General Coach Candidate News
HoosierDYT replied to JaybobHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I agree with all your points... I just think if I was a coach, the #1 thing to me would be longevity, and if Drew doesn't get in trouble at Baylor, he will literally be able to retire there. I don't think money matters as much as we think it does because of diminishing margins of return. But how does Drew want his legacy to end? As a solid coach who resurrected one of the worst D-1 programs all time, with probably a few Elite 8's / Final 4's (maybe even a national championship)? Or, as THE guy, from Indiana, who resurrected one of the most dominant basketball programs of all time? That would make him a hall of famer and a lifelong celebrity in Indiana. I'm not saying any of that is likely, however, these coaches have egos, and with the current state of our program, playing into the legacy of coaches might be our best bet. That's what I'd do if I was Dolson, and I think its transferable to all of the big names we are after. Stevens? Heck, unless he wins 3+ championships with the Celtics (which, in the NBA, is virtually impossible without a top-5 player), his legacy will not even be in the same discussion than if he won ONE championship at Indiana. -

Archie definitely looks exhausted on the sidelines...maybe the mutual parting of ways this offseason is more plausible than I thought Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners -

Probably the best slate of games we've had in awhile today. Was gonna try and get lots of stuff done this evening before IU, but Baylor vs. WV is too hard to pass on

I took a break from this thread cause I honestly feel that IU is in a tough spot and there’s not a great, realistic option out there...but you guys have got me thinking. Love Scott Drew. He’s probably the closest thing we could get to a home run hire, just not sure if either or both of Dolson/Drew would agree. I never considered it, but kudos to whoever suggested Mark Jackson. IMO he deserves more credit for the creation of the Splash Brothers/Warriors success. Not sure if we’d do it, or if he’d be interested (broadcasting is a great gig); but man, that’d get me excited. I agree that Bennet/Wright/Oats/Donovan/Few are pipe dreams. 2% chance for Stevens. I don’t hate the idea of Hurley....musselman could be interesting but I don’t love it this year. I like Scheyer but doubt he’d go for it. Thoughts on Travis Steele? Ed Cooley? Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners -
(2021) C Logan Duncomb to IU, to Winthrop
HoosierDYT replied to ccgeneral's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Yep. I wish he’d score more too, but they’re a methodical program that plays great team basketball. It’s quite literally the opposite of most schools today. In their offense, the open guy gets the shot and there’s not a ton of one on one basketball. Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners mobile app -

I think it was certainly a possibility. At the time, Archie was a very hot coaching candidate, possibly the most coveted, realistic option for many of the powerful big 5 teams. I know he turned down many jobs before taking IU. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app -

Game Thread: Minn at IU, Weds 9:00 on BTN
HoosierDYT replied to Stuhoo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I don't trust our team yet, but I totally agree. After the game Andy Katz was saying we are definitely a team that could win two games in the tournament, and I think our record suggests that we can play with almost anyone. -

I completely agree. And I really believe we are a top 5 "clean" team/brand in the country. IDK who else would even be in consideration? But this reason - imo - is the #1 reason for why our coaching position is not as appealing as it should be. I still think we're a top 3 job in the Big 10, probably #1, but whether it's Archie or a new coach, he won't be playing with a full deck of cards. -

Oh good point. Also seems like we reverse the ball faster than in previous years. The one thing I constantly wish we'd do (since Romeo's year) is add just one or two back-cuts a game. I feel like I've only seen a handful during Archie's tenure but our defenders nearly steal the ball on every handoff. -

I know our numbers haven't really shown it, but doesn't it seem like over the course of the year, our offensive flow has been much, much better than last year? Obviously our offense has many shortcomings, but it seems like our movement is way more solid this year. -
BBall Non-Coaching Program Improvements
HoosierDYT replied to Bowhunter's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Love this topic. Obviously winning cures all, but some changes could improve national recruiting which could lead to more winning. I'll probably reiterate what many have said, but this is my list: - Keep AH. It's awesome IMO. OSU's gym is so so so boring and quiet 75% of the time, plus it has no history. Do something with the rafters, however. Unless we're a top 25 team or playing a top 5 team, those seats are not worth it to most fans. - Hip Hop music instead of the band for warmups. Might be a cold take, and although I enjoy the band, it seems like our student section is not as hype to start the games as other schools potentially. - Alternate uniforms. Doesn't have to be crazy. I am a big fan of the script logo. A blackout jersey could be cool / unique too. - Modernize the candy stripes. If we were the #1 team in the country, candy stripes would be cool. However, I feel they need slight modernizations such as being cheaper and having the jogger-like bottoms near the ankle. - We have to play more in the "grey area" in recruiting. Although we don't have to take on a Kentucky like approach, our compliance office should work with our coaches and boosters, not against them. Think UPS made a great point here with Mason Miller's recruitment vs. Creighton. - Beer at games. I think it's gonna be a thing soon / was changed last year for football? Still would help I believe. - Students behind baskets 100%. Not the band. Not boosters. Students. - Better halftime / game break action. Martha the Mop lady is cool. The graphic stating "I'm ___ (Oladipo, Zeller, etc.) and I'm a Hoosier" is cool. But geez, some of the stuff is so boring, such as the gift cards being sent down from the rafters or the tires racing on the big screen. Instead, possibly, have fans cheer and cheerleaders hand out pizza and coke or something. Anything to improve the "customer" experience. Maybe a fan free throw contest or something every couple of home games? There's a ton they could do. - I love love love the idea of switching to Nike / Jordan, not UA though. I firmly believe some recruits don't want to go to an Adidas basketball school. Plus I like the gear of Nike/Jordan more. This won't happen, but I think it'd help our "sex appeal." - This won't happen either, but I love how Atlanta's new football stadium (Mercedez Dome) pledges cheap prices. I think post-covid this would be a great incentive to get people into the arena. $1 hot dogs? $1 fountain drinks? $2 soft pretzels? That's awesome, and families could feed their kids for cheap at games. -

Two things for me: 1) Until I see the current administration can someone earlier than expected I’ll be surprised to see it happen. 2) I don’t see any candidates that I think justify spending the money to fire Archie that we can hire and have coach the team going into next year. Sorta. Just not sure who the replacement realistically would be... I can’t picture Bennet / Stevens / Donovan being intrigued to come here. Heck, even Oats could be a tough sell. Alabama let’s him recruit more “loosely” and the Big 10 is more competitive. It’s a tough job. Fife? Eh could be a hit or miss. I kinda like the idea of Matta if he’s healthy. Regardless, this conversation is unfortunately premature as he won’t be canned this year unless we basically lose out. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app
