(2020) PG Ethan Morton to Purdue
Hillsdale87 replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
If a guy scheduled a visit, and then doesn't take it, I would assume that something drastic had to have happened. If he was interested enough to have scheduled a visit a couple weeks ago, what could have changed in the last 2 weeks? There's a lot of talk about recruiting momentum slowing down, and maybe that's true, but he planned his visit after our disappointing season. This is not a case where he was interested and decided to back off because he looked at this season and thought we were in disarray. There would seem to be 2 options. 1.) Archie's in home visit was disastrous, and so his feelings toward IU are changed and he now has no interest in IU; or 2.) IU has decided that they're prioritizing other guys over Morton. Either are plausible, but I would say it's more likely that Archie considers Galloway and Leal higher priorities than that he blew up what had been a good relationship. By all accounts, Morton is a good player, and so him choosing Purdue is annoying because I'd rather them only get lousy players... But the idea that priorities have changed is completely reasonable. We've been watching other PGs recently, and so some of them also may have passed Morton in Archie's mind. People on this board just freak out way too much with little to no information. Losing Brooks was frustrating because Archie clearly wanted him, so he lost in that battle. We don't even know if Morton was still a priority. It's entirely possible that Archie lost a recruiting battle on Morton too, but acting like this is a definite sign of IU decline is a bit much. -

Wasn't Morton originally supposed to be visiting IU in the next few days? If he's making the decision now instead of visiting IU, that would lead me to believe that IU has cooled on him, or prioritized Leal and Galloway. Let's see what those guys decide before completely losing our minds. -

That's why I wouldn't expect him to be a starter right away. I love Al, but LQ appears to be a much more natural offensive player with a higher ceiling. It also wouldn't shock me if Al takes another leap and he's shown good improvement both seasons so far Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

Our second best shooter is still below average. It's not a high bar to clear. I doubt he begins the season as a starter, but it wouldn't surprise me if he was there by the end of the season (assuming he picks IU of course). Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

They may not have watched him play, but he was a superstar, and he can sell that he knows how to navigate the path to the NBA in a way that almost no other college coach can. He also has NBA connections like no other coach. These guys may not remember him, but the current crop of NBA players revere Penny and will say good things about him. Having a coach in Mike Miller who recently won NBA titles with Lebron helps too. The appeal completely makes sense to me. The question is whether he can deliver on what he's selling, and we'll figure that out this year. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

Elite shooters who are also ready to play as freshmen are usually elite prospects, so there aren't likely to be any still around in April. If we are going to get a knock down shooter, which I still think we need even if some guys improve, it's best to go with a grad transfer. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

Seems unlikely that he'll be punished, but I would probably prefer more certainty if I was a prospect. It's one thing if a guy is a OAD, and so long term coaching security isn't that important. A guy like Quinones is probably a 3-4 year guy though, and so coaching stability may (hopefully) be a tie breaker in our advantage. -

Memphis seems to be leading for Precious Achiuwa right now. Would they be able to take all 3? I would guess they only take 2, which would potentially give IU an opening. I know Will Wade has been reinstated, but it seems like IU would be a much safer choice than LSU at the moment as I'd assume Wade is on relatively thin ice -

What's wrong with hoping to get paid as quickly as possible? Should his dad steer him away from making a lot of money so that he can just have fun in college? Kentucky has proven itself as a great place for showcasing talent and sending guys to the pros. I would have loved for him to come to IU, but choosing UK is the safer choice. -

Bitterness over a kid making a decision that he thinks is right for himself and puts him in the best position to be a professional is silly. He didn't owe IU anything. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
I was wrong... OSU had 4 top 100 players, and 3 of them were seniors. Last year IU had one top 100 upperclassman (Davis), and he was playing on one leg all season. Holtmann may have been lower on overall quantity, the but overall quality was not close. Comparing OSU's 2018 and IU's 2018 is tougher. IU had a roster with pretty good talent, but very little experience. OSU was low on talent, but very long on experience. The way that played out is that IU had some high highs and some low lows, while OSU was mostly consistently mediocre.

The idea that Holtmann had it worse is acknowledged by you, and I'm not sure anybody else. Most people in basketball thought Crean deserved to be fired. Most did not expect Matta to go because OSU was not a disaster. The number of scholarship players at OSU doesn't really matter. Most teams only play 8 man rotations anyway, and last year's team played 5 top 100 guys. They had really good players Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

2019 Off-Season IU Roster News and Moves

If Juwan had also shot 27-87 instead of 26-88, would that have had any impact on the season or changed the way anybody defended IU? A difference that small is as likely to be explained by luck as by skill If you removed all of Juwan's attempts and just doubled Rob's numbers, we would have scored 3 extra points over 35 games. That's immaterial Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

It's the difference of 0.1 points per game across a 30 game season, so while yes, there's literally a difference, it's not an amount that has any impact. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Any coach who could take over a team that went 18-16 the year before and then lost its 3 best players would salivate at the opportunity. Then when you consider that you also get to have a poorly ranked incoming recruiting class, well that just makes it a no brainier... The idea that this program is way behind is ridiculous. Yes, last year was a setback, and we should have made the tournament even with injuries. But as frustrating as it was, we were one win from making it. We got ahead of ourselves after a couple close wins, but the shooting was never strong enough to be consistently good. Coaches did not eat him alive. I agree that the tournament this year should be an expectation. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

2019 Off-Season IU Roster News and Moves

1 3 pointer over the course of 30 games is just statistical noise. His non-concussion numbers were about 30 shots, so that's not enough to really make a judgment on his shooting. Al was also shooting really well early in the season and his performance came back as the season went along. We really have no idea how much the concussion affected him. It's a convenient excuse for poorer play, but it's just as likely that he wore down as a freshman facing the toughest competition he's seen so far. That said, I'm not worried about him. Playing PG in the big 10 as a freshman is hard, so not shocking that shooting suffered. Yogi was a bad shooter his first year too. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

Rob and Juwan's stats were basically the same. Rob made 1 more 3 on 1 less attempt. There's technically a difference, but the impact is meaningless. Rob was a bad 3 point shooter. I expect him to get better Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
You think it's better at Kentucky or UNC? The pressure on coaches and recruits is the same at every blue blood. We had a top 10 class in 2018 and got a McD AA this year. I don't think kids are shying from the pressure. Not every person is wired the same. Holtmann is making a ton of money coaching at a good basketball school without immense pressure because football is more important. Donovan did the same thing at Florida. He had chances to leave but didn't. Guys like Calipari, Coach K, etc. Would not be happy being second fiddle on campus. All very good/great coaches, just different styles and goals. Some guys like the pressure and all the focus on them, others don't. Not a problem either way, but it just means the IU job isn't a fit for everybody. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
