Yeah, he really did not like Cupps. To the point it almost seemed to be a personal vendetta.

There should've never been excuses.

I know they aren't, heck everyone that's seen the last 25 years knows they aren't. IU couldn't take the chance of people getting the impression that they were.

Take away the name Mike Woodson. IU fired Miller and hires John Smith, a man in his 60s that had never coached college and hadn't been a HC at all in nearly 10 years after getting fired and was sub .500 when he was a HC; everyone would call that a bad hire, if they were being honest.

I didn't say he was out of coaching when we hired him, just that there was a couple years when he was; 18-19 and 19-20 between the Clippers and Knicks. Point still stands that IU was dumb enough to hire a guy no one else was even considering for HC.

Davis's last season IU was 19-12 (9-7) and tied for 4th in the B1G and won a tournament game, he got fired. Woodson was 19-14 (10-10) and tied for 6th with no post season, and IU was afraid if they fired him people might think they were serious about winning. IU's fall is self inflicted, they gave up on expectations and started making excuses for coaches failing to perform. Davis got fired for doing better. Davis also won 5 out of 6 against Purdue in his last 3 years including sweeps in each of his last 2.

There's a reason I put might in italics. Woodson got to the tournament, and got whooped, with Miller's players and missed completely with his own so far; at least Davis can say he went to the title game with someone else's players. Woodson hadn't been a HC in almost 10 years, and was out of coaching entirely for a couple of years; no one else was going to give him another shot and there’s a reason for that.

Of the coaches we've had since Knight was fired, excluding Dakich as interim, he might be better than Miller/Davis but that's it; Crean was better and Sampson isn't even a discussion. Yeah, he's pretty lousy. I'd agree we're ready for a great coach again, but at this point I have less than no faith that IU will land one or really make a serious effort after hiring a guy solely because he played here 40 years ago.

Too bad they still have the misfortune of being coached by Mike Woodson. Yeah, last season was poor roster construction that he was responsible for but he's also a lousy coach that can't maximize what he does have.

I fully expect them to look for every excuse to bring him back unless he burns down an orphanage on Christmas Eve.

For some just barely squeaking into the tournament would be a success.

Force feeding the post, not as many 3s as people expect. Excuses out the rear the second something goes wrong. Can't wait.

Clearly some posters have woken up from a 3 year coma. I'm glad you're awake, I wish you didn't have to be subjected to whatever Woodson calls coaching.

Maybe easier than admitting that Woodson is a lousy coach that either can't, or won't, change. Which would also mean the one place stupid enough to give him another shot at HC was too stupid to move on.

Or have new players to integrate.

Some people actually think Mike Woodson, who said the 3 is not a point of emphasis, will make the 3 an emphasis. Good luck with that.

At this point would anyone really be surprised if IU hired a fictional character to be coach? I mean it doesn't get much lower than "screw it, you played here 40 years ago so you're hired".

If Stevens wasn't a 100% certainty, I'd say no it wouldn't. Without that certainty it's just "maybe we can land the white whale this time if we stick with the crappy coach another year". Sorry, you don't stick with a lousy coach like Woodson in favor of Stevens unless Stevens is a guarantee.
