(2021) G Luke Brown to Ball State
Hillsdale87 replied to HoosierCoop's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
There is an incredible amount of hand wringing over a guy who does not have a major college offer yet. It's not like Indiana is asleep as a bunch of other schools are offering. Archie clearly has higher priorities, and all major programs appear to be prioritizing other guys over Luke Brown, so he's not on an island. It's great to root for local guys, and by all accounts Brown is a great kid and especially easy to support, so I hope he has a great career. But there's no reason to think Archie is being irresponsible here. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Thanks. That's what I meant to say. Just changed it in my original post too

Mack is getting it done, no doubt. But he took over a program that was in a great spot. Pitino was fired for violations, not performance like Crean was. The team that Padgett coached was a preseason top 15 team before Pitino got fired. There was a lot of talent there. He had a good season, although they fell apart after that Duke loss. And he's got an awesome class coming in. But the Louisville situation is not comparable to IU Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Agreed that just because a coach is starting mid-major does not mean that they're inferior. Most top coaches were mid-major coaches at one point. But the elite guys that stay at that level, like Few, Stevens, and Marshall, are/were mid-major coaches by choice, turning down top level jobs. That's not the case with Davis. Teams with big budgets and great facilities aren't interested in him. The idea that Davis's career has a better trajectory than Crean's is crazy. Davis is doing a good job at a small school. Crean just brought in a top 10 recruiting class and the #1 recruit. Who knows if he will be able to maintain the success as inconsistency was always the problem at IU, but his ceiling is much higher. I hope both guys do well. They unfortunately couldn't cut it at IU, but they seem like good guys Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

It's amazing to me when college guys can't shoot. These guys are all crazy athletes, so it's hard to understand not being able to at least be decent on an open jumper Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Yeah that was poorly said. Georgia is obviously a football school. What I meant was that it's a school that takes basketball seriously and has a chance to be good, as evidenced by Crean's first class, unlike Detroit Mercy. The fact that it's a football school doesn't preclude it from also taking basketball seriously, like Ohio State, Florida, Florida State, etc. It's not on par with those schools from a historical standpoint but is from a resource standpoint. The difference in quality between Georgia and Detroit Mercy is enormous. You're arguing semantics because the overall point is so obvious Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Way to completely miss the point. Crean is coaching at a basketball school and brought in an elite recruiting class. Davis has not been in demand since he left Indiana for a reason. He seems like a great guy, but he's lacking as a coach. Few is at a "mid-major" by choice. Power 5 schools obviously want him. Davis isn't beating back offers from Power 5s Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

There's a reason Crean quickly got another Power 5 job and Davis is at Detroit Mercy. Crean had his issues, but he's much better than Davis. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I'm all for dropping the hammer, but drop it on somebody who is actually guilty. Drop it on Kansas. De Sousa was a pawn. De Sousa being involved in this has nothing to do with whether his parents taught him discipline. He's a foreign kid who got taken advantage of. Further punishment is cruel. Mike DeCourcey said he should have been immediately eligible anywhere besides Kansas, which I think would have been a good solution. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Brian Bowen's career is completely off track because of his dad. It seems like the offending parties were Louisville, Adidas, and Bowen's dad. Those 3 got off with a slap on the wrist. Bowen Jr. Is bearing the responsibility for something it seems like he was not really involved in. Meanwhile Kenny Johnson is an in-demand assistant again. He may make the NBA, and I hope he does for his sake. But not being able to play college basketball has clearly made his life significantly worse. I'm all for punishments being levied, but they keep being levied against the people with the least power (at least with Bowen Pitino got fired, but I doubt he would have if it hadn't been the second scandal). Until they actually stop picking on kids and going after the power brokers who are the true offending parties, this is just stupid Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I'm actually glad he's eligible. Seemed like he got screwed and that his guardian was really the one caught up in the shady stuff. I don't like the idea of ruining a kid's life when he seems like a pawn. That said, the fact that KU is not suffering any penalties is pathetic Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Davis also started in a much better place. Crean started at the lowest point and built an inconsistent, but at times very good, team. Davis took over a solid team, and obviously did good things with it, but couldn't repeat the success once Knight's players were gone. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I'm not a lawyer, but I don't think it's that straightforward. It certainly seemed like LSU wanted to fire Will Wade, and I'm guessing the relationship between Wade and the AD is pretty awkward. They're going to need to have clear proof to show that Wade was cheating. Yes, we all know that the statements on the wiretap obviously indicate that Wade was cheating, but unless they can actually prove that money was delivered, it's probably not enough to hold up in court. -

Right, but the NCAA so far somehow has not actually implicated anybody for cheating yet. So even though there's clearly evidence that Wade was cheating, he would file for wrongful termination, and then either get some sort of settlement, or it would drag on forever, which LSU obviously wants to avoid. Even Pitino, who had 2 huge scandals in 3 years, took UL to court. -

Yeah. I don't blame the schools for not firing them because they'll be liable to pay huge buyouts. If the NCAA isn't going to enforce anything, schools can't really take matters into their own hands -

You're right. I had forgotten about Carton. He committed so long ago that it slipped my mind, but yeah that was definitely another miss. Obviously it would have been nice to hit on everybody we prioritized, but I still don't think the recruiting is in bad shape. We will see how things are once the 2020 guys start committing. Coming into the season, it seemed like Archie's focus was on TJD, Brooks, and Franklin/Newman. He hit on 2 out of 3. So he had 1 pretty important failure this year, but that's not out of the ordinary. The previous class was pretty much all success. He's scuffling to try to find the Brooks replacement, but he's also not settling. He could easily fill that spot, but he's proving that he's not going to spend a 4 year scholarship on somebody that he doesn't think is going to be an impact player -

I'm pretty sure Spellman was a burger boy too. Either way he was a 5*. The other guys were all top 80. Their recruiting before may have been just as good, but either way, they're recruiting elite talents. I guess they're recruiting guys that fit their system, but their system is built on top recruits. It's a lot easier to build a system when it's filled with good players Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

I've seen so many people reference the Villanova model, as if they just load up on good team guys who Wright coaches up and develops over time. That's not the case. Following the Villanova model means elite recruiting. It's not a coincidence that they've become a national power at the same time that their recruiting took a big step forward. They get multiple top 100s every year and have had multiple McD AAs recently Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

That's exactly it. Archie knows he has job security and so obviously doesn't care enough to work hard... That's how college coaches are wired. Also, what does "recruiting with a sense of urgency" look like? -

The loss of recruiting momentum seems really overblown to me. Brooks is the only one I consider a real miss. Archie was planning to fill one spot, and the plan was for that to be Brooks. But losing a guy to Kentucky is not a sign that our recruiting is suffering. It would have been bad if we lost him to MSU, but Kentucky is an elite recruiting destination. We were in on Harris and Quinones, but those were guys Archie got in on late in the game. Yes, we finished second on Harris, but I'm not sure he was ever really very interested. We weren't high on his list the first time around. It sucks to feel like we were close and missed, and Archie had to go after those guys because there was a small chance to get really good players, but missing out on what was effectively a hail mary should not be a surprise. Of course Archie needs to get some good recruits for 2020, but there's still plenty of time. Sure it would be great to have a couple guys locked up, but it's not a big deal that we don't. If we're still sitting here with no recruiting movement in November, then there's reason to be worried.
