Latest Update: Final score 72-15 Probably safe to say Centerville will advance in tournament play. After 1 quarter tonight against New Carlisle Tecumseh Centerville led 31-4 in a district semifinal game. This is just humiliating. Halftime Centerville led 51-8. After 3Q it was 64-10. Tecumseh isn't chopped liver. Per MaxPreps its season record is 14-8. Based on the score I would have expected a winless season. I'll have Cupps stats in the morning for what they'll be worth as I can't imagine any of the starters played very many minutes.

Johnson's magic on the mound ran out in the 6th and FL St. scored 3 runs and lead 3-1 with the Hoosiers batting in the 7th. Brianna Copeland relieved Johnson in the 6th. In the 7th, we went down in order and 3-1 was the final score. We play Hofstra at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning and then head back home to Bloomington. -

Kaleb's high school career came to an end last night when Dougherty County made a basket with .2 sec. remaining to win 66-65 in a 4A Sweet Sixteen game. Kaleb fouled out with 2:21 remaining and the score tied 61-61. Fayette missed 2 FT with seconds remaining leading 65-64. Dougherty raced down court and kid hit a 10' pull up jump shot for the win. I had Kaleb with 18p 6r 1a 3s 4b 6t. 2 of his TOs were traveling calls. 3 of them were bad passes, 2 of which came in the 4th Q when he was trying to inbound the ball under the Dougherty basket. Never could find a consistent source for his game stats so it's another case of finding a little bit here and a little bit there. 29 games: 23.5 ppg 28 games: 9.5 rpg 15 games: 3.0 assists 10 games: 2.3 steals 12 games: 3.1 blocks 10 games: 2.7 TOs -

Koch's season ended last night with a double OT 36-33 loss to Peoria Manual. Koch 9p in the loss. Peoria Notre Dame finishes its season 22-7. It's been extremely difficult to try to keep track of game stats for Koch. PND doesn't report stats to MaxPreps and the Peoria Journal is worthless. So despite the fact he's played 29 games all I have is the following: 16 games: 16.7 ppg 14 games: 5.23 rpg 13 games: 2.0 assists 13 games: 2.2 steals 13 games: .8 blocks 12 games: 1.7 TOs -

Post-game story -- Freshman forward Darryn Peterson had 31 points to lead the CVCA Royals to a 71-47 win over East Tech in OHSAA sectional final play. The Royals raced out to an 18-8 lead thanks to the efforts of Peterson, who had 13 points in the quarter. East Tech responded, cutting the lead to six early in the second quarter, thanks to buckets from Devante Graham and Mohamed Sakhir. But CVCA responded with a game-breaking 21-4 run. Peterson added 11 more points in the quarter for a total of 24. Thanks to this run, the Royals led 39-16 going into the halftime break. The Royals would push their lead to as much as 28 points, thanks to buckets from the outside and the inside. On defense, they forced East Tech to miss several shots, and grabbed multiple boards. These cleanups would turn into baskets for the Royals, to the delight of the student section. In the fourth quarter, the Royals had a little fun as well. On an inbound pass, Will Potts found Darryn Peterson for a rim-rattling alley-oop to send the crowd into a frenzy. From there CVCA rolled to victory, advancing to the districts for the second consecutive season. In addition to Peterson’s 31, senior wing Seth Bagwell had 22, and Brennen Darr had 11. CVCA (15-7) advances to play against Padua next Wednesday at the Canton Civic Center. East Tech’s season ends at 11-9, but not without a valiant effort. The Scarabs did not play last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and head coach Terence Owen came on board two weeks before the season began. They were led by Malik Bennett’s 14 points, followed by seniors Devante Graham and Mohamed Sakhir, each with 13.

Lilly's regular season ended last night with a 52-31 win over Rochester Century. She finished with 22p 10r 0a 2s 0t For 26 games she averaged 21.9p 11.6r 2.5a 2.0s 1.9b 2.3t 52% FG 31% on 3s 77% FT ROCHESTER POST BULLETIN -- If you can’t score, you can’t win. The Rochester John Marshall girls basketball team has done nothing but win the last 10 games, in good part because it’s smothered everyone in its path defensively. JM was up to that again Friday night in its own gymnasium, using hounding person-to-person defense to punish Century and come up with a resounding 52-31 Big Nine Conference win, ending its regular season. In JM’s last nine games, it’s held its opponents to 34 points per game, a rare and tiny number. “JM has just taken their man-to-man defense to another level in their last nine games,” Century coach Chadd Clarey said. “You can see they’ve all bought into it, they all do it well, and then they box out and rebound well.” The Rockets now head into the postseason having finished 18-4 in the Big Nine, 19-7 overall, and likely to be awarded the No. 1 seed in the Section 1AAAA tournament. Senior-laden JM also heads in knowing exactly what it has to do to continue its winning ways. It’s simple — don’t let the other team score. At least not much. “I take a lot of pride in defense, because defense wins games,” said JM senior guard Katie Hurt, the top defender on a team that is full of quality ones. “I’ve been preaching that to my team. We all understand now that defense wins games. We all have to focus on it, and from there our offense will come.” Hurt’s defensive assignment on Friday was to guard Century sharp-shooting guard Taylor Clarey. The sophomore entered the game averaging 15 points, on a hot streak, and also as Century’s all-time leader in 3-pointers made, girl or boy. With Hurt guarding her, there were virtually no 3-pointers available. A 5-foot-11 bundle of quickness, strength and determination, Hurt stayed strapped to Clarey all game. When the evening was done, Clarey hadn’t connected on a single 3-pointer and totaled just two points. Always an excellent defensive player, JM coach Phil Schroeder says Hurt is at an even higher level now and that she’s loving it. “Katie has elevated her game defensively,” said Schroeder, whose Rockets led 26-18 at halftime, then gradually put things out of reach after that. “And that says a lot because Katie was a very good defender before this. But she has brought things up a notch at the perfect time. And she takes such pride in it, which is rare, too. She wants to stop the other team’s best player and shooter every time out.” JM has one player who teams try to stop every night, but it never works. That’s the way it goes when guarding Lilly Meister, JM’s All-State and Indiana University-bound star center. Friday was no different. The 6-2 senior scored 22 points, which is just a hair below her average. Making things even tougher for Century was that it was missing its top interior defender, Ella Zmolek. The sophomore turned her ankle in the last 5 minutes of Thursday’s practice. Meister didn’t just beat Century with her scoring. She also showed herself to be a deft passer, hitting quick-cutting teammates for layups more than once. JM’s entire team showed unselfishness with its ball movement and passing. The result was the Rockets had six different players with at least five points. Meister, like Hurt a member of the JM varsity since seventh grade, is thrilled with the way her team is playing. She doesn’t want it to end. “It’s just such a blessing to be able to be playing like this now,” Meister said. “We’ve grown so much.” Century, which was led by senior forward Jordan Sutton’s 10 points, takes a 13-13 record into the Section 1AAAA tournament. That’s a huge jump from a year ago, when it finished 4-15.

After 4 compete FL State leading Macy Montgomery started on the mound. Gave up 3 runs in the 1st inning and collapsed in the 4th allowing another run and loading the bases with 1 out. Kate Rehberg took the mound. An IU error made it 5-0 and a grand slam made it 9-0. Final score 9-0. Hoosiers only mustered 2 hits. Try again tomorrow.
