Travis Branham - This week marks the start of the transfer portal season as the first wave of conference tournaments finish up. There are currently 142 names on the transfer list dating back to the start of the season. This time last year, there were already more than 240 names on the list. -

I see commentators suggesting that a win against Michigan puts us in the Big Dance but I'm a skeptic and think it would take 2 wins. -
Very sorry for your loss. Sympathies to you and your family.

FWIW, he was offered by the previous coaching administration in April '20 and committed to pUKe in October '20. -
Peterson's season ended with a 75-61 loss to Glenville in the district finals. He finished with 26 pts. and it seems to be a foregone conclusion he will be playing ball somewhere else next season. In the Beacon Journal's post-game story, it was mentioned that the CVCA head coach was a teammate of Darryn's dad at the University of Akron. And if I remember correctly (always a question) when Peterson's name first surfaced someone posted on here that his dad was supposed to join the CVCA staff but something happened and that didn't materialize. Also from the post-game story: Peterson's playing style is reserved rather than flamboyant, along the lines of Cavs rookie Evan Mobley. He didn't whine about getting bumped around. One time, a Tarblooder bodied him up outside the circle, stepped even closer than seemed possible, and buried his forehead under the freshman's right shoulder. Peterson's skill showed out in assorted ways. One time he took off after making a steal, looked backward for a split second to make sure no one would flick his crossover from behind, then accelerated to the rim like silk shot out of a cannon. I have very limited season stats for him but the following were cited in a newspaper write-up following his last game -- Peterson is averaging over 26 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals per game. He is shooting over 50 percent from the field and over 43 percent from beyond the 3-point arc.

He received an offer from Duke and in Travis Branham's story we get mentioned as having extended an offer as well. Also in the story this: The Duke offer was his first offer since October and he said that they have been the only school in recent contact. "That last offer was really it, that's the only school that's really focused right now," he said of who else has been in recent contact.

(2022) - SG C. J. Gunn to DePaul

Like with too many of our commits and targets, I could never find consistent game stats for C. J., so this is all I have and it's really bare bones. I've said it before and I'll say it again. It's pathetic how little high school sports coverage you get from the Indy Star. Most of the time it's just a bunch of game pictures and maybe the final score if you're lucky. Gannett sucks! 13 games: 25.2 ppg 6 games: 5.8 rpg 3 games: 2.0 apg 3 games 2.3 steals -
Jakai's season ended yesterday in a 75-72 state semifinal loss to Norcross. Only stat I've found for Jakai is this comment from a newspaper account: Jakai Newton and Stephon Castle combining to score 31 points for the Rams. I never found a consistent source for his game-by-game stats but this is what I have. 21 games: 14.3 ppg 20 games: 5.6 rpg 17 games 1.8 apg 17 games 1.6 steals 16 games: .6 blocks 15 games: 1.9 TOs

Rochester Post-Bulletin Make it 12 straight. More important than that huge winning streak, make it the first time that the John Marshall girls basketball team has reached the Section 1AAAA championship game since 2015. The Rockets got that done on Saturday, using another enormous outing by Indiana University-bound center Lilly Meister and more suffocating team defense to beat Lakeville South 55-44 in the Section 1AAAA semifinals at JM. It pushed the top-seeded Rockets to 21-7 overall and into Friday's 6 p.m. title game at Mayo Civic Arena. There, they will meet No. 2 seed Lakeville North, a team JM beat 57-48 in early January. This next test with North figures to be much tougher. The Panthers have won 11 of their last 13 games, including a 53-37 rout of Farmington in Saturday's section semifinals. Then again, JM has Meister. With the ultra-talented 6-foot-2 senior on its side, the Rockets always like their chances. Meister was an "ultra" player once again Saturday. She absolutely owned the second half, when she scored 23 of her game-high 31 points. She also used those 18 minutes to grab the majority of a rebound total that hovered around 20. And finally, she was there when JM needed her most, just as Lakeville South was hinting at a comeback win after having trailed 21-14 at halftime. The Cougars had their deficit trimmed all the way to 33-29 when Meister basically said, "that's enough." Taking things into her own hands, she followed with a basket and a converted foul shot after being whacked on the play. She also had 10 of her team's final 19 points, all while seeming to grab every rebound. Yes, she wanted this badly. So, she said, did everyone on this team, especially its irreplaceable eight seniors. That includes teammate Katie Hurt, who like Meister has been on the JM varsity since seventh grade. "This was going to be our last home game, regardless," said Meister, who has now scored 30 and 31 points in her last two games. "So, I thought, I'm going to make the most of it. I was just going to play hard. Now that we're in the finals, it just feels amazing." Meister was not nearly the only Rocket who came out determined. It's what JM has done all season and particularly on the defensive end where it's performed a couple of notches above everybody it's faced during this winning streak. JM entered the game having allowed fewer than 40 points for four straight games. It just missed that mark against Lakeville South, a team that had been averaging 52 points in the always tough South Suburban Conference. "Without a doubt, it was team defense that won it for us," JM coach Phil Schroeder said. "Ours was phenomenal for the entire game. The kids did a great job of understanding what we wanted to do. (Finley) Ohnstad and (Ally) Schultz are great 3-point shooters for South, and they just continue to shoot no matter how it's going. So defensively, you can't ever let up against them." JM never did take a defensive break and the post-game numbers reflected as much. Schultz, who's averaging 15 points per game, finished with 10. Ohnstad, averaging 12, had nine. If you can't score, you can't win. JM did a heck of a job — once again — of not letting its opponent score much. And while it was doing that, Meister made sure the Rockets were taken care of on the other end. It's what she does and it's what they do. Make it 12 wins and counting for the Rockets. Get one more and they're headed to the state tournament.
