The measure he is using is basically what the NCAA is using with WAB (wins above bubble). They are using the torvik ranking to calculate that. My opinion is that WAB or Evan Miya's win value ratings are the single most important metrics. When IU lost to Maryland by 1 last Sunday, I certainly didn't take any solance in it being just a one point loss. You either win or you lose. What's interesting is how consistent WAB is with Evan Miya (I would bet it's pretty consistent with the WAR ratings I ran the last few years). Torvik has IU 51st in WAB; Miya has IU 50th in win value - loss value. And WAB/win value-loss value actually would promote mid major conference teams running up elite win totals into the tournament. Indiana State would most certainly have been in last year. This year the WAB/win value-loss value measures would put Drake in (on the 9/10 line) and would have North Texas (16-4 overall) as a team squarely on the bubble. -

I mean it’s an obvious throwing shade at woody quote…but at the same time how many days do you need to prepare to beat a 16 seed? -

Crazy Kenpom Stat - Title Winners
RaceToTheTop replied to HoosierX's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I believe that it's almost a lock every year that a team that wins the national title enters the tournament ranked in the top 20 in BOTH offensive and defensive efficiency. If that holds true, this year the only contenders right now would be Houston, Auburn, Duke, Florida, Iowa State, and Michigan State. -

I don't know what he shot as a high school senior, but his three point shooting percentage went down each of his first three years of high school -- from 43, to 38, to 35% from three. I know he averaged 24 ppg as a junior (Riley really pushed tempo and averaged like 75 as a team). -

I remember Hunter committing the next day but knew that he was coming in a year after Henry. Forgot about Anderson. I do recall that it LOOKED like there was going to be a log jam at small forward and that although IU had looked at Henry, wasn't sure they had actually offered. Man, Damezi Anderson. Funny thing is scouts LOVED him. I recall asking someone that had seen him play that season about him and they liked him but they said he was surrounded by immense amount of talent (they won their first 26 games before losing to Carmel at Semi-State, I believe). Blake Wesley (Notre Dame and now the Spurs) was a freshman on that team and there were at least two other seniors alongside Anderson that played D1. -

Not exactly a glowing endorsement.....'kid playing in the second best basketball conference in our state'. If it's all about just getting kids playing in good basketball conferences in Indiana, then IU was correct in prioritizing C.J. Gunn over him. Braden Smith was ranked 216th in his class. Kudos to Painter for seeing something in him that others didn't, but it's not like the kid had any other high major offers. -

Reminds me of Aaron Henry. While everyone wondered if he was good enough to play at IU and IU waited too long to offer, he jumped at an offer to play for Michigan State. Three years later he was a three year starter and put up 15.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.6 assists as a junior. -

The only offers Braden Smith has listed on 247 are Toledo, Montana, Appalachian State, and Purdue. Lots of people missed on him. -

Worth noting that Matt Painter spent ten years as an assistant, a year as a head coach, and another where he served as a head-coach-in-waiting under Keady. Sheyer spent nine years as an assistant at Duke before getting the head job. The difference is that by the time they got there head jobs, they were no longer just ex-players. Sure, it is possible for someone to become a good head college coach immediately....just not very likely. -

I don't have an opinion on Fife one way or the other, but it's not speculation from Chris because he 'doesn't like the guy'. Michigan State boards will tell you the same thing. -

Not unless they proved they were a hell of a coach first. We don't need guys learning on the job just because they played at IU. -

I would say Chris is 100% accurate on Izzo not caring enough to want Fife back. We all realllllyyyyy dislike Woodson but Fife did some behind the scenes stuff at IU prior to even IU playing their first game with him as an assistant coach that honestly could have led to his dismissal. Probably would have if he hadn't been an IU grad. -
Maryland Last Possession - IU Defense
RaceToTheTop replied to Stuhoo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
It is worth noting if you watch the shot attempt that Leal actually ends up being in pretty good rebounding position when the shot goes through the net. When Gillespie got into the lane (and traveled damn it) IU had four players collapsing on him. The kick out went to Rodney Rice but IU had time to get back on him -- notice that when the shot goes up, Gillespie is twenty-four feet out, so he had time to go from the middle of the lane to that spot. Galloway's positioning is okay -- he's got time to close in on Gillespie if the pass goes his way. Rice had collapsed in on the drive (not sure why, he's not going to come from an off position and block him). Maryland had Reese out, I assume to draw Ballo away from the rim. Reneau isn't where he should be but honestly there isn't a good spot for him to be in -- either leave Queen open underneath or Rice even more open. The two biggest issues.....why is Ballo so far out defending Reese? and Rice rotating in caused a jam between he and Ballo. -

RaceToTheTop replied to Stuhoo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Looking at that.....Rice shouldn't have even shot that as the better play was the easy feed to Queen for a layup uncontested. If you watch the full play, Rice didn't have any option but to go over the screen because Ballo didn't switch and got in Rice's way. FWIW, Gillespie still got away with a travel. -

My dad coached high school basketball (actually coached three different sports -- football, basketball, and golf -- think he probably put in about 80 or so seasons when they are all added together). When he because a head varsity basketball coach, he had a father of a kid he cut who wrote a 'letter to the editor' which was (stupidly) published in the local paper. Guy -- who was the town drunk -- said it was 'guys like (my father) who caused kids to end up in jail'. Idiots are everywhere and are going to write ****. -

I would be surprised if that were Kopp. In previous tweets/talks where he has talked about college basketball, he's been pretty level headed. And he's more humorous than SDB (who doesn't seem to understand humor). Kopp took Dave Portnoy out with a single tweet. SDB doesn't understand very simple things.
