2019 Off-Season IU Roster News and Moves

Disappointing considering how much hope there was for him as a recruit. Sitting one is probably best for his development though. He needs to spend an off-season building strength and would have been best served to redshirt as a freshman. For his sake, hopefully he can have a trajectory like Kyle Wiltjer, who credited his year offbuilding strength as the key to his Gonzaga success Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Crean is responsible for the majority of this year's contributors. Sure Moore, Smith, and Al are technically Archie's recruits, but he took the job in March. It wasn't like he had a chance to recruit for that class and bring in top talent. Everybody was committed at that point, and even if a few top guys weren't, he didn't have a chance as he hadn't been recruiting them at Dayton. The talent in Archie's 2 classes is much higher than the Crean/Archie class. In all likelihood, that 2017 class would have been much better if he had been here longer. Based on his Indiana recruiting success, he probably would have gotten Wilkes. Nobody who's defending Archie is saying it's all Crean's fault. There's no way this team should have gone through a 1-12 stretch. But it's just not realistic to expect a quick turnaround when the top recruits are all freshmen and/or injured. Our record would have been at least as good as OSU's this year without the injuries. Even as is, we were basically the same team. Mack did a great job this year, but he also had good, more experienced players. You keep pointing to UL and OSU but ignoring the fact that the situations were not similar at all. 2 years ago Louisville finished 2nd in the ACC and top 15 in the country. Last year's OSU team had 3 top 100 recruits as seniors, and a top 100 freshman. Archie took over a team that had lost 2 NBA players and a great 3 point shooters from an already bad team. It should not be surprising that its taking longer Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

He's not responsible for Moore. He was a Crean recruit. Jake was never expected to contribute this year. We can only go off recruiting rankings, but i expect Hunter and Race to be good players too. Archie has signed a total of 8 recruits. 6 were top 100 and 2 were McD AAs. He's getting players. Let's see what he can do with them before judging his coaching ability off of the prior coach's recruits. Excluding the freshmen, this year's team had 2 top 100 recruits (Smith and Davis), and Davis couldn't play like one because of his injury. This team just didn't have a lot of talent. He inherited a team that had lost its best 3 players after losing in the NIT. Then in year 1 he didn't get a chance to bring in his own players and had a missing class. In year 2 he brought in a good class that ended up being crushed by injuries with Thompson, Hunter, and Rob missing significant time. So he inherited a bad team and didn't have a chance to upgrade the talent in year one. A reasonable expectation would have been for that team to be worse than the team the year before. He upgraded the talent in this recruiting class, but between injuries and the fact that freshmen generally aren't counted on to be impact players, they didn't turn the team around. Also not that surprising... Don't get me wrong, I think this year should have gone better. But it's not like Archie is working with a veteran roster that he's had a chance to mold. His veterans are largely middling, and the young guys lack experience Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Zeisloft transferred in to get his MBA. Law school is probably more work, but the MBA program is intense too. I don't think Brunk doing law school would be impossible Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

Good teams, aside from UK and Duke, get better because they develop guys for 4 years. There's no reason to think any of the freshmen or sophomores are near their ceiling. Juwan looked like a role player after his sophomore year. We were one of the youngest teams in the Big 10 this year, generally starting 2 freshmen and 2 sophomores. These guys shouldn't be anywhere near their ceilings Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

We're definitely losing the 2 best individual players, but agreed that Romeo's loss is not as big as it may seem as his skill set didn't fit well with the team's personnel. This is not a knock on Archie, but I think he would have been more effective on almost any other team because he needs shooters around him to maximize his skill. He would have helped on a night like last night where we couldn't get the offense going, but I think the team can do well next year without him. I think it's somewhat similar to when Blackmon went down the last time we won the Big 10 title. His injury was seen as a big loss to our offense, but it wasn't. We already had a lot of shooters. Yes, he was probably our best shooter/scorer outside of Yogi, but we had other guys who could capably, but not completely, replace his skill set. This allowed other guys to get more playing time and round out the skill set on offense, and that was a really fun team. We will need guys to step up next year, but I could see a similar thing happening. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

Yes hopefully he can contribute. Romeo was obviously the crown jewel of the class, but Hunter was the one with a better chance to have a long term impact. Really hope he's ok Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

You could be right, but why would you expect a team full of freshman and sophomore to have hit their ceiling? Al has a lot of room to grow. Deron will hopefully be healthy. We get TJD and Franklin, but you could include Hunter and Race in that class too since they didn't really play this year. I expect we will either get Quinones, Beverly, or a solid grad transfer as well. For this year's team, the difference between 17-15 and 21-11 is Rob and Al being legit 3 point shooters. If they can become that, we will be good. If they stay below average, and none of the new guys can contribute there, we will be very similar to this year. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
He's had one recruiting class. He hasn't had any time to get shooters. The lack of shooting is squarely on Crean. 2 freshman were significant contributors, 1 disappointed, 2 were hurt the whole year, and 1 was always a longer term project. Not bad for a first recruiting class. Next year we have an incoming McD AA. Yes, we need some shooters, but he's not bringing in Priller and Jeremiah April. He's getting real talent Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

People don't score much on us. We just can't score. You don't end the season with those defensive metrics if you habitually have bad effort. Yes, there are some bad spurts, which isn't surprising from a young team. But this is an undersized team that has been hammered by injuries all year. We had a bad season because we were historically bad from 3 in Big 10 games, not because teams were beating us up from lack of effort (except the Minnesots game - that was bad). I don't think effort is nearly as big an issue as people make it seem. We are the #29 defense according to KenPom on the season. You don't get there without consistent effort. I think what looks like poor effort on offense is just a function of our lack of skill on that end making us look dysfunctional. Guys end up taking bad shots or making foolish mistakes because they're not skilled enough. Not that effort is always perfect, but not as bad as maybe perceived Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
