If we’re going off kenpom he’s shown the ability to coach championship level defense his first year at WVU. Top 15 defense is very impressive to me. He had two top 40 offenses at Drake his last 3 years. The shot profile looks really nice with a high percentage of 3s. Obviously you can’t pick and choose but the fact he’s shown that ability on both offense and defense makes me optimistic. If West Virginia hadn’t lost Tucker Devries and they were ranked in the 20s this year would that change anyone’s opinion? It’s really hard to win after losing your best player lol

I managed to get excited for woody after an offseason. I sure as hell will get excited for an actual college basketball coach lol

Also comparing Devries to Woodson this year doesn’t really make sense to me since his best player was out. They were ranked before Tucker went out. Take woodys best player away from him and we may not win a game

Idk did you think oats could do it before he got there? Maybe you did i honestly don’t know but you have to find the next oats because the days of hiring a guy like oats away from a nonbasketball school look like they’re done

Compare this to the pope and kelsey hires from last year and it feels similar. Devries probably has had more success than Kelsey and maybe less than Pope by a smidge. It's hard to pull successful coaches away from their teams. That is just the nature of college basketball. I would love to have gotten Lloyd or Drew or someone of that nature but it just isn't the name of the game anymore. I would wager to guess the people that thought we had no shot at Stevens will be lauding this as a great hire

I want a grinder as our next coach. Someone i know that is going to be putting in hours on the recruiting trail, watching film and always trying to make us better. Someone that is flexible with their thoughts on the game. That was I think my biggest frustration with woody. I love basketball so my coach not putting in the effort was infuriating. Last year even though i had some reservations about dusty I would’ve been very happy with him since there are stories of him watching Euroleague basketball at 3 am looking for plays. He would’ve given his all. Archie wasn’t flexible and stuck to his stupid pack line and no 3s offense. Woody didn’t care. Crean was a weirdo but i think put in the hours

I think I’ve come around on McCollum. Just listen to him talk. He really knows the game. Kind of reminds of painter who i think is a great coach. The lack of 3s appear to be an outlier this year. I’d take a shot on the upside and the fact our NIL can build any team he’d want. He’s seems smart enough to actually utilize that unlike Woodson. Don’t know what his personality is like but hopefully he’s not a hermit like Archie

I fully understand and even with the northwestern buff, i am not impressed w his results at all. I mean the argument against him is his resume sucks and it’s a big leap of faith expecting him to be totally different than the rest of his career.

I’m not even the biggest McCollum fan. Right now he has zero committed recruits. I know people bring up he’s winning with D2 players but those D2 players have been in his system for a long time. We’ve yet to see him have to recruit and replace players at this level. Despite that id still take him over Collin or brownell. Those two have shown they’re mediocre at this level

The only one of those likely to leave are Will wade and beard and sure I’d take them over McCollum but there’s obviously other factors involved. Saying you’d rather have Collins who has 37% conference win percentage over McCollum seems silly but that’s just one guys opinion

That sounds great in theory but how many coaches are out there that fit that criteria and are willing to leave. Just because Archie didn’t work out doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take another swing at an up and comer

I can't wait until we have a coach just so the chris beard arguments that happen every other day can stop. Feel like at this point people feel very strongly one way or the other about him and there's no changing their mind
