Daughter and SIL live in San Diego near Balboa Park. Two hours ago, they welcomed a couple...good friends that had evacuated from a threated area northeast of Santa Monica. Text said that they had just arrived and there was a lot of ash on their shoes. Do not know anything more. We were in that area about a year ago...Ventura Highway, The Getty, Santa Monica, Santa Barbara. There was a forest fire up north of Santa Barbara then. Years ago I was in Orange County and there were scorched areas that one could see adjacent to I-5. Most of that land is arid and prone for wildfires.

Why recommend the Techovorm Moccamaster? How is it significantly different/better? And why not an alternative brewer? (Nevermind...just read a really good evaluation/review.) Can I borrow $150 until my brother straightens up? He's a hunchback. That or until IU wins the 6th NC Banner... If I was going to spend that kind of money...I would also get a really cute maid with a great personality to brew it for me. But then again, how could I sell that to my wife? Hmm...could I borrow a little more from you. Should I start a Go Fund Me? By the way, I also got a scale that I will start using.

Interesting study about timing of coffee consumption and health. Thanks for posting the link. In reading through the study, I had questions about variables, sample size, source of funding, bias, peer reviews and who did the study. The study included answers to most of those questions in the 'Limitations' paragraph. Most importantly, I drink about 3 cups of coffee before and during breakfast. But, while working, many years ago...I would drink a little in the afternoon, too. As an aside, I just got an Encore Baratza grinder and it is a step up for us over the simple Burr. I've been varying the grind setting and it is on 20 at this point. Seems slightly coarse, but at 17 the coffee tasted 'dusty'. That might be due to the fine grinds. It also could be the Coffiend Artisian Blend Beans from Fresh Roasted Coffee LLC in PA. Recently we had Columbian Organic and Costa Rica Tarrazu. All are medium roasts on 12/21. My favorite so far of those three is the Columbian Organic. But some of the tasting was before we were using the Baratza. It seems to make a difference. And we are adjusting the amount of beans per cup. Taking notes in a coffee tasting journal. Previously, was using a subjective 5* max rating. Using a Cuisinart drip to brew. Just moved the Cuisinart to be right next to us at the breakfast table in order to keep the 2nd cup warm in the pot. I have determined that if I drink coffee with my famous pecan/vanilla waffles with some maple syrup...then almost any coffee gets overwhelmed.

Only one of the USC players shoots serious 3-point shots. Their center is 6-10 Cohen...but he is not that good. Against Michigan, in a USC loss, Michigan got inside and scored in the paint. Their wings, except for Cohen, are not over 6'7" and they struggle rebounding per this article: Meet The Opponent: Big Ten Newbies USC Visit Indiana They have lost to Oregon and Michigan on the road. But they beat Washington on the road. All three of those teams are good. Their first-year coach, Eric Musselman, is a good coach. He will have USC ready. Musselman was previously HC at Arkansas where he coached wins in 2/3rds of their games. He does not appreciate the excellent refereeing calling fouls in the Big Ten...while on the road. Imagine that?! One of the major issues with the Trojans was the amount of fouls that were called against USC, 15 in the second half. USC guard Desmond Claude fouled out while having a big game, and guards Wesley Yates and Chibuzo Agbo also were in foul trouble late in the game. USC ended the match with 21 fouls. After the game, USC coach Eric Musselman was asked if there was any frustration with the referees. Musselman attempted to stay calm about the foul troubles, but acknowldged there were issues. “I mean, there is, but I’m not gonna say it. I’m a first-year coach in the league you know. So is Dusty but, it’s not worth talking about, to be honest. Because there was a stretch there that we were not trying to foul,” Musselman said. “We were trying to be super disciplined and they went to the foul line. When we were way more aggressive early in the game and there wasn’t fouls.” USC Trojans Basketball Coach Eric Musselman Addresses Questionable Big Ten Referees Tickets are available and cheap on Stubhub. Are students on campus? Will there be anyone in their seats in SSAH? Will USC freeze their butts? Will coaches, fans, players and the announcers react favorably to the excellent refereeing in the B1G? IU gives USC a warm reception and welcome to our place.

You are right. There really is no downside to winning at Penn State on the road the way we did it. This is an important Quad 1 win. Did not mean to downplay that fact. IU has gotten over that hump in two games. By the way, I thought that I had read that in the last 4 games before the IU game, Penn State had not shot the 3 well. Can't find that this morning. Oh well. I am somewhat frustrated when an opponent's defense stops our PG or ball handlers and there is an inability to get the ball moving on offense. Spoiled by Quinn Buckner, Isiah Thomas, Yogi Ferrell as a frosh... But those teams had ball handlers, shooters who knew how to move and screen, and a coach that understood X's and O's....and made the best of matchups. The three point shooting and ball handling are better than we were earlier in the season. Ballo continues to get better. Mgbako broke this game open to start the 2nd half...and others contributed immediately. 14 turnovers seems kind of high, but against Penn State's defense...it is somewhat better than it would have been earlier in the season. Still not happy about the lineup with 8, 9, and 3 in it. I speculate that Woody is trying to give opportunities to those three to get over their collective humps. Or something... It is too terrible for far too long and almost killed us. We need Reneau. Just as long as he and Ballo do not clog up the offense together.

RTT: Really appreciate this post. Glad the team is playing with more hustle and getting to the right spots on offense. However, there are two things that I would like to ask about. Once across the half-court line, IU struggled at getting the ball into a good half-court offense. Secondly, Penn State does not shoot 3's well... averaging about 20% and they shot worse. At the line they shot under 60%. Seemed to me it was not because of our defense. Well, our free throw defense obviously worked./s They drove the lane. They just had a bad 3 point and free throw shooting night. So, why does IU not help Miles Rice get the ball into the offense? Penn State guards defense really was good at the top of the key. That slowed our offense down in the first half. In the second half, Mack broke it open because he got the ball quickly on offense and hit. What will happen to IU when an opponent hits shots at their normal rate of efficiency? I did not see better defense by IU in the second half. But it probably was there. Did IU improve on defense in the second half? How can IU improve that side of the equatiockn? (And why the heck does Woody put in the awful 3, 8, 9 lineups? That almost lost the game right there.)

Prediction League RESULTS Thread
Dave from Dayton replied to Str8Hoosiers's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Agreed! So very glad that I was wrong about IU losing on the road. Love that kind of bad prediction. Go Hoosiers!! And thanks, again, to those that keep this prediction challenge going and the site up and running. -
Penn State starting five likely will be Baldwin, Dilione, Johnson, Hicks and Konan Niederhauser. Dunn and Kern might be the first two off the bench. Penn State won two regular season games against IU last year. IU won the game in the B1G Tournament. Against Northwestern, last night, Penn State jumped into the lead, but Northwestern stayed with them and went ahead. Penn State turned over the ball 17 times allowing a 'pesky' Northwestern to stay in the game. Northwestern had 16 turnovers. Northwestern had 30 fouls called against them. PSU only had 17. It was tied with seconds to go. "Forward Zach Hicks led Penn State with 20 points on 5-of-8 shooting, while Baldwin turned in a unique stat line. The Nittany Lions point guard scored 17 points on 1-of-7 shooting, but he made 15 of his 16 free throw attempts while dishing out seven assists. Guard/forward Puff Johnson (11 points) and guard Freddie Dilione V (10 points) each reached double figures, while Konan Niederhauser and guard Nick Kern had nine. Dunn finished with eight." Per Penn State basketball outlasts Northwestern for 84-80 win in Big Ten play

The game is being played in the old 9000 seat arena in Philadelphia named The Palestra. Penn State men’s basketball set to write latest chapter in The Palestra’s rich history | Penn State Men's Basketball News | psucollegian.com Actually, it is not really at home for PSU. Kind of like IU playing at The Hinkle Fieldhouse Lite. Hinkle is much bigger. And it is in Indiana...the center of the universe for basketball. Penn State just hosted Northwestern and beat them 84 - 80. Penn State is now undefeated at home with 9 wins. They are 12 - 2, 2- 1. Penn State Basketball Wins 'Gutcheck' Big Ten Game Vs. Northwestern

Reneau...how is he? Is it a recurring thing? 1st half was a riot. What happened in the 2nd half to change that? Whistles? Damn refs were worse than the weather will be in a couple of days.
