(2021) SG Tamar Bates to INDIANA

Sounds like he could play a stretch 4 type position offensively but not defensively. EVALUATED 01/16/2020 Jerry MeyerDIRECTOR OF BASKETBALL SCOUTING PROJECTION Second Round COMPARISON Moses BrownPORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS Has NBA center size. Game is skill based and not athletically based. Has good footwork and touch in post. Can stretch defense to three-point line. Comfortable with the ball as a passer. Has good hands and rebounds his area. Not a big shot blocker. Positional defender inside. Needs to improve quickness to defend on perimeter.

TJD will almost certainly go pro. if he doesn't progress enough to do that for whatever reason, I think he would transfer. So there is Gunn's scholarship available without a transfer if they fill the last spot with a multi-year player.

It's called "managing expectations." For example, while I think he should average 50 ppg I will expect only 25 ppg.

Their advantage is that they already have a year of playing in college and they could have a big sophomore jump in improvement. Plus, this just makes the backcourt that much more talented during practice which should help everyone improve.

That seems like a pretty convoluted way to get the next Duke coach. I'm not buying it.
  6. Right, but that is still far from "encouraged to leave" which is what I was responding to in the first place. To me encouraging him to leave means forcing him out. Honestly telling him what he can expect next season isn't encouraging him to leave. Encouraging him to leave says they didn't want him here at all. I just don't believe that they'd be unhappy if he had decided to stay in a reduced role. He's not taking a scholarship away from another player so they'd have basically had an ex-starter as a walk-on. They'd say no to that? He was probably told he'd play like 10mpg or less (which is what he was playing at the end of the '19-'20 season) and didn't like that. If that was the case and he decided that wasn't enough so he left, that's on him and not the coaching staff. If he was "encouraged to leave" they told him he would not play at all. I just doubt that happened.
  7. Where are you getting that from? From Fife's interview it sounded like they wanted him to stay. He also wouldn't have counted against scholarship count so as far as the roster is concerned he'd have been like a walk-on desire having a scholarship. So forcing him out wouldn't make much sense.

You are correct, he takes 1 of their 13 allowed.

Mike Woodson and His Coaching Staff

If the Woodson experiment fails it won't be because they weren't willing to spend money to hire people to help him succeed.
  10. Basketball is not the only sport getting new assistant coaches, the swim team got a new assistant diving coach, as well. Looks like a great pick up. Eric Best spent 20 years as the head coach at MSU and was B1G diving coach of the year in 2006. https://iuhoosiers.com/news/2021/4/15/mens-swimming-and-diving-swimming-and-diving-announces-addition-of-eric-best.aspx

    Player decisions

I thought going in to last season that while Phinisee's shooting percentage wasn't great, he did do well when he was able to setup and then catch the ball ready to shoot. This didn't happen very often his first 2 seasons but he was able to do that last season early on. That stopped happening, probably around the time conference season started. Part of it was just the offense falling apart as the season went on but it also seemed like he wasn't trying to find those kind of shots anymore. I hope in Woodson's offense he'll be able to do that because he's a much better spot up shooter than an off the dribble shooter.

    Next Year’s Roster

Look at it this way: if a player can hit 95% of his 3s in practice, he should be capable of hitting a high percentage of them in a game. Not 95%, obviously, but 40%+ seems reasonable. If he was only hitting 40% of his attempts while wide open, unrushed, and without any pressure during practice it would be very unreasonable to expect 40% in a game. So it shows that he can shoot, he just needs to do that during games. His freshman year shooting percentage was pretty good so that shows he can hit during games. It went down his sophomore season but I think he had to create a lot of his own shots.

Well, yeah, you'll have that when you return most of a team that went 12-15.

    NCAA MBB Transfer Portal

Considering the number of seniors with an extra year of eligibility transferring, I wouldn't be surprised if not every transfer finds a spot at a D1 school. I expect there will be lots of transfers in years to come but maybe not as many as this year which is kind of an anomaly with the extra year of eligibility given. The rule has now passed (or is even closer to doing so) and there is a cutoff. This year it is July 1 and and going forward it will be May 1. https://www.si.com/college/2021/04/14/ncaa-transfers-rule-change-football-basketball From the article: "The new rule would allow all athletes to move freely at least once, though it includes some stipulations. Athletes must submit to their school a notification of transfer by certain dates to be immediately eligible at their next location. Fall- and winter-sport athletes would have to notify their schools by May 1, and spring sport athletes would have until July 1. However, because of the timing of the Council’s decision, the fall and winter sports’ notification date will be pushed this summer to July 1—a quasi-deadline day in the college sports world similar to those in professional leagues."

Mike Woodson and His Coaching Staff

I look at it as a move into administration. A different job completely so not really a promotion or demotion. He won't be coaching anymore but will still be helping the program. How he views it would depend on what he wants going forward with his career. If he really wants to coach then I guess it could be viewed as a demotion. If he wants to get into management then I think it could be viewed as a promotion. He took the job instead of moving on so I he's either happy with it or at least satisfied so I don't think he views it as a demotion.

    Proposed Men's Bball Rule Changes

Someone shared this on HSN so I thought I'd share it here. The Big East experimented with 6 fouls in the early 90s during league play. It resulted in a ton of FTs. A game that is already getting ugly would get uglier. I would also point out that currently the NCAA allows players the same number minutes per foul as the NBA at 8 minutes per foul. 40/5 = 8 48/6 = 8 Adding a 6th foul would change that to 1 foul allowed every 6 minutes 40 seconds before fouling out. So instead of making the game more like the NBA, which the NCAA seems to be trying to do, in this aspect they'd be going away from that and making it more like HS ball. Just the fact that they're trying to also limit it to 4 fouls per half shows that they realize it probably isn't a great idea to go to 6 fouls.

    Proposed Men's Bball Rule Changes

Yes, it's overly complicated and seemingly for no reason. The players wouldn't get 6 fouls, they'd get anywhere from 4 to 6 fouls. If they want to increase the limit from 5 to 6 then just do it, not this jumbled mess of a rule. It seems like they're trying to have it both ways: increase the limit while also making sure coaches still have to have some concerns about foul trouble. The resetting of team fouls at the 10 minute mark of each half also seems more complicated than it should be. If they want that, just go to quarters instead of halves. I can foresee scenarios where there are extended reviews in the middle of a half to see exactly when a foul was called. Does it result in 2 FT or was it a second later and the fouls had reset so no FT? Dumb.
  19. No, they don't allow graduate players. That's why guys like Seth Towns transfer out. They graduate with eligibility left then have to find somewhere else to play.

Maybe his shot was always jacked but maybe not. In HS he injured his shooting wrist 2 years in a row. It's possible that's when it became so bad. That's just me speculating and giving him and his dad the benefit of the doubt. I could be wrong.

    Player decisions

I imagine Woodson has started working a bit with them on what he wants to do offensively and defensively, as well. Or at least has pointed them to clips of teams doing it. So the players probably have a better feel now than then of how well they'd fit into such a system. Plus, Woodson has had a chance to evaluate the players so he may have told Brunk how much PT to expect. Maybe Brunk wanted more. So things have definitely changed since TJD said that and between all of those things Brunk thought it was best to leave. TBH, it doesn't break my heart that he's leaving. I'm only kind of disappointed since he wouldn't have counted as a scholarship so looking at it from that perspective he'd be a great player to have as a walk-on. (Before anyone tells me, yes, I know he wouldn't have had to pay for his schooling so not technically a walk-on.)
  22. So you think in the 10-15 years he'll be the coach (hopefully he's that successful) before retiring, Woodson will win only 1 NC?

His injury certainly set him back. Another problem was he had Miller as his coach after that. Which one was the largest contributing factor will be seen after he plays for a different coach, be that Woodson or someone else. Actually, this pertains to almost all of the player's on last season's team. Are they just not that good or was it mainly just the coaching? If a bunch of them make big jumps that would point to coaching. If they remain pretty much the same then it would be talent and/or injuries.

I'm not exactly blown away by the list of schools that have contacted him so they might be right. Indiana, Clemson, Grand Canyon, Boston College, Wichita State, Elon, Georgia State, Texas A&M, and UNCW Compare that with his recruitment list out of HS: North Carolina, NC State, Michigan, Xavier and UConn His stock has dropped a ton after some time in D1.

I think we're bringing him and Keion Brooks in along with Brad Stevens as the 3rd assistant as a package deal.
