1 interesting element for the current roster: DeVries got 10/6 out of Amani Hansberry, who’s very similar, though not nearly as good, as Reneau.

I’ve already found 1 thing to be annoyed about with Devries. My phone is convinced the V is capitalized and it’s not taking no for an answer.

The other element there is the West Virginia deal he took over was dead broken. They won 9 games the year before and returned no rotation guys at all. So he took their ok, but certainly no IU, NIL and rebuilt an entire roster from scratch to the point that he beat Tommy Lloyd, Mark Few, TJ Otzelberger and Bill Self, Otzelberger and Self without his best player.

I imagine that's correct. The Stevens stuff was such nonsense past shear due diligence. Dolson most likely spent the last 12 months profiling what he wanted for program leadership and doing some investigation into candidate fits who might be available. The search firm then filled in the blanks for him and when 1 of the guys he identified became available prematurely, thank you UNC AD, Dolson jumped. I don't see how that's not really, really good.

From your viewings of Devries teams at Drake and his year at West Virginia take us through the shortcomings and blindspots he exhibited that you spotted. Be specific. Come on, dazzle us with your insight.

I agree. But if Devries asked them about NIL and they told him they were still at a million, which they supposedly were last year, I imagine that would shut it down pretty quick.

I read somewhere that his plan was to stay there until both of his kids had finished school. I believe his daughter already has and his son is a senior and was a manager for the basketball team this year.

Because he’s a terrific coach who kept his head above water at a program that’s not built to win at the B1G level.

There is no such thing as a Brad Stevens/Dusty May/Will Wade echelon. 2 of those guys could have the job if they wanted it and 1 of them ain’t getting the job no matter how bad he wants it.

Yup, neither Iowa nor WVU have the financial means or NIL potential to compete with IU if Dolson decides he’s the guy. He’d have to take a lesser deal to go elsewhere.

Watched a locked on podcast from a couple of WVU guys and they weren’t that worried about Iowa poaching DeVries because they thought the financial situation there was no better than WVU. But they did a whole hypothetical on IU and absolutely thought that could be a problem. Apparently DeVries has an extension on the table that he has not signed.

That would be a spectacular result.

Doubt it’s him but would take Chris Collins in a New York minute. Very good X’s & O’s. Understands the B1G. Kept his head above water at a brutal gig. Was the lead recruiter at Duke. Has seen the IU thing up close and would undoubtedly view this as a destination job. Young enough. I know there are folks around here who’d hate it. Don’t care, they’re wrong.

I made a joke elsewhere about how wild it would be if neither of the major Indiana schools were recruiting a Xavier Booker-type because they were slugging it out over some kid from Mt Vernon. But I’m completely confident that scenario would arise at some point, though IU will always be able to recruit higher end kids than Purdue.

You got it. No matter where he’s recruiting going forward, McCollum’s gonna recruit to what he values. When you listen to the guy talk the game and his players there are 2 qualities he clearly values more than anything else, self-motivation and mental processing speed. And given how much motion he runs and how much read and react they have built in that makes perfect sense. But the thing we’d have to get used to with a guy like him is that he’d be the anti-Woody from a roster building perspective. For all the criticism of Woody recruiting based solely on the stars next to a kid’s name, the fact of the matter is those made for sexier, more interesting recruitments. I doubt McCollum gives the slightest $hit about stars. We say we want that, but if he starts recruiting dudes with offers from directional Michigan schools, and I doubt that would solely be the deal because every coach wants talent, but if he does, ya just gotta trust he knows what he wants and judge the development piece and the results.

Can you expand on this a little bit. My assumption would be that if there was a guy at this point they absolutely wouldn’t be talking because IU is/was still playing as would the team of any sitting coach. So that sounds exactly backwards to me.

So…..Assistant Coaches? Yeah, that is concerning. Seriously, and I didn’t hear it so I’m leery of context here, if Goodman suggested that McCollum has an X’s and O’s problem that may be the single stupidest thing anyone has said so far. In fact, no maybe, it is. Now, if he said he’d need an experienced recruiting coordinator, that I’d agree with.
