Indianapolis Star: Driver who spilled drink caused rollover of high school bus on way to game The driver sideswiped a school bus carrying the Griffith boys basketball team to a semistate game in Lafayette shortly after noon Saturday, Indiana State Police said. (Photo: Jonathan Miano, The Times/AP) A driver spilled a drink on herself and then sideswiped a school bus, causing it to roll over Saturday while it was carrying an Indiana high school basketball team to a game, Indiana State Police said. All 27 passengers aboard the bus — 21 students and six adults — were taken to area hospitals, State Police said, but none of their injuries were life-threatening. An assistant coach on the Griffith High School boys basketball team was airlifted to a Chicago hospital, following the crash Saturday afternoon near DeMotte. David Garrett, a freshman boys basketball coach, was originally taken to Riverside Medical Center before being airlifted to the University of Chicago Hospital, according to an email from Griffith Public Schools Superintendent Pete Morikis. "Sadly, several of our players and coaches were injured in the accident," Morikis said. The accident occurred at about 12:10 p.m. near DeMotte on I-65, when Dominique T. Small, 23, of Terre Haute, lost the lid on her drink and spilled it on herself while driving a 2001 Kia southbound in the left lane. "She attempted to grab the drink, losing control of her vehicle and causing her to side swipe a Griffith School bus that was travelling in the right lane," according to a news release from the State Police. "The school bus after being hit went off the roadway to the west and rolled over." The bus was carrying the Griffith High School boys basketball team and staff to a state semistate game Saturday against Marion in Lafayette. Everyone on the bus was taken to one of three local hospitals in Merrillville, Rensselaer or Kankakee, Ill. People on the scene of a school bus accident attend to the injured after the bus carrying Griffith High boys basketball team overturned in Demotte, Ind., Saturday, March 19, 2016. The bus rolled over on Interstate 65 on the way to Saturday's semifinal game against Marion at Lafayette Jefferson. (Photo: Jonathan Miano, The Times/AP) “Our hearts are heavy today,” Morikis said. “What began with excitement — as the fulfillment of a dream to play in the semi-state tournament — has ended tragically. We are praying today for the members of our Griffith school family, who have been injured. “I would like to thank the good Samaritan who stopped on his way to a funeral in Wisconsin to check on the condition of our team. Mark Kadowaki is a surgeon who was headed in the opposite direction and took the time to stop and help.” Kadowaki told the Northwest Times that one person had to be extracted via emergency crew while the rest came off the bus without assistance. Kadowaki said he was en route to Wisconsin when he passed by the crash scene. Griffith High School Athletic Director Stacy Adams said everyone on the bus was receiving medical attention “for preventive measures.” The Indiana High School Athletic Association says on its Twitter account that the game has been postponed. Officials say they’ll talk with Griffith High School administrators Sunday about a possible makeup date. Per the Indiana High School Athletic Association: "The IHSAA will confer with Griffith HS administrators tomorrow about a possible makeup date & will communicate that when a decision is made." The other semistate scheduled at Lafayette Jeff between McCutcheon and Warsaw in Class 4A has been postponed until 7:30 p.m. -

From the Northwest Indiana Times: DEMOTTE — The bus carrying the Griffith High School boys basketball team to Saturday's semistate game against Marion at Lafayette Jefferson rolled over on Interstate 65 this afternoon. The bus was carrying 26 members of the Panther boys basketball team and their coaches, with the rollover occurring near the 230 mile marker by DeMotte. The cause of the crash has yet to be determined. Everyone traveling on the bus was taken to one of three nearby hospitals — Methodist Hospital Southlake Campus in Merrillvllle, Franciscan Health in Rensselaer and Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee. Freshman boys basketball coach David Garrett was originally taken to Riverside, but was later airlifted to University of Chicago Hospital. "Our hearts are heavy today," Superintendent Peter Morikis said in a news release. "What began with excitement — as the fulfillment of a dream to play in the semistate tournament — has ended tragically. We are praying today for the members of our Griffith school family, who have been injured." Mark Kadowaki, a surgeon from North Carolina, arrived on the scene shortly after the accident and helped attend to the injured. "When I arrived, the bus was upside down," said Kadowaki, who was on his way to a funeral in Wisconsin. "There were still some people trapped in the bus." Added Kadowaki, "One gentleman had to be extracted from the bus by the emergency crew. Everyone else was able to come out of the bus under their own power or with assistance." Evelyn Morrison, spokeswoman for Methodist Hospitals, said four people who were injured in the bus crash were taken to the Southlake campus in Merrillville. Two patients were 18 years old, one was 8 years old and the other was a 28-year-old person. Morrison said all four were in stable condition as of Saturday afternoon. Another person from the crash was supposed to have been taken to Methodist Hospital Northlake campus in Gary, but the person never arrived, Morrison said. It was unclear which other hospital the person was taken to instead. Kadowaki described a sense of shock from players and family on the scene, but that emergency crews remained calm and diligent. "The emergency professionals came from several jurisdictions," Kadowaki said. "They were very competent and very professional." Added Morikis, "I would like to thank the good Samaritan who stopped on his way to a funeral in Wisconsin to check on the condition of our team. Mark Kadowaki is a surgeon who was headed in the opposite direction and took the time to stop and help.” The game against Marion has been postponed. Jason Wille of the IHSAA said they will discuss the situation with Griffith administrators Sunday about a possible makeup date and time. IHSAA Commissioner Bobby Cox is present at Jasper County Hospital. -

I have seen absolutely no mention of any fatalities in any account I've read thus far. Several people have been transported to hospitals and one tweet mentioned 2 were double digit scorers for Griffith. IHSAA plans to announce sometime on Sunday what kind of contingency plan will be put in place for the postponed game. -

"Good afternoon. Good afternoon. In less than an 3 hours, fans from here will join others from around the world, and we will be launching the largest offensive barrage in the history of mankind. Hoosiers, that word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences any more. We will be united in our common interest of kicking pUKe's ass. Perhaps it's fate that today is the 19th of March, and you will once again be fighting for our basketball heritage. Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution, but from Calipari's slime. We're fighting for our 6th banner; and should we win the day, the 19th of March will no longer be known as just another day, but as the day when the world declared in one voice, 'We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on, we're going to survive.' Today we celebrate pUKe's defeat!" President Thomas Whitmore (Well, I'm pretty sure this is how the speech was originally written!)

I recall someone raised the issue about the potential slickness of these special NCAA courts. Very prescient.
