They were an 8 seed the year before, but the team with Towns was 38-0 before losing to Wisconsin. And that team that was an 8 seed figured it out at the end of the season and made it all the way to the finals. That team was awesome, returned most guys, and then added Towns, Booker, Lyles, and Ulis. That was an incredible team. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Those 2 are likely gone. I'd be shocked if Montgomery or Quickley leave though, and they were both top 15 recruits. Hagans should come back if he thinks he can improve his shot. Herro should probably go as his stock is high, and I'm not sure what he could do to get it higher next year. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Yep. I was there. Almost 22,000 people, and I would guess about 15,000 were Purdue fans. I've been there for some big Louisville games, like the Duke one earlier this year, and I think last night's was the loudest I'd ever heard it Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Yes, probably an overreaction, although I'd still take Izzo over K if the rosters were the same. I've been really underwhelmed with the job K has done toward the end of this year. Great season record, but that's almost wholly attributable to having the best college player since at least Durant. This was the third straight game he got outcoached, but their luck ran out. Kentucky could be set up really well for that next year as they'll have Quickley, Montgomery, and possibly Hagans and Herro back with a top class coming in. That's how they won Cal's only championship. That team had multiple sophomores who hadn't been quite good enough to declare as freshman. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Izzo is such a better coach than K. It's not even close. K gets players, but MSU is so disciplined. Izzo had a plan that whole game. Duke did not. Talent almost saved them, but Izzo Drew up a great play to win it Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

We've missed on one target since then and none of our other targets have committed anywhere. Recruiting is generally slow in all of college basketball during the season. Seems a bit premature to make any judgments. Let's see who Archie gets this spring before saying anything about recruiting momentum Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

2019 Off-Season IU Roster News and Moves

Our second best shooter hits 1 out of 3, and he got worse throughout the season. I think guys can get better, but you're acting like the problem is solved by just removing high volume low efficiency scorers. Yes that helps, but that doesn't make us more dangerous from 3, just slightly more efficient. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

Your logic doesn't make sense. If one guy shoots 35-80 and another shoots 0-20, they may have combined to shoot 35%, but we only want one guy taking 3s. We had 1 good 3 point shooters and 3 bad ones who combined to shoot 35% (which still isn't high enough). That doesn't mean we have 4 shooters. That means we have 1 and 3 other guys who defenses want to shoot 3s because their shots have lower expected value than the other shots we could get. Look at the way teams are defending Duke. It doesn't matter that teams guard Barrett and Reddish at the 3 point line. They're sagging so far off Jones and Goldwire that it's clogging the lane and creating problems. Jones made them pay last game. Our bad shooters need to be able to make teams pay next year Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

It doesn't matter what the team 3 point% is if only one guy can shoot. Teams will respect that player, but no others. I agree that our highest volume should come from our best shooters, but based on results during the big 19, Green is the only player who should have shot 3s. We need multiple guys that opponents have to be up on to create driving lanes for others. Smith was not good this year, but his athleticism would get him more points if he wasn't constantly driving into packed lanes. Agreed on not sacrificing defense, which is why we saw so little of Damezi. I think people need to be patient with him though. I don't know that he will ever be great for us, but I wouldn't worry too much about his freshman year. Virginia has a guy named Jay Huff. Redshirt sophomore. He's 7'1", athletic, can shoot the 3, and move pretty well. He was a top 60 recruit. He barely plays for them though because he's still a work in progress defending the pick and roll. The pack line is not easy to learn, especially for post players. Even Hunter redshirted for them. Guys will learn at a different place depending on prior coaching, so hopefully Damezi gets it this year. He could add a shooting dimension. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

I understand aggregate production, but baseball and basketball are significantly different. Baseball is a much more individual sport than basketball. If a player's 3 point efficiency is lower than a team's 2 point efficiency, teams will not respect them. IU shot 54% on 2s as a team, and Green was the only player with an eFG above 54% on 3 pointers. That means pretty much every 3 taken by anyone except Green was a poor shot. I agree that we have a chance to have multiple guys who can do that next year, which is why I am more optimistic than most here, but we don't have any guarantees. Good 3 point shooting has such a massive impact on the rest of the offense too. Just look at last night's game. Edwards was incredible obviously, but part of the reason Virginia didn't double him is that they still had to respect Purdue's other shooters. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

It doesn't matter how many players combine to shoot 35% from 3. Teams are only going to pay attention to the 1 guy who actually shoots 35%+ on his own, and right now we know we have one such guy. Yes it will help our efficiency to not have high volume, bad shooters. But the remaining guys still aren't good, except for Green. Green was shooting 7-10 3s a game at the end of the year, and I think that's pretty close to what he should shoot consistently next year if he's getting 30+ minutes. But Phin and Durham need to be shooting 4-5 each, and making above 35%. They also need to be able to get shots off on the move and off screens. And we need to get more comfortable taking quick open 3s and 3s on delayed breaks. People get upset when Green took quick 3s, but those were often good shots. A shooter catching in rhythm is a good shot at any time in the shot clock. Teams that have advanced in the tournament feast on that shot. Even Virginia, who runs a very methodical offense, has multiple guys who are ready to pull at any time. We need multiple guys that can do that. The good news is that Al and Phin are hard workers, and I expect them to improve. But it would feel better if we already had some known commodities. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

I think he can be capable too. He's got nice form and looks pretty fluid shooting off the dribble, but the results aren't there yet. I'm not too worried about him though. Yogi was a pretty bad shooter his freshman year too. I'd imagine different level of weight training + speed of the game + being the primary ball handler is a lot for a freshman to handle. I hope he takes a leap next year Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Did you watch the OSU game? 8-10 on 3s. He's not as good as Edwards, but he can get it going like nobody else on the team. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Green is the only one of them to shoot 35%, although Al was close. Rob was 31% and Smith was 22%. So no, we don't have shooters to keep teams honest, at least not yet. I'm hopeful that Al and Rob can take steps forward. Smith's shot is broken, so he's only going to get better if he reworks his shot. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Who knows if they'll work out, but Nebraska has made back to back home run hires with Frost in football and now Hoiberg. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Purdue probably has the advantage in depth, but UVA's starters are very good. If UVA hits open shots, they'll win. Their offense has gotten them a ton of good looks in the tournament, but they've been really cold. They're never going to score 80, but they should have scored a lot more than they have the last 2 games. They've missed so many open shots. I think Guy is 2-20 from 3 the last 2 games, and at least 10 of those were very open. He and Hunter were terrible against Oregon. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Race, Jerome, Zach, and Deron were either injured or rehabbing all year, so they don’t count. Jake was never expected to play. Getting strong takes time. Rob, Al, And Juwan performed admirably. DG improved throughout the year. Damezi and Smith were disappointing, but that’s about it. I didn’t watch Damezi in high school, but I believe most in here didn’t think he would play or contribute much as a freshman. He definitely didn’t look great, but hopefully he can pick it up on defense Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Yes, because nobody at IU has gotten better under Archie... As has been discussed many times, Henry is a good player with a bright future, but we need shooters, so prioritizing one made sense. In hindsight it doesn’t look great, but the logic was fine. Henry’s progression this year has been impressive, but he’s also been able to play a pretty specific role around a lot of very good upperclassmen. That’s a great environment to learn, and he’s taken full advantage. But that’s a much different environment than our young guys have had. If Henry had come to Indiana, Archie would have been criticized for taking another slasher who can’t spread the floor. I know he’s hit some 3s tonight, but he’s made 12 all year. I agree that we can't mess with open roster spots. But I'd probably prefer signing Beverly or Quinones over a grad transfer, even though the grad transfer would provide more immediate help. That may not be an option, in which case I'd still be happy to get a grad transfer. Archie needs to focus on signing good players who will be in his system long term as that leads to sustainable success. What got Crean into trouble is that he kept desperately filling gaps instead of having a sustainable plan. Sometimes it worked out great, but ultimately it got him fired. I don't think that means we should ignore one and dones, but you can't just focus on the upcoming year as Crean seemed to do Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
I was at the Louisville games. Pretty good crowd for the PU game, but it really cleared out after that. The UVA game didn't start until 10:30. I was torn in the first game between wanting Purdue to lose, and wanting the Tennessee fans around me to be sad. They were the worst. It ended up being funnier watching them be sad. I'm going again Saturday, so hopefully I can watch Purdue lose then Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

So Green is for sure staying? That would be good news. Seemed like the switch flipped from a performance and attitude standpoint late in the season, but I was still a little nervous that he might be gone Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
