Dont know if IUphilly from Peegs is on here, but wanted to cite his name for saying this because i am stealing this because i think he nails it on the head
Some of these discussions on coaches seem a bit backward-looking. It’s like the guy is on trial for PAST coaching failures and we’re the jury deciding whether to punish or absolve.
If you look at the history of coaches that get into these situations, the only relevant question seems to be “can he get out” and still meet the program’s expectations? Most of the historical data I’ve seen paints a none-too-happy picture for coaches who have both declining recruiting trajectory and a steep win-loss drop after the honeymoon ends. It’s why on X’s and Joes and other venues, I’ve always stressed how vital it is to keep recruiting momentum throughout the early years and at least keep a reasonable trend going on the court.
The issue you run into is that the momentum that keeps building downward from losing and poor play simply builds on itself…and just adds more weight the further down you go, much like the physics of a rockslide. That may be the way Dolson has to frame it in his own head when discussing “the escape plan” with Woody.
Consider the context: You’re a sub-100 KenPom squad. You’re going to lose several key pieces that will drop your baseline even further down. The question is: How are you going to make a roster jump equivalent to 100+ KenPom spots in 45 days of the portal (15 days less than last year after NCAA rule change) when you couldn’t keep the roster momentum steady with the benefit of a honeymoon and a window of 2 full years?
I’m not suggesting there is “no way out”, but just given the history of how few coaches ever escape this scenario and how much portal success you’ll need to vault out of the building rockslide, the probabilities of a happy ending aren’t great as of today.

That whole situation is messed up. Apparently Reneau was reluctant to foul because he had 4 and knew it, woody laid into him after the fact. Reneau said he had 4 to woody and then woody said he was yelling Gallo! Gallo!....whole situation is messed up

Thank you for the answers. Now to double down on that, since this type of meeting happens regularly it seems, why should it even move the needle or pique our interest at all.

Say they did pull an amazing portal haul and somehow coached the team to where they were a final four contender. You would have zero 2025 recruits and then hope to have to do it all over again the year after. Playing the portal is good to add a missing piece or depth. Not good for full roster construction as we can probably all agree with. But Woody apparently knows better than us.

I pay for peegs and Trilly and come here. I would say I love the people here and in Trilly discord. Able to have good productive conversations with 99% of them and they are funny and good people at both places. Peegs anymore seems like a place to go if you’re totally depressed and want to join people in the pit of hell with you. And if you don’t agree with or follow their narrative, don’t you dare post anything.

I took it as, he’s got about 2 weeks to talk the money into firing Woodson. Because whether we win 1, 2 or 3 games, it shouldn’t matter one bit. But to the money and woody friends, it clearly does.

Will third the other two replies to your post. AD and HC definitely meet and it can be as often as weekly depending on the relationship. No amount of scheduled meetings between Dolson and Woody would surprise me considering their relationship and Dolson’s visibility around the program.

I would think regular meetings between AD and Head coach would be rather common.

Just based on my experience and discussions with colleagues, coaches do meet with ADs. The frequency, topics, tone, etc. all very just like they would with any employee/supervisor relationship, though admittedly the dynamic changes based on success, tenure, etc.

He just said that Dolson and Woody had a meeting today. Nothing will be decided before end of the season but the next few weeks will most certainly play a factor.
