General Coach Candidate News
PartyintheVillas replied to JaybobHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I cannot speak for anyone else, but for me it's using him as a reference and reliable source of information. He's not reliable and his information is basic. I am not bashing Rabby as much as I am pointing out he is not really an authority. Personally, separate from the above, I think Rabby talks down to his audience about basketball when his specific basketball knowledge is fairly average. I believe he's overly sensitive when he is pointed out as wrong, but really was irresponsible with information in the first place. Lastly for this message, after the Hysterics came on board there is a circus and performer like attitude I think he has taken on rather than a professional journalist. I used to believe Rabby was a pro, but now he's kind of just another blogger. -

Rabby is posting for drama and enagagement as much as he is for real journalism. His job is to drive subs for Peegs. -

Then given his background and possible issues, why wouldn’t we hire someone else? -

Then why is only Beard an option? -

Bunch of other failures on that list as head coaches. Coaches with RMK connections have failed more than succeeded. Also, Beard's team culture is not the same at Knight's. He just coached him with for a brief time, like dozens of others who have mostly failed. Most coaches fail regardless of coaching tree. Anything connected to Bob Knight is a non sequitur. -

Yep, that was my point. People love the Chris Beard/RMK connection like that makes him RMK II. The RMK connection has not helped a dozen coaches. It's something that doesn't matter at all if someone has it or doesn't. -

I can understand this take, it’s a gamble. I’m not convinced he can be a CEO as much as a basketball coach though. Indiana requires that, and I’d like proof first. -

Bob Knight didn’t work at Indiana after 1993. He wouldn’t work here today. It’s 2025. Hanging on to Bob Knight culture has been part of the problem at times. Many coaches have connections to Bob knight and have failed: Mike Woodson, Randy Wittman, Isiah Thomas, Pat Knight, etc. maybe it was just that Bob knight was a basketball genius in the 70s and 80s. -

That's still not evidence of reduced risk. It's a single, anecdotal point of data. -

So we have only 1 data point, and in a different sport in a different era? That's not great evidence. I fact, that's pretty terrible evidence. -

Then why haven't more championship High School, NAIA, D3, and D2 coaches gone on to win more D1 championships? -
Chris Beard - Coaching Candidate
PartyintheVillas replied to Hovadipo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
What about Beard would be uniquely Indiana? The man has never lived here or coached in Indiana. He's built the same culture at Texas Tech, Texas, and Ole Miss. -

There are far more failures than successes so many more so it's easier to anecdotally point out the successes. If we're using data in this way, a mid major hire would be extremely risky. You have to 100% know, without a doubt, it's a winning bet. -

Yeah I could definitely see a path to me wearing that "We're Back" shirt quickly, but I would want to wait and see a minute. -

Cronin always finishes in the top half of the conference and mostly top 4 as well. I wouldn't hate a Cronin hire, but I wouldn't be busting out my "We're Back" shirt yet either. -

Or it's time to go find another forum. You aren't going to force through sheer will your opinion on everyone else. Either it's being an antagonist you love, or you're in the wrong group. -

His connection to RMK is a nice story for me, but it doesn't move the needle much. Mike Davis, Mike Woodson, Randy Wittman, Dan Dakich, Isiah Thomas, and Pat Knight all had RMK connections, too. I love his desire for the job, and it does mean something to me. Although, he'd still be at Texas over IU if they let him. Also, credible DV allegations and a possible substance abuse problem not addressed just scream no unless he starts to really take responsibility for those issues and shows real growth ala Steve Sarkisian. -

Would the same people be ok with a heavily religious Muslim coach who preached Islam to the team? I actually don't think I have a problem with Scott Drew's "religiousness." I actually had a good friend who was an assistant for him at Valpo. There was a lot of talk but the actions were not as true to the word we'll say. I think some of it is for image and PR, which can help win fans in the South and Midwest, and definitely in Indiana. Religion is being used in this country right now as a weapon at times and a shield at times though, so I'm a little sensitive about it, admittedly. -

I have no problems with people who are deeply religious personally. I have no problem with people stating their beliefs. The problem is when religious people think they have the only truth and force it on others. If someone can be personally deeply religious and respect others' different religious beliefs, I'm 100% good. One of my best friends is a deeply religious Catholic and I am a staunch agnositic. We have respect for one another and each other's journey to beliefs that cannot be proven.
