I think he was implying he isn't going to have a big enough boom (Banner 6), and his busts aren't going to get him fired. Though if he has any more instances with off the court issues like the last 2 years.....
-
He has done better, but he still has a ways to go. Being up 19 and letting it slip to 2 without TRYING to stop their momentum is about as bad as it gets from a head coach. Winning doesn't hide that.
-
I think this is fair. I also think it's fair for ppl to be happy we won and still be disgruntled about Crean not calling a timeout to stop the run. I was wondering why one wasn't called when they got it to 10 points.

Couple things about a few posts.... I was under the impression Newkirk came here to play PG. is that not true? Saw X mention we don't have a true PG. Will he be Yogi? No, but if he can lead the team then he will be a quality PG. Oladipo was expected to go from anyone who was paying attention to him during his sophomore season. He kept getting better and better. After the UK loss in the NCAAs, I was saying he would be a first rounder if he kept improving. Others said the same thing. Crean didn't need to replace Vic though for that team to be good. He needed to replace the 3 point shooting from Hulls and Watford. He didn't do that and the team struggled. If Crean win the Big Ten this season he will be back no matter what. Before the season started I thought this would be a two year process for Crean. I felt this team was the most talented on the conference and the only reason we were seeing a top 10 ranking preseason was coaching. Then in the second season we would see if Crean has finally gotten some consistancy. We lose Yogi and probably Troy, can Crean have the team stay in the top 5 in conference? If so, carry on with him. I really thought after Maui that we would see the swoon in Feb/March. So far we are still in first place but with 3 huge tests remaining. We need to win 2/3 of those and one must be Iowa, unless the Hawkeyes falter.

Quality Young Coaches vs Tom Crean.

I think there are many quality coaches that would take the job. There is only 1 coach that would unite the fanbase, everyone else is going to have to earn the respect of a segment one way or the other. I do think the 3 coaches in the OP would come of you are talking about a younger coach. If you want a more experienced coach in college, then I think Gregg Marshall has a tremendous track record. I also would call Billy Donovan bc he might want to come back to college of Durant leaves OKC. -

We have. When I came here and saw you were a mod I actually stayed away from any of your posts bc I didn't want to get into a pissing match and get banned. :) Anyway, back to our conversation about younger coaches vs tom Crean. If you want to have a conversation about him at Marquette we can do that in a new thread or via PM. -

Going to answer a couple responses in one post since you said my post was the most ignorant you had seen on this site in awhile. I find it funny out of everything that is posted on this site that is the post you chose to put down as ignorant, but we have had our run ins on other sites so I shouldn't be surprised. I may have mixed up the final four requirement and the coaching search for Crean bit may have been for Sampson but it was a requirement for one of them. Unless the AD was just spinning for not getting his guy. The point was having March success can't be the only borameter bc it either landed us a terrible hire in Sampson or a mediocre on in Crean. Marquette does not want to return to Crean level success. It's been almost a decade since he left and they still can't stand the guy. Before every home game they boo Tom Crean. They won't put that on their official website but it's how the alumni feel about him. Crean is viewed there like many view him here. He had 1 team that he made his name off of and nothing after. They want consistant success not just a flash in the pan. -

Yes Enfield is hot garbage for a coaching change to a program like IU. He literally has had ZERO conference success. In the Pac12 he has finished 12th, 12th, and is currently sitting at 7-5 in conference. At FGCU he finished 6th and 2nd. He got hit in March and made a run to get a promotion to USC. He will need to finish this season strong and actually win something before he should be a candidate for any historic program. -

You expect a 13 and 14 seed to advance in the NCAAs? The NCAA tournament is a crap shoot and I don't feel is a good tool to use in selecting a coach is good or not. We got stuck with Crean bc he made a final four and that was a requirement for the AD. Never mind the fact that he hasn't had consistant conference success. Like I've said before I think winning championships and consistant conference success is the best borameter for future coaching success. Actually winning conference championships and conference tournament championships vs like talent shows quality coaching. Put a coach like that in a high major program with better players and the March runs will come. The key is to have consistant conference performances. Think Bo Ryan. To expect someone who never wins his conference but makes a couple March runs to be a successful coach at a high major program is faulty logic. Look at the flameouts year after year of the "hot named" coaches who did well in March but haven't shown yearly success in their conferences. Think John Groce and Andy Enfeld as the classic examples in recent years. Both did nothing in their conferences but got hot in March. Now both are hot garbage and will be fired writhin the next couple years. -

He has won his conference 3 of 4 years. Soon to be 4 of 5 years. Can't expect more than that from a mid major program. Same conference Stevens made his name. You are pet of a tough crowd to please. -

Marshall has averaged a championship (conference or conference tournament) a year for 16 years. The guy can coach. -

Love Gregg Marshall and he has said he will only go to a major conference of its a school where he can compete. He just got a huge raise and is making $3 million plus at WSU. IU could have had him last year when he was flirting with leaving WSU bhe has won everywhere he has been. Some say he runs a gimmick defense that won't work in a major conference. He is viewed as being a bit abrasive and I don't know of IU administration would want that after dealing with Knight for decades. -

I'm not sold on Archie bc he hasn't proved it at a lower level. I'll look up Mack and add his history to the OP. -

Oakland is in 2nd place and 2 games back. They took MSU to overtime earlier this year for reference. -

If you look at recruiting at IU and compare Knight, Davis, Sampson, and Crean, then you will see there isn't much difference in talent level. Calibre of player who will stay out of trouble and go to class is another story (Sampson). But overall talent it's been pretty balanced. It's the X's and O's that have separated them. As for Bryce Drew he is a former Indiana Mr Basketball, played professionally in the NBA and Europe. That will hold some clout walking into living rooms around the state. 2017 is a key year on state as well. Having a coach who is also a former Indiana high school star walk in and say I can show you how to get to the next level and we can win championships along the way is a huge deal in my opinion. Drew has lived what these kids are dreaming about. -
Here are a few head coaches career resumes. Would you look to hire any at IU? Tom Crean 16.5 seasons as a head coach 2 conference championships 0 conference tournament championships Made the NCAAs 8 times in 16 full seasons Advanced past the first weekend of NCAAs 3 times. Finished top 4 in conference in 6 of 16 years Never played pro or college basketball 61% winning pct. Archie Miller 4.5 years of coaching, 37 years old 0 conference championships, may get his first this season 0 conference tournament championships Missed NCAAs 2 of 4 full seasons, his 1st 2 years as HC. Advanced out of first weekend of NCAAs once. Finished in top 4 of conference once in 4 full seasons. Played college at a high major program, not a pro. 67.5% win pct. Bryce Drew 4.5 seasons of coaching, 41 years old 3 conference championships, looks like it will be a 4th. 2 conference tournament championships Made NCAAs 3 of 4 seasons. Hasn't made it out of the first weekend of NCAAs Played high school ball in Indiana and a Mr Basketball, in college at a mid major and played professionally in the NBA and Europe. 71.4% win pct Edit for Chris Mack 6.5 years as a head coach, 46 years old. 2 conference titles 0 conference tournament championships Finished in top 4 in conference 4/6 years, will be 5/7. Made NCAAs 5 of 6 years Made it out of the first weekend 3 times Played collegiantly at Evansville then Xavier. 68.3% win pct Im a firm believer in consistant conference success being the best indicator for future success. Bryce Drew is the guy I want at IU if Stevens is off the table. His career is off to a great start and he is in the same conference where Stevens made his name. What do you guys think? Is there another guy you have tabbed as the "next" guy for IU?

Our history says otherwise. We are a top program nationally from a history perspective. We are the marquee team for basketball from a tv viewership standpoint as well. We also are in a state that produces a slew of high major talent on a yearly basis. Make no mistake OSU and MSU have had better runs of late BUT IU is the marquee program of the Big Ten.
-
That's the problem. Crean has 2 healthy McD All Americans and a slew of other quality players on the roster and gets smoked by a team that on paper is less talented. If Izzo was our coach, then IU is a top 3 team nationally this season. It's so frustrating that we don't have the best coaching in the conference, when we are the marquee basketball program in the conference.
-
Turned the radio on to listen to MSU make the run in the first half. Tommy boy doesn't call a timeout to stem the tide. Get back into the car and turn it on on the second half and IU is down by almost 20. Way to make halftime adjustments Tom. Can someone remind me how many McD All Marricans Tom Izzo has on his roster? How many does Tom Crean?
-
I agree. I was chatting on a Maryland message board a few weeks ago and was saying to win the conference a team can only have 3 losses. I think that will win it outright. If somehow a team gets 4 losses and wins, then it will be shared.
-
I like Archie too, let's play some devils advocate. What has he really done that is better than Crean? He has never won a conference title, never been to a final four, only finished above 5th in conference once. That sounds like a John Groce type hire in my opinion. Is this the guy you fire Crean to land?
-
Happily? Win the conference and a national title. To be honest his job should rest on him actually WINNING some sort of championship. That should be the goal at Indiana every year, win championships!! He has 3 chances a season with the conference, conference tournament, and NCAA tournament. In his 8 season he has won 1 championship. That's not enough and he needs another one this year. The roster is there to do it.
-
Win the conference and seeding takes care of itself. IU has a prime opportunity to get a 2nd title in 4 seasons.
