If it’s not going to be Brad Stevens, Lebron James or Lebron James, Jr., I would feel comfortable with Beard as our next coach.

I just don't see him coaching more than five or six years, and if he does then he's going to be really old for a D1 coach. In either scenario, what sell can he make after his first few recruiting classes?

I don’t totally get Stevens trying to placate the Southie crowd with his Masshole comment and SNL-level stereotypes. The guy has an accent befitting the stock boy of a Terre Haute Kroger, and it’s those same Massholes that want him fired.

The only idiot out there who would give a raise to the coach of a team whose record is 20-21 is the same idiot who thinks a roster of Tatum, Brown and Marcus Smart can compete with the Nets and Lakers.

No and we're not Nebraska football either, despite the lack of recent success and a focus on our past. The main difference between us and them is the combination of continuing cultural significance of the program and having resources in our own backyard. UCLA has a lot of talent to pull from on the west coast, but college basketball doesn't mean nearly as much to its city or state the way IU basketball still means to Indiana fans. Nebraska on the other hand still means a lot to its fanbase and state, but the regional talent to pull from is sparse and therefore they need to appeal nationally as a now regional brand. The pipelines they had under Osbourne are gone, and a lot of the factors that went into their success no longer exist (shady admission standards to draw California and Texas talent, a massive walk-on program and "strength and conditioning" that was unparalleled at the time. Like Nebraska, we're a regional brand at this point. You're not going to walk around a Dick's Sporting Goods in Philadelphia or Miami or Houston and see IU apparel the way you see Duke bball, Notre Dame, Michigan, etc. But our region is strong, unlike Nebraska.

Who? He’s the best D2 coach in the country and is a Midwest guy. He’s 231-30 in the last eight seasons with eight conference championships and two national titles. He’s also 39 years old. The guy is more accomplished and consistent than any of the old, fat schlubs with sporadic success we’re now stuck with as a consolation prize. McCollum’s teams are some of the top offensively in D2 as well. I know...”are you kidding?” or “not a shot does he deserve to coach IU.” IUBB is in a weird place right now. If we’re not getting our white whale, let’s go the Ohio State (football) route and hire our Jim Tressel.

Go get Ben McCollum for $2m and use the other $5m on players.

You don’t get to a point in life where you have $10m of play money to throw around on coach buyouts if you’re not assured there will be a top level replacement.

From what I remember, the Billy Donovan stuff four years ago was a narrative driven by the internet. This is not a comparable situation at all.

I think now is as good as time as any to play "what ever happened to?", especially considering some old faces made a brief visit this week when HSN shut down. For those of you newer to this site and community, most of us started on the old scout.com forum (which I believe became 24/7). We then moved to the original Hoosier Sports Nation board, which looked just like this. BtownBanners started up some time later and some folks gravitated there from HSN, and HSN went through a bit of a makeover. The old scout/HSN crew split in different directions between the two sites, with some obviously being present on both. I decided on BtownBanners primarily because of its familiarity to the old HSN layout. HSN was led by milehi, ColonialCrester, and HoosierFaithful seems to still be running things (remember him with his RFK avatar). CCGeneral and others were here. There is still the rivals crowd, which is the worst due to the cross-contamination of other schools' rivals forums. Not sure who is still on 24/7 (peegs), but I see some old handles on HSN like Badgervol, Parakeet Jones, Indykev, and the guy with the V for Vendetta avatar. Milehi, ColonialCrester and CCGeneral all passed away recently. I saw on rivals that Snowling also just unfortunately passed... For a while we had GoColts (Old Friend) here, but I guess he got banned or is under another handle? Going way back, does anyone know what happened to oggyiu? And another guy that I randomly remember was TakeMeBackto1987 who was a huge Maurice Creek fan. Is he still around or did he follow Creek to GW?

How can any other coach realistically take this position at this point?

The PTI discussion was talked about yesterday, but they also discussed Stevens and IU on Around the Horn Yesterday. Most panelists were not dismissive to the idea.

He also is the one guy I think our fanbase will be pragmatic with regarding expectations. I’ve been lurking at other boards and a common theme from other fanbases is that if we don’t have big time success in a couple of years with him he’d be fired. We obviously think he’d have success here, but he could have a bumpy start and not draw the ire of the fanbase the way another coach could. I think part of the frustration other coaches have received and will again possibly receive is that we never really wanted anyone else since 2011.

If this isn't definitively cleared up by Sunday, I see no way it isn't Stevens.
