Nolan Ryan is still alive too. Best living, I'd say it's probably between him and Maddux.

They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
JSHoosier replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Since RMK was fired IU has done a horrible job of hiring coaches; they fired the one genuinely good coach they had in that time. Even complete imbeciles could've lucked into one good hire in that span, the ineptitude would be kind of impressive if it wasn't so sad. -

Exactly. Considering Indiana's record of coaching hires in the last 25 years that's like being the smartest person in special ed. -

Hurley? Laughable. Let's set the fact that Hurley won at least 23 games (Woodson's high mark at IU) in 3 of his last 4 years at Rhode Island with a conference win (Woodson hasn't done that). Let's also set aside that he had college experience and his HC career wasn't over like Woodson's was. It's more than results. It's the fact despite being a so called defensive coach the defense has gotten worse every year with him. It's the fact we've continued to see the same problems that got him fired from the Knicks. It's the fact that he was supposed to be a bridge guy but has to rebuild the bridge he himself wrecked. Oh, we just missed another free throw. And gave up another offensive rebound. There's another wide open 3 allowed; but if you look closely you might be able to see an IU player in the same zip code, so progress. -

Woodson's head coaching career was over before IU called; there was no demand because he showed he was a crappy coach and they believed it. IU is in the position they're in because of IU. We fired the only good coach we've had in the last 25 years and drag our feet to fire the bad ones. We let standards go and replaced expectations with excuses. We haven't examined the hiring process that's led to lousy coach after lousy coach. We want to get back? Ditch the excuses and set and hold expectations, refuse to lower the standards; it's the coach's job to meet them not lower them to the point he can't fail. And change the hiring process because it clearly doesn't work. If we want to compete with the big boys we have to act like them. -

It might be different if he ever took ownership of failures instead of making excuses. Then again this is IU, just making a 68 team field is cause for celebration and a raise. -

This. Woodson has shown who he is, we should believe it. -

Having that much in NIL is good, if it stays around that level. My concern is that it may have been a one time thing of Woodson's rich friends trying to buy a team that he can't F up. -

Hiring a good coach to begin with would be my preference. Keeping a bad coach because the previous bad coach was kept around too long just damages the program. -

Yeah, the solution is to stop keeping bad coaches too long. Not keep giving them too long. -

Miller is awful at Rhode Island too. He's not the first coach to do pretty well at Dayton and bomb elsewhere. -

True fans are okay with Woodson's crappy coaching because he played here over 40 years ago. -

Nah, it's a janitor that watched an IU game 40 years ago. -

Also shows how bad IU has been at hiring coaches. At some point it seems they'd reevaluate their process, if they were actually trying to get it right. -

Yep. He was a journeyman for 10 years as a player. His coaching career was mostly an assistant; sub par as a HC and after the Knicks fired him his HC career was over because no one wanted him. -

I'm not just looking at his IU results. He was sub .500 as an NBA coach and his Knicks teams had the same problems we're seeing. His head coaching career was over until IU called. College is a completely different beast, coaches like Pitino and Calipari that stunk in the NBA and went back to college were already college coaches with varying degrees of success. This team will under achieve and won't be better than the sum of it's parts. It might make the tournament, but with IU that's good enough. They replaced standards and expectations with excuses; making excuses is one if the few things IU has been consistently good at over the last 25 years. -

There can be a fine line between confidence and arrogant but there is a difference. Things I've heard from Cignetti sounds like someone very confident in his system and coaching, a few comments can come across arrogant but generally just seems very confident. With his track record, albeit at lower conferences, it's warranted but he'll still adjust his style of play or incorporate new things he sees. He was also willing to speak to another IU team when asked. Woodson doesn't have that track record and so far hasn't shown much ,if any, willingness to change his way of doing things; this roster is better but it's TBD if he actually adjusts. Yet he'll refer to himself in 3rd person, says "I don't have to answer that to you or the fans", says he did his job while missing the tournament, refused to speak to another IU team and according to Chris has little to no respect for the women's program that's currently better than the men's. Woodson even had to be told to go to sectionals. -

Plus he seems to have an ego bigger than his history warrants. Referring to himself in 3rd person etc. -
Not on their website.

I've walked several miles in my hey dudes and wear them regularly, washed them a few times and they've held up. My feet have never hurt in them. I kind of want a pair of their boots.

Yep. Really should've been done this year, now it just shows if they won't move on after this craptastic year they'll ride with him until he decides he's done; I'm sure his fan club loves that no matter what it means for the program. -

He's not winning a national title, he's flat out not good enough. Watch it be somewhere between those two options, he underachieves but not so bad that it forces IU to make a move. -

I wouldn't say I want him to "crash and burn". He's just not a good coach and it's time to move on, doesn't matter where he played over 40 years ago. Part of the reason I didn't want him, aside from just not being a remotely good option, was that unless he voluntarily walked away it was going to be a messy split. Well, he didn't and it's messy. -

Might be a little different if he'd have taken ownership of the debacle. No, instead he made excuses and looked cast blame then tried to say he did his job in a season where they struggled to beat bad teams. To me he acts like he thinks (or knows) he's safe because he played here.
