IU vs Penn State Game Thread - 12:00 EST ESPN
OliviaPope40 replied to Dalton26's topic in Indiana Hoosiers Football
I can remember being young maybe 5 or 6 and sitting in the rain at Memorial Stadium watching IU and Penn State with my dad and a friend of his and his friends wife. I can remember having a blue tarp over my head and eating a box of Mike & Ike's at the game. I remember waking up the next morning and not being able to talk. -
Can we not turn this into a bashing thread.

LOUISVILLE -- Victor Oladipo's message to Indiana University basketball players isn't to simply hunker down and stay inside, avoiding any potential trouble moving forward off the court. "But you've got to be smart about what you do and realize that everybody's watching when you put on that jersey – everybody," Oladipo said Wednesday. "And if you get in trouble, everybody's going to know." Now with the Orlando Magic, former IU star Oladipo stopped in Louisville this week to play the Miami Heat in a preseason NBA exhibition at the KFC Yum! Center. After a Wednesday morning shootaround, he fielded more questions about the Hoosiers than his own game. That's the result of sophomore Emmitt Holt's dismissal in September due to an alcohol-related citation – his second off-the-court incident -- as well as a citation for freshman Thomas Bryant, a first offender who remained with the Hoosiers. They were just the latest incidents in an offseason that has seen three IU players in all released from the program. Those measures came on the heels of multiple other drug and alcohol-related issues with coach Tom Crean's roster since Oladipo's days in Bloomington. "Those guys got to be men," Oladipo said. "They need to grow up. That's the biggest thing. That's what we did. They have to do the same thing. They've got to realize that there's something way bigger in jeopardy than going out and doing what they're doing." Oladipo, the second overall pick in the 2013 NBA draft, played three seasons for the Hoosiers, guiding IU back to No. 1 in the nation during his time there. A troubled off-the-court culture didn't exist with Cody Zeller and Jordan Hulls heading up the program alongside the Maryland native. So did that trio simply make better decisions? "Yeah, you know what I mean?" he said. "Plain and simple, we realized it's much bigger than ourselves. We had fun. We were college kids and had fun, but we did it the smart way. We didn't do what they were doing, obviously. Some stuff they were doing is just crazy." Oladipo said it shouldn't be up to Crean, who has received the brunt of the criticism while his team also took an early NCAA exit last season, to monitor players at all hours. Instead, the third-year pro gave all credit to Crean and his staff for his development in college. Oladipo came out of high school a three-star prospect but quickly transformed into an All-American deft on defense and explosive on offense. "I improved drastically," he said Wednesday, and the job isn't done. A Magic starter and key piece to the franchise's turnaround, Oladipo averaged 17.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists last season. He also poured in double-figure points as a rookie. "I've gotten better. I feel better," Oladipo said. "Things I need to improve on – just being precise and not making too many mistakes and taking care of the ball, things like that. "As far as shooting the ball, it's going to go in sometimes and it's not going to go in sometimes. I'm just going to keep shooting with confidence." http://www.indystar.com/story/sports/college/indiana/2015/10/07/victor-oladipo-indiana-iu-basketball-hoosiers-orlando-magic-tom-crean-grow-up-emmitt-holt/73525746/

Cody Zeller's second NBA season didn't go as he'd planned it. The Charlotte Hornets center missed 19 of the team's final 20 games with a shoulder injury, which later was determined to be a smorgasbord of distinct but loosely related ailments. Zeller had a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder, a bone spur, and a labrum that needed surgical repair. Zeller said at media day that he's been able to practice with no restrictions for about four weeks, and that being unable to play, practice, and work out like he normally would was a difficult adjustment for him. Now, he's optimistic. "(My shoulder is) doing great," Zeller said. "I don't think I realized how bad it was until I had a healthy shoulder." Doctors took a big flap off of Zeller's right labrum to repair an abnormality Zeller said he's had since high school. The bone spur, too, was from back in high school. Being unable to practice normally meant Zeller had to adjust his workout routine this summer and focus on his lower body. "For about a month and a half after surgery I couldn't do any upper body work but I could still run and lift lower body," Zeller said. "Which is the worst stuff to do. Leg day was every day," he joked. "My lower body is probably the strongest it's ever been." Now that restrictions have been lifted, Zeller's back to working on his game. Earlier this summer, head coach Steve Clifford suggested that Zeller would be working on his 3-point shot. While he's not a great shooter from deep, that isn't unfamiliar territory for Zeller. "I shot 3's back in high school, just not necessarily in games," Zeller said. "I'm not reinventing the wheel." Still, Zeller acknowledged that there's still a lot to learn. "It's just getting comfortable with the footwork and spacing the 3 off the pick and roll. It's been a huge adjustment," he said. And it's an adjustment Zeller needs to make quickly. The Hornets have a glut of power forwards this season with similar skill sets, so if Zeller wants to find a spot in Clifford's rotation, he's going to have to prove his worth. The big man posted a VORP of 0.9 last season, meaning that while he's a slightly above average player at his position, he's still a ways from being "good." Adding a consistent 3-point shot will help him find minutes over Frank Kaminsky, Marvin Williams, and Spencer Hawes, all of whom have shown the ability to knock down shots from behind the arc at a decent clip. Spacing the floor is crucial for the Hornets, and Zeller is aware of that. "I think (3-point shooting) will help my game individually as well as the team," Zeller said. "It'll open up a lot of driving lanes for Kemba and post ups for Al." However, Zeller believes his greatest strength, particularly over his competition at the four, is his defense. He sees his role as sort of a defensive anchor — the player who calls sets and instructs his teammates on where to go. "My biggest strength on defense is probably my team defense and getting guys organized," Zeller said. "Especially when me and MKG played together — and I don't know the stats on this — but I think when we were playing together, we were the two to bring energy on the defensive end and getting guys organized in transition. At the end of the year, when both of us went down, I think our defense kind of lacked." Zeller is right. According to 82 games, the Hornets allowed 0.8 fewer points per 100 minutes when he and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist shared the floor together. While that might not seem like a significant number, the Hornets were a relatively poor defensive team last season, especially compared to the year before. Any improvement on that end of the floor is welcomed. Whether or not Zeller finds a role in the Hornets' rotation remains to be seen, though most analysts expect he'll start come Oct. 28, when the Hornets open the season against the Miami Heat in Florida. Preseason starts on Oct. 3, and that should give us a better picture of how Zeller fits into the rotation. http://www.atthehive.com/2015/9/29/9410449/cody-zeller-charlotte-hornets-media-day-2015-nba

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Behind impressive performances by the Hoosier pitchers and an all-around offensive effort in game two, the Indiana softball team split a fall doubleheader with Indiana State on Friday at Andy Mohr Field. "We are seeing very good things from our team so far," said Indiana head coach Michelle Gardner. "We will continue to develop as both individuals and a unit as we head into our final four games of this fall schedule." Freshman Josie Wood tossed a complete game in the first contest of the day, giving up just one run to the Sycamores. However, the Hoosiers couldn't take advantage as junior Erin Lehman registered the lone Indiana hit and Indiana fell, 1-0. Game two was a complete team effort as six different Hoosiers scored to give Indiana a 6-2 victory. Rebecca Blitz, Michelle Huber, Kassi Farmer, Shannon Cawley and Aimilia McDonough each recorded a pair of hits, including a pair of two-run home runs from Lehman and Farmer. In the circle, freshman Tara Trainer threw a complete game, giving up just one earned run to the Sycamores. Indiana is back in action next Sunday as the Hoosiers play host to the University of Indianapolis in doubleheader action beginning at 1 p.m. http://www.iuhoosiers.com/news/2015/9/26/SB_0926151344.aspx
