Transfer Portal w/IU Interest

As ridiculous as the some of the NCAA eligibility stuff is, that whole playing early maintains eligibility but playing late uses it may be in it’s own tier of nuts. -

Not with you on that one. For the 1st and only night of my life I will Boiler Up. Wouldn’t root for Sampson against the Manson Family. -

Actually, the exact opposite. Baker-Mazara is my go-to example of the 1 change I’d make if I was NCAA President for a day. That guy’s gonna play the entire SEC conference season next year at 26. That’s insane. I’d do away with medical redshirts, hardship waivers, the whole thing, and give every athlete in every sport unlimited years, no questions asked, until their 25th birthday. On that day as they’re blowing out the candles on their cake their eligibility is up, no appeals or exceptions. If some kid reclasses up and starts school his 17-18 yo year, fine he’s got 7 years. Normal kids would have 6. And, hey, if some coach wants to use a guy 2/3 of a season because he turns 25 in February, I’’m down with that, too. His Senior night can be game 20, then he’s done. I can swallow a 24yo playing against a freshman, but that’s where I vociferously draw the line. -

The announcers just called Chad Baker-Mazara “a passionate kid.” He’s 25. -
I’ll believe that one when I see it.

I’ll need to look at some games from this year. Watched a couple of his games as a Soph after he took an unofficial to Bloomington. At that time he was pretty much a traits guy. He was long. He could really run and change direction. He was super quick off his feet, maybe his best trait at that point. He had a little jump hook but otherwise there wasn’t much to his offense other than finishing. Played with pretty good effort for a kid. -

Ditto. I didn’t when the game started but after 2hrs of the announcers sounding like the St John’s radio network, go Hogs. -

According to both the Iowa article you referenced and 247 he’d had a WVU offer under DeVries. So certainly seems likely. -

Some guy popped into my feed positively fawning over McNeese’s defense and posted probably 7 clips, 5 of which were good looks that Clemson would have been perfectly happy with that they flat missed. -

https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/colby-garland-1.html Maybe 1 to keep in the back of the mind. Colby Garland from Longwood enters the portal. Lefty PG. Played for DeVries as a freshman. Averaged 12pts/4asts on decent shooting splits. 2 years of eligibility. -

Agree 100% and while I’d be shocked if he comes back I’d take him in a second over some kid just filling a back end roster slot. Will always have it stuck in my head watching Newton HS play Brownsville(TX) HS when he was a Jr and in a game with Stephon Castle, Ron Holland and Wesley Yates, Jakai was absolutely the best player on the floor and 1 of the announcers suggesting he was actually too good for IU and a better program was gonna poach him. -

POY in the state of Illinois as a Soph? That’s pretty good. -

Appreciate, Brother, very nice summary. I watched a fair amount of Hawthorne Wednesday night. Has some Brandon Ingram to him. Will need to dig into the other 2 this weekend. -
Murphy feels pretty pipe-dreamish, but I’ll be happy as hell to be wrong. Side note: for those concerned during the coaching search that IU is too, what was the phrase, holier than thou, to compete with the best, dude had a 2 year show cause after getting caught up in the same deal as Book Richardson. So, hey, there’s that.

I wish I had a dollar for every time Self looked at Dickinson in the last 2 years and thought, “Jesus, what was I thinking?” -
Barnett’s, what mid-30’s, something like that? He needs no part of ORU. Right now that’s a bad job. If DeVries wants to bring him along he should absolutely do it and after helping flip this thing for a season or 2 he’ll have a shot at a proper starter HC job.
-
Yup, he was Texas’ Mike Davis. He had no chance to keep that job. Put it on my tombstone: Never hire a guy under unusual circumstances that you wouldn’t hire under normal one’s.
-
I’m a firm believer that when a player turns 25 their eligibility should immediately terminate….except for Jerome. That guy hasn’t caught a break. Good for him having a night.
-
Hard to picture a worse fit. Sampson/Mgbako is Knight/Funderburke.
-
I got nothin’ but I’m already sick of typing DeVries, how lazy is that, so something needs to stick.
-
I hope Calbert sticks around in a shaking hands and kissing babies sort of role in the Athletic Dept. I think Chris mentioned a dept role at 1 point. But absolutely not in an actual coaching role.
-
I have no idea who this guy is, but he’s really good and I like this a lot.. The only thing I would quibble with, and he’d have no reason to know since he’s as not invested as we are, but since DeVries made it clear in the presser that Dolson was communicating during the season I doubt there were many guys at all that Scott would have burned through before landing on DeVries. Stevens and Drew, sure, probably Otzelberger, but I sort of think DeVries was the next name and if he expressed real interest anybody else subsequently was a contingency. I know we had pages and pages of “Scott loves McCollum” stuff, but I would think if that were really, really a thing he would have waited a week. He had the time to do that. I really think once you eliminate the no hopers this was his Guy.

Outstanding value added. Thanks so much and, please, keep it coming.
-
I love that he has a do not contact. I wonder if he didn’t if anyone would actually call?
-
If we’re lucky he’s Greg McDermott minus 12 years and with IU resources.
