Bowman Academy - IHSAA Investigation

Recommended Posts

Bowman Academy (Gary, IN) principal Sarita Stevens said that Eagles athletic director and boys basketball coach Migel Nunnery was let go from employment at the school Friday.

The IHSAA is coming to Gary on Tuesday to further its investigation of Dajoure Britt playing against Indianapolis Tindley on Nov. 26, even though Britt never attended the school and was denied eligibility by the IHSAA on Oct. 12.

Stevens said that assistant coach Tyrone Robinson will be the Eagles interim coach, and Arthur Haggard will be the acting athletic director at this time.

"He is terminated, no longer employed at our school," Stevens said. "What happened never should've happened. We need to get people in control of our athletics who understand how important academics are to this whole thing.

"We need our kids better equipped in the classroom than the basketball court. That is the direction we need to start going."

The Times broke the story on Thursday night on Britt, who was originally from Gary but then spent several years in Las Vegas, before returning home this summer. He attempted to get into Bowman but it never occurred, so he was taking classes at Gary Middle College.

Nunnery blamed the Britt mistake on Stevens, who he said kept changing her mind about whether Britt could be enrolled or not. On Thursday night he claimed Stevens told him that Britt would be allowed into the school the Monday after the Tindley game, which didn't happen and Stevens denied that claim.

The second-year coach, whose record ends at 18-13, has been out of the school since Nov. 24 after his wife gave birth to a baby girl. He said that miscommunication between him and the school's administration happened because he wasn't in the building.

"We've had some issues with him coming in," Nunnery said Thursday night. "I was told after the Crown Point game that he was good to go. I got to the Tindley game about five minutes before tip off due to my baby, and we played him because I thought he was okay to play.

"The office told me one thing one day, and something else the next day. We did some things improperly and this makes me look like an idiot."

Stevens said this situation has been embarrassing and the administration is serious about correcting this issue.
