photo. “I started at the top with Jackson-Davis.” In college basketball, they call this recruiting. Woodson put his trademark on his pitch. He put together a long collection of video clips of things Jackson-Davis did not do well, like use his right hand or make jump shots. He summoned Jackson-Davis and his stepfather, Ray Jackson, to his office at Cook Hall. “It wasn’t a knock against the young man, but I showed film of what he couldn’t do,” Woodson said. “We sat there for about an hour, and it finally registered. I was just waiting and waiting and waiting. “He finally said, 'Damn, coach, we’ve been sitting here watching tape and you haven’t put anything on there that I’ve done well.' “I said, 'Bingo.’ “He figured it out because I’m not concerned with what you do well. I’m concerned about what you can’t do and how you can get better to help us win basketball games and better yourself for your future ... “... It wasn’t a knock against the young man. I honestly thought I could help him make the next move to the big leagues.” Jackson-Davis will return for his junior season, part of a 13-player roster that Woodson strengthened by keeping most of the IU players while adding grad transfers Xavier Johnson (Pittsburgh) and Miller Kopp (Northwestern), plus top-50 high school recruit Tamar Bates. “(Jackson-Davis) walked out of that meeting and he came back and said, 'Coach, I’m on board,” Woodson said. “That’s all I needed to hear. I gave him the biggest hug. I said, 'Hey, man, let’s do this together. Now we’ve got to go after the rest of the guys back.'"
  2. Dan Gibbs of NY2LASports.com - Jalen Washington – 2022 – PF – Meanstreets Washington is an elite level prospect at 6’10” with all that he can do on the floor. He has great length and moves incredibly well for his size. He’s a good versatile scorer that gets it done on all three levels. He is a skilled scorer around the basket that couldn’t be stopped but also shot the ball well spotting up from three.
  3. Article on Jaden Schutt of Yorkville, IL. Good news for us is that Fife was already in contact with him while still at MSU so we're not totally starting his recruitment at ground zero. Schutt said while Indiana has entered his recruitment a little late, it is a school he would “for sure” consider visiting in some capacity, whether official or unofficial, and if the Hoosiers push hard, they’ve got a shot. “I wouldn’t count them out,” Schutt said of Indiana. https://www.thedailyhoosier.com/iu-basketball-recruiting-class-of-2022-names-to-know-illinois-guard-jaden-schutt/?fbclid=IwAR3dDLYCNf8cItuYJzVezCUbh6yjnpjiGzb3TqmHPqhLmskKsVjB1nyKsDg
  4. Kansas and UNC have both offered although exactly what they've offered hasn't been announced.
  5. Franz Wagner leaving Michigan declaring for the draft and hiring an agent.
  6. This past weekend, our IU men's golf team finished in 6th place in the B1G Championship ahead of PUke by a single stroke but it earned us a full point in the Governor's Cup competition and a 9.0 to 5.5 lead with only 2 competitions remaining.
  7. Trevor Andershock from Sunday's Hensley Run-N-Slam - Indiana Elite 2023 won the 16U division with a balanced effort. Amire Robinson, son of former Indiana player Stew Robinson, had a big game against Mac Irvin Fire. He is a powerfully built guard that is an excellent spot-up shooter. Joey Hart (2023) had a good day for Grand Park Premier 16U. He has been known as a shooter so far in his high school career, but Hart found plenty of success off the dribble on Sunday. He continues to get bigger and stronger, and that has helped his overall athleticism. Midwest Basketball Club had no rim protectors, and Hart had a field day getting to the rim and scoring. He finished with 23 points in the win.
  8. More from this past weekend. Kyle Filipowski (2022 | NY Renaissance | Wilbraham & Monson, Mass.) It’s true that we didn’t see every player in action on Saturday, but it’d be tough to bet anybody had a better day than Filipowski. In a game against the elite-level Team Final frontcourt of Jalen Duren (No. 2 in 2022 per 247Sports) and Dereck Lively II (No. 36), it was Filipowski who stole the show. The 6-foot-10, 230-pound big man did just about everything: bodied up inside against the 6-10 Duren and 7-1 Lively, grabbing four offensive boards; stepped out and knocked down three 3-pointers, with a gorgeous rainbow stroke; ran the fast break and found teammates on the move, making several other pinpoint passes in the half-court offense. That he hit all eight of his foul shots was icing on the cake. Oh yeah, and the Rens dominated Final, considered the top 17U group in the country heading into the offseason, in large part due to that frontcourt. “It’s no surprise, I know what my team is capable of,” Filipowski said afterwards. “We really played the best of the best today. I’m so proud of the guys, we played really good together and it shows at the end of the day.” By the end of the 73-58 win, Filipowski had piled up 21 points and six boards, outscoring Duren and Lively by himself. Though he’s certainly not lacking in the size department, Filipowski moves like a guard, with terrific body fluidity and athleticism to finish above the rim with ease. He said that comes from growing up with his twin brother, seven-footer Matt Filipowski (who wasn’t in attendance Saturday). “He’s always played the ‘5’ spot so I’ve had the opportunity to dribble the ball more, play around the perimeter a little bit more,” Kyle Filipowski said. “Growing up, even though I”ve been growing a lot height-wise, I’ve been trying to focus on keeping everything about me in the best shape possible.” A New York native, he’s considered a four-star recruit by 247Sports, which has him just inside the top 60 nationally. But with several more outings like that, especially during live periods, there’s no doubt that ranking will skyrocket towards five-star territory. Already this month, he’s picked up offers from Indiana, Syracuse and Rutgers, adding to a list of more than 20 offers, mostly from high-majors. He said he was hearing regularly from “at least 10-plus...I’ve got plenty of schools, too many to name. As of now I’m still waiting for Peach Jam and things to open back up so more can come and see me.” Filipowski said he already has planned official visits to Syracuse and Ohio State, as well as an unofficial visit to UConn, and that he’s trying to schedule an official visit to Indiana as well. No matter where he ends up, or how high his stock continues to rise, Filipowski said his intent is to get the most out of his collegiate experience, earning his degree before exploring any further stages. “Obviously one of my dreams is to win a national championship so I definitely want to be able to play on the biggest stage there is,” he said. “Academics are very important to me, I want to get my degree in 3-to-4 years and see where ball takes me after that.” ~~~
  9. IU basketball announces hiring of Mike Stump as team and recruitment analyst https://www.thedailyhoosier.com/iu-basketball-announces-hiring-of-mike-stump-as-team-and-recruitment-analyst/?fbclid=IwAR12nEx69Eec0SaZEFy5QNNbeWtqtwiyQ_aOcWMZxmGPGKH6IEH7Izdryqk

  11. Bossi on Xavier Booker from the Hensley Run-N-Slam - For the second time in the last month, big man Xavier Booker of the George Hill Indy All-Stars had some eye-opening moments. He’s still raw and needs to get significantly stronger, but the tools to be a big riser this spring are all there. Booker runs well, he can already step out and drain three-point jumpers at 6-foot-9 and he’s a bouncy finisher around the rim. Booker got his first high major offer from LSU in early April and it won’t be his last.
  12. Stockrisers on Jaden Schutt - https://stockrisers.com/s/343/four-star-junior-jaden-schutt-drops-32-points-updates-his-recruitment
  13. Commentary from this past weekend at the KYDA Invitational held in Scranton, PA. -- Kyle Filipowski (2022 | NY Renaissance | Wilbraham & Monson, Mass.) The most impressive player in the gym Saturday regardless of class was this 6-10, 230-pound forward, though ‘forward’ doesn’t really encapsulate his game. Sure, he can score inside and rebound, as well as face up in the high post, but he has a handle most wings would envy, able to run the fastbreak with his head up and make plays, and he’s got a gorgeous rainbow shot from the 3-point arc. His 21-point, six-rebound effort against Team Final, where he knocked down all three of his triples, was a thoroughly eye-opening outing in all aspects.
  14. Greater detail on Meanstreets Sunday win over Grand Park Premier at the Hensley Run-N-Slam. The Bill Hensley Run-N-Slam 17u Platinum champs are Meanstreets with an 80-76 win over Grand Park Premier. Jalen Washington 14 pts; 6 reb; 2 assts. A. J. Casey 15 pts.
  15. Important thing in the link below is to watch the video of Rice in AAU action this past weekend. https://www.thedailyhoosier.com/spring-highlights-class-of-2022-top-100-4-star-guard-rodney-rice/?fbclid=IwAR1wC665rVfHTNemUv_cnXkAGnOGFREwpLtr9QsQd0akLREXYwxro__1gwk
  16. Really encourage everyone to read this. Most of what we read about commits and targets relates to the game of basketball but this is a great peak into a life apart from basketball and the events that can shape lives.
  17. Foregoing his remaining year of eligibility and turning pro.
  18. Endless Motor Sports - Strong performance for 2022 Kyle Filipowski for NY Rens EYBL at the KYDA Invitational. Versatile + skilled 6’10 Forward is a walking mismatch. Good ballskills + shotmaking ability while having the size/length to impact the game in the paint. Very undervalued by mainstreams.
  19. Meanstreets win the 17u Run 'N Slam title. Kam Craft led with 18, AJ Casey 15 and Jalen Washington 14. They were 6-0 on the weekend.
  20. Trevor Andershock - Joey Hart (2023) is getting to the rim frequently for Grand Park Premier, and Midwest Basketball Club has not bothered him once he reached the restricted area. He has 13 points, but GPP trails 23-21 at the half. He finished the game with 23 pts. and 5 reb. as GPP defeated MBC. Trent Markwith of Relentless Hoops: Everything comes easy to 2023 SG Joey Hart. He filled it up effortlessly in both games I watched today, averaging 18.5 PPG. Calm, mature wing who has a well-rounded game, good size, and just goes about his business. Gets up above the rim quickly.
  21. Indiana Elite 2023 beats Mac Irvin Fire 69-55. Amire Robinson led IE with 15 and added 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Amire is Stu Robinson's son.
  22. Jamie Shaw of Rivals - https://indiana.rivals.com/news/rodney-rice-wants-to-commit-before-high-school-season-starts?fbclid=IwAR3Aq92nNazMz6QeagcH9qTbu2KkPkg5elJEQepXNr4UC9ux3WFmIABKAwE
  23. Trevor Andershock on this morning's game - Jalen Washington and Kam Craft with 14 a piece as Meanstreets hold on by 5 against Nova. Bossi on Saturday's performance -- Currently ranked No. 22 by 247Sports and No. 20 in the industry generated 247Sports Composite ranking, Washington put on an impressive display of skill and touch as he continues to evolve and adjust as a player. When he first hit the scene two years ago, Washington was a long and lanky four man with some athleticism and ability to get out in transition. Now, he’s overcome a knee injury and has turned himself into a skilled faceup player. His footwork in the post is well above average, he is a very dangerous shooter from deep and he has a presence on the floor beyond his years. The maturity he plays with is remarkable. Whether it is nearby Purdue, Indiana, Michigan State or any of the other programs chasing him, whoever gets him will be happy to coach him.
