IU’s Barr Earns Big Ten Player of the Week Honors Indiana University baseball's Cole Barr was named the Big Ten Player of the Week on Tuesday, the conference office announced. This past weekend, Barr helped the Hoosiers take down Iowa in a three-game series in Bloomington. The Yorktown, Ind. native batted 6-for-10 (.600) with a triple, two home runs, five RBI and six runs scored to help IU take two of three games from the Hawkeyes. On the season, Barr leads the team with a .340 batting average, six homers, 22 RBI and 30 runs scored. He also has seven doubles and two triples on the year. The Indiana Hoosiers will head to Piscataway, N.J. to play two games each against Rutgers and Nebraska. The four-game weekend gets started on Friday, May 7 against the Scarlet Knights at 2:00 p.m. ET.

Anitra House Returns to Indiana as the Assistant to the Head Coach A relationship that began in 1976 when Mike Woodson first came to the IU campus will be rekindled as Anitra House will assume the role of Assistant to the Head Coach for the men's basketball program. A native of southern Indiana who graduated from Silver Creek High School, she earned a bachelor's degree in secondary education/social studies and a master's degree in reading. She has completed coursework for a Doctorate and has finished all but her dissertation in language education. House first began her association with IU Athletics in 1974 as a tutor under Buzz Kurpius who was hired as an Assistant Football Coach for Academics in 1974-75. She began tutoring Woodson in 1976 as he became the first person in his family to earn a college degree. She worked under Kurpius from 1974-79 as a tutor and joined the department full-time in November, 1979 as a member of the Academic Services office. As their area took on more responsibilities, her role expanded and culminated with experience as a learning specialist, certifying eligibility, and athletic financial aid. She created and maintained an athletics database to facilitate eligibility, financial aid, and NCAA/Big Ten federal reporting including graduation rates. She retired from her position as Director of Eligibility and Systems in 2014.

Here is one revealing nugget from our conversation to tip off a string of notebook items. *How Mike Woodson Convinced Trayce Jackson-Davis to Stay at IU After his first series of meetings with the IU basketball players, Woodson was dejected. Down. Frustrated. He concluded his final group meeting in the IU locker room by asking for a show of hands of the players who intended to stay with the Hoosiers. “Everybody committed except the five best players,” Woodson said. “I walked away from that meeting really dejected. I mean, I was down. “I was like, ‘Wow, how can this be? You guys are not even giving me a chance.’ “So I had to do some damage control. I had to start setting up meetings with the parents and the players and I had to tell them what was on my heart and how I felt about the individual player as a player and how I thought that player could help us from a team standpoint. Woodson put his trademark on his pitch. He put together a long collection of video clips of things Jackson-Davis did not do well, like use his right hand or make jump shots. He summoned Jackson-Davis and his stepfather, Ray Jackson, to his office at Cook Hall. “It wasn’t a knock against the young man, but I showed film of what he couldn’t do,” Woodson said. “We sat there for about an hour, and it finally registered. I was just waiting and waiting and waiting. “He finally said, 'Damn, coach, we’ve been sitting here watching tape and you haven’t put anything on there that I’ve done well.' “I said, 'Bingo.’ “He figured it out because I’m not concerned with what you do well. I’m concerned about what you can’t do and how you can get better to help us win basketball games and better yourself for your future ... “... It wasn’t a knock against the young man. I honestly thought I could help him make the next move to the big leagues.” Jackson-Davis will return for his junior season, part of a 13-player roster that Woodson strengthened by keeping most of the IU players while adding grad transfers Xavier Johnson (Pittsburgh) and Miller Kopp (Northwestern), plus top-50 high school recruit Tamar Bates. “(Jackson-Davis) walked out of that meeting and he came back and said, 'Coach, I’m on board,” Woodson said. “That’s all I needed to hear. I gave him the biggest hug. I said, 'Hey, man, let’s do this together. Now we’ve got to go after the rest of the guys back.'"

He has great length and moves incredibly well for his size. He’s a good versatile scorer that gets it done on all three levels. He is a skilled scorer around the basket that couldn’t be stopped but also shot the ball well spotting up from three.

This past weekend, our IU men's golf team finished in 6th place in the B1G Championship ahead of PUke by a single stroke but it earned us a full point in the Governor's Cup competition and a 9.0 to 5.5 lead with only 2 competitions remaining.

Trevor Andershock from Sunday's Hensley Run-N-Slam - Indiana Elite 2023 won the 16U division with a balanced effort. Amire Robinson, son of former Indiana player Stew Robinson, had a big game against Mac Irvin Fire. He is a powerfully built guard that is an excellent spot-up shooter. Joey Hart (2023) had a good day for Grand Park Premier 16U. He has been known as a shooter so far in his high school career, but Hart found plenty of success off the dribble on Sunday. He continues to get bigger and stronger, and that has helped his overall athleticism. Midwest Basketball Club had no rim protectors, and Hart had a field day getting to the rim and scoring. He finished with 23 points in the win.

It’s true that we didn’t see every player in action on Saturday, but it’d be tough to bet anybody had a better day than Filipowski. In a game against the elite-level Team Final frontcourt of Jalen Duren (No. 2 in 2022 per 247Sports) and Dereck Lively II (No. 36), it was Filipowski who stole the show. The 6-foot-10, 230-pound big man did just about everything: bodied up inside against the 6-10 Duren and 7-1 Lively, grabbing four offensive boards; stepped out and knocked down three 3-pointers, with a gorgeous rainbow stroke; ran the fast break and found teammates on the move, making several other pinpoint passes in the half-court offense. That he hit all eight of his foul shots was icing on the cake. Oh yeah, and the Rens dominated Final, considered the top 17U group in the country heading into the offseason, in large part due to that frontcourt. “It’s no surprise, I know what my team is capable of,” Filipowski said afterwards. “We really played the best of the best today. I’m so proud of the guys, we played really good together and it shows at the end of the day.” By the end of the 73-58 win, Filipowski had piled up 21 points and six boards, outscoring Duren and Lively by himself. Though he’s certainly not lacking in the size department, Filipowski moves like a guard, with terrific body fluidity and athleticism to finish above the rim with ease. He said that comes from growing up with his twin brother, seven-footer Matt Filipowski (who wasn’t in attendance Saturday). “He’s always played the ‘5’ spot so I’ve had the opportunity to dribble the ball more, play around the perimeter a little bit more,” Kyle Filipowski said. “Growing up, even though I”ve been growing a lot height-wise, I’ve been trying to focus on keeping everything about me in the best shape possible.” A New York native, he’s considered a four-star recruit by 247Sports, which has him just inside the top 60 nationally. But with several more outings like that, especially during live periods, there’s no doubt that ranking will skyrocket towards five-star territory. Already this month, he’s picked up offers from Indiana, Syracuse and Rutgers, adding to a list of more than 20 offers, mostly from high-majors. He said he was hearing regularly from “at least 10-plus...I’ve got plenty of schools, too many to name. As of now I’m still waiting for Peach Jam and things to open back up so more can come and see me.” Filipowski said he already has planned official visits to Syracuse and Ohio State, as well as an unofficial visit to UConn, and that he’s trying to schedule an official visit to Indiana as well. Bossi on Xavier Booker from the Hensley Run-N-Slam - For the second time in the last month, big man Xavier Booker of the George Hill Indy All-Stars had some eye-opening moments. He’s still raw and needs to get significantly stronger, but the tools to be a big riser this spring are all there. Booker runs well, he can already step out and drain three-point jumpers at 6-foot-9 and he’s a bouncy finisher around the rim. Booker got his first high major offer from LSU in early April and it won’t be his last.

Commentary from this past weekend at the KYDA Invitational held in Scranton, PA. -- Kyle Filipowski (2022 | NY Renaissance | Wilbraham & Monson, Mass.) The most impressive player in the gym Saturday regardless of class was this 6-10, 230-pound forward, though ‘forward’ doesn’t really encapsulate his game. Sure, he can score inside and rebound, as well as face up in the high post, but he has a handle most wings would envy, able to run the fastbreak with his head up and make plays, and he’s got a gorgeous rainbow shot from the 3-point arc. His 21-point, six-rebound effort against Team Final, where he knocked down all three of his triples, was a thoroughly eye-opening outing in all aspects.
