Bob Knight TV show - post '81 championship
pumpfake replied to pumpfake's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I think there were times he'd have rather handled chemicals than dealt with a PO'd BK. The man was a trooper! -
I found two final chunks of video from my old tape collection and finally got this one up on YT. It's the first of two Bob Knight show telecasts after the 1981 championship game. Knight isn't on it, but it has Chuck interviewing assistant coaches and senior players. It's the full broadcast with commercials (remember the Amax coal commercials?). Overall it's not really that interesting, but has nostalgic value. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mlng7h0Rk0M (I believe I have one more BK show from right after the '87 championship. It got cut off at the end before they show video of the visit to the White House. Maybe I'll post it sometime this year, lol)

You know, that's almost incredible. I know this season has felt disappointing, but given the circumstances it's been somewhat successful. IMO, the progress the team defense has made in league play has been great.
-
Dang. That seems like ten years ago.
-
When's the last time we had a "convincing" win in a league game? I don't know, but it feels good and I'm not going to spoil it by posting anything negative. Great defensive effort, great win.

It seems that between missed shots under the bucket and FT's we're giving away at least 10 points a game - can't do that when you struggle to score.

Commendable job by the IUAD tonight
pumpfake replied to Magnanimous's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I don't really have a problem with what 'we' did and I wouldn't if we didn't. I guess it's usually best to err on the side of good decorum. That said, maybe MSU could do something about the location for the IU radio broadcasts - for decades you can hear all sorts of comments and insults from the fans right behind Fischer. Back in the 80's you'd hear all sorts of verbal abuse over the broadcast, mostly directed at Knight. -
LOL, true. In the first half of the OSU game the other night we had a post or two griping because Archie didn't put Priller in. YIKES.
-
Something that has kind of gone unnoticed because of the poor shooting and lacks of wins, but we are finally once again a team that is capable of playing half court offense. Previously we were a running team and too easily taken out of rythym by an opponent that would slow us down. IMO, it's a lot easier to slow the game down than speed it up and in the B10 if you can't adapt you're dead in the water. We value the ball so much better, look inside better, and move the ball better in general.
-
Apparently we aren't supposed to mention poor officiating, but if my memory serves correct it was the same guy that ignored the shoulder into Morgan (ref was 5 feet away looking directly at it), the missed out of bounds in the second half that hit the MSU player's foot last and (I believe) the steal under the basket where the MSU guy was 8 inches out of bounds. Not blaming the loss on the refs, but that guy (the dude with short gray hair) appears to be either incompetent, blind, or betting the spread.

As painful as some of our games have been, I'm probably more optimistic than I've been in a long time. It's just the damn waiting.
-
Oh, jeez. Now he's taking his whining to the press conferences? Poor guy with his lowly 5-star freshman.
-
At least this time it's a good bet - first off we probably can't get any worse. As long as Morgan stays, we won't be losing much from the roster, and Archie has clearly begun to correct the non-skill weaknesses of the past (defense and turnovers).
-
Clearly not in gym practicing FT's (otherwise great effort).
-
Sounded like a smattering of boos after Newkirk jacked up the second not-even-close-three on the same possession.
-
A thought just dawned on me: this team could actually look much worse. With our previous coach on the bench, we'd still be a crummy shooting team but our defense would be worse and we'd already be in double digits in turnovers (only 5 tonight in the 1st half). We stink, but at least it's primarily confined to scoring points.
-
I can understand that. If you can find a way to synchronize the radio broadcast to the game (it is possible) you can watch/listen and keep your sanity. Listening to the game I have to say that Don Fischer really pronounces the name 'Langford' really well - I hope he gets to say it in every game next year.

You are correct sir, as Ed McMahon used to say. If more university presidents would speak out, maybe something could happen. But, as you say, the bottom line is the dollar and the people that could throw the most influence are probably at the same schools that are among the biggest offenders.

Here's an open letter to Condoleeza Rice from Mitch Daniels regarding the NCAA commission formed to look into basketball recruiting "concerns": https://www.indystar.com/story/opinion/2018/02/02/daniels-good-luck-fixing-cesspool-ncaa-condoleezza-rice/302446002/ IMO, it's a well written, spot-on piece about the problems in the sport and the failure to do anything about it. He addresses the NBA's involvement in the 1 and done rule as well. I think it's really noteworthy that a former presidential cabinet member, governor, and sitting university president would write this - and even calls out UNC and their phony classes. Definitely a worthwhile read and relevant to the subject of this thread.

(2018) PG Robert Phinisee to Cincinnati
pumpfake replied to Hovadipo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
And I'll bet he still hit his FT's too. Overall a very impressive interview. Very comfortable and well spoken. I also like that he described himself as a pass first PG (one that can obviously score) - just what an elite scorer might want to team up with (hint, hint). -
(2018) SG Romeo Langford - INDIANA HOOSIERS
pumpfake replied to ccgeneral's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Yep. We'll know that recruiting is really rolling when the state's best regularly commit, and early, to play in Bloomington. -
Interesting article (Indy Star) that documents the current state of the roster: What IU basketball is missing and how it got here With a lot of discussion about the current talent level, the article documents the past several recruiting classes. Looking at what's currently left from the past four classes it's easy to see why we're mired in (sub) mediocrity.

(2018) SG Romeo Langford - INDIANA HOOSIERS
pumpfake replied to ccgeneral's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Playing in front of fans dressed in IU garb and RL sets a personal scoring record. The choice is clear young Mr. Langford - candystripes are your destiny.... -
There must be some reason we were predicted to finish near the bottom of the standings. Just because OSU defied the experts, doesn't mean our talent level was under valued. We were pretty bad last year and lost 3 of our best players - our only hope for improvement was from individual development.
-
Obviously too early to judge, but Dayton fans complaining about recruiting? Really? In only a few short months he has already signed a class better than any he had there. Now he's in on real difference makers - players that would have never considered Dayton. The proof will come when we find out if he can successfully recruit elite players, but that story is yet to be written.
