Those mid majors that have gotten in, have performed pretty well. But recently we are seeing less get in. I think the big problem and the biggest difference is conference realignment. Bigger conferences makes it more watered down. More teams with more losses. ACC has 15 teams, Big Ten and SEC have 14. Honestly I wish the Big Ten was back to 11. Are we talking about just like eye test being better or performance in the NCAA tourney better? Because those teams will get compared to those at large mid majors seeded in the same area. Back in the early 2000’s from 2000-2005 there were 3 teams with losing conference records and 34 mid majors selected in the same seeding area. Was the tourney any worse then? Depends if you’re on the bubble or not. Last 3 years there has only been 1 mid/low major team to get an at large bid that’s a 9 seed or lower. Belmont was an 11 last season. St Bonnies was an 11 in 2018. VCU was a 10 in 2017. The last two seasons have been dominated by teams who can’t go .500 in conference or win 20 games. Oddly enough, North Carolina got in a pretty good spot if they want to make a run. They play Virginia Tech. They win that they play Syracuse. They win that they play Louisville.
