I'm starting to suspect that your name isn't actually Barrel Rick. -
(C) Kel 'el Ware - COMMITTED TO INDIANA
go iu bb replied to Chris007's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
He barely played. He kept getting injured. -
IMO, all 3 years his teams have played at a level which is less than the sum of their parts. They just seemed like better years than they were because Miller was his opening act and after him it's not hard to look good.
-
Right. When he was hired he talked about a 4-out offense then immediately reneged on that. "He has TJD" was the excuse. So people expected something different last year only to get... surprise, surprise... more the same except without TJD.
-
He has his chance since he didn't get fired. You seem to be trying to tell people they are wrong to be skeptical of his coaching. You're not going to change the minds of anyone with your excuses. The team next year will either convince people or not, but you won't no matter how much you defend Woodson. Also, it's not just last year. Even his first two seasons, while better than Miler (not hard), didn't exactly build confidence that he could do the job well. So this isn't just 1 bad year and people turned on him. This is people unconvinced through 2 years then last year. To add to the disaster that was last year, he repeatedly refused to take any blame for it, always blaming others and often throwing the players under the bus. You like to make it seem that last year was the 1st year that there were complaints about the offense and not taking enough 3-point shots. That has been consistent under Woodson. In '22-'23, they were 48th in 3-point percentage but 341st (!) in attempts. Should they have been taking more 3-pointers that year? Absolutely. You like to point out Purdue and their shooting. They had Edey which tremendously helped their outside shooting. IU had TJD which had a similar effect. They were able to shoot well despite Woodson's scheme, not because of it. ("It's not my job to get him shots.") This showed last year. So not only did he not get better guards, he didn't adjust his scheme to compensate for the ones he had.
-
Psst... TJD was the all time great that is being talked about here.
-
The floor is 22 wins? That seems pretty low for what we're being told is such a great team. Is that just the regular season or the total wins including the post season tournaments?
-
Give them a break. They only had 2 years before last to evaluate him.
-
So you're saying Woodson is the best that IU can get? That isn't a very compelling argument. He didn't even make a top 50 list that came out after the season. That means that there are plenty of coaches out there that are better than him even if they aren't the caliber of Hurley or Stevens.

The Basketball Tournament 2024 - Assembly Ball
go iu bb replied to Hovadipo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Way to jinx them, @OliviaPope40. lol -
That is quite different than not letting someone wearing a fire the coach shirt into AH.
-
I think the probability of him not starting 2 bigs at the beginning of the season is so small that it's practically 0.
-
The few (4? 5?) games he played at the end of his senior season will the only significant playing Newton will have seen in over 2 years. He might be physically ready (at least fully healed) this year but I still wouldn't expect too much of him this year.
-
That makes more sense. Dropping it from 91% on 24 attempts (not a small sample) down to 58% would be terrible shooting in those other games. Did you accidentally put a very large number into the attempts sum?
-
You're reading it wrong. Might be getting rendered incorrectly on whatever you're viewing this site on. On that day, he hit 2 of 4 3-pointers and was 7 of 8 on FT. So you're looking at the 3PA and FTM columns.
-
Yeah, they all appear to be off. This only the FT, I didn't check the other percentages. These are only for the listed games so maybe the percentages includes games not shown, but that would mean that Mullins FT shooting in those other games was horrendous. Moreno: 13/22 is 59% Mullins: 22/24 is over 91%. Sisley: 23/18 is 72%.

The new Adidas deal is almost done. Unless I'm misunderstanding something it doesn't look as good as the previous deal. 10 years, $54M for this deal versus 8 years, $53.6M from the previous deal. Unless there are ways to increase that amount, that's over $1M/year less. https://www.thedailyhoosier.com/iu-athletics-and-adidas-finalize-10-year-contract-extension/
-
So if you have a bad year? Fired/demoted. - This already happens. They ride the bench or transfer. Unionization is a bridge too far for me though. Once they demand double pay to play on holidays or strike to get a bigger share of the Adidas contract, I'll focus my time & attention elsewhere. - It's always confusing to me how the players getting paid detracts from someone's ability to enjoy the watching them play. Unionization would likely also lead to a collective bargaining agreement which might limit how much schools can directly pay the players, might limit NIL without actual work, and might restrict the currently unrestricted free transfers.
-
The hits just keep coming. The NCAA is still looking for Congress to save them from themselves. Next step is unionization and collective bargaining agreements. https://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/40541501/court-ruling-seeks-test-decide-athletes-employees
-
In the past, I would've agreed with this but the transfer portal and NIL really changes that. A team can be completely rebuilt in a short amount of time. Miller and Woodson have shown that IU still has enough clout to land good HS talent. IU has had talent, they've just had bad coaches.
-
Similar to how they blew out Army, Louisville, and Morehead State by 30 points last year? They should be 30 point blowouts but this is still a Mike Woodson coached team.

It's Dukie V.
