Yea or Nay: give seniors another year of eligibility?
Demo replied to RaceToTheTop's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
The one I haven’t been able to figure out is scholarship fairness. Everybody has 13 available scholarships. Perfectly fair. IU is graduating 2 Srs. Michigan is graduating 3. Penn St is graduating 4. So if they all get another year, does IU play with 15 scholarship players, Michigan with 16 and Penn St with 17? Over the course of a long year that could potentially be wildly unfair. No chance this happens. -

Yes, it would be. Which is why it’s never gonna happen. -
Carlik Jones from Redford to grad transfer, per Brian Snow. This kid, right here. That’s all I’m sayin’. It won’t happen, particularly after Lander, but he’s better than Phinisee.

https://www.hudl.com/video/2/423864/5e73ebfb4205f80c84bb96dc Pretty good, and long, video across several games. About 3 mins in shows him getting some work done against St Paul’s(Jordan Geronimo). Skill level is really impressive for such a young player. Beautiful stroke. Will be interesting to see if his athleticism catches up to his skill level. Kind of looks to me like a kid who could grow into a face up 4 rather than a wing. I imagine he blows up pretty good eventually. Nice job by Archie not wasting time. -
Alan Griffin transferring away from Illinois. Will be a solid 2 year get for somebody.

Staying in ‘21. Surprised by that.

(2021) SF - Aminu Mohammed to Georgetown
Demo replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
Yeah. Kaufman and Mohammed would be an almost perfect pairing. Mohammed’s best work is really done in the mid-range and getting downhill hard to the rim. He’s a different looking player, and not as ball or right hand dominant, but he has a lot of the same strengths as Romeo. Having a guy like Kaufman to play pick and roll/pop with who defenses can’t switch or leave would be dynamic as hell. Same with Lander. I can see Kaufman getting an awful lot of clean looks from 3 and Mohammed and Lander getting open lanes. They would be a freaking handful for anyone to deal with. -

Ya know, I’ve always thought that Archie talking about pushing pace and creating more shot attempts was just that, talk, and that at his core he’s a mid tempo guy. But lately I’ve been having this vision of Lander taking an outlet and getting hard downhill with Mohammed and Geronimo running the alleys and Kaufman trailing for the secondary 3, and it makes me smile, just a little. -
You’re right. But, to his credit, and I never thought I would type that, Chicken Sandwich is one of the few critical posters around here who is highly specific about what he wants from IU sports. MBB success followed very distantly by IUFB and nothing else matters. I don’t agree, really, really don’t agree, but his priorities are clear. And I assume this is a widely shared perspective, because, frankly, to prioritize things any other way would make it pretty tough to describe Glass’s tenure as anything but successful. And, clearly, a lot of folks don’t. But I don’t really know for sure, because a lot of the criticism of Glass and the Dolson hire are, outside of hiring/retaining Miller, pretty vague. I would be more interested to read about people’s specific vision of a successful AD tenure and how they plan to judge Dolson against that. I’ll probably get around to that at some point.

(2021) PG Khristian Lander to Western Kentucky U.
Demo replied to Uspshoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I think they’ve got that wrong. The rosters were announced the end of January. The watchlist was announced mid January, I believe. For Lander to have been eligible for consideration the selectors would have had to have been aware in advance of that. -
Sorry, just saw this. If you haven’t already watched it, and I’m too lazy to re-post it, go back to pg 14 of this thread and watch the video of the alley oop he finishes. You can count on a couple of hands how many kids have that kind of vertical explosion with that little effort. Just incredible. Vic is 6’4” with a 6’9” reach and had a 42 standing vert. This kid is 6’6”, I’m guessing about a 7’ reach and can go north of 40” with no gather. Not saying he’ll be a Vic level of player at all, highly unlikely, but he is absolutely that level of athlete. Yeah, I think he might finish that dunk.

I must have missed his good games. All I ever saw was a tough kid, kind of a Brad Davison type, except he couldn’t shoot, to the extent that teams were always playing under his ball screens. Not sure what purpose that serves on this roster.

My inclination would be no, though I wouldn’t be that bothered if it happened. But here’s my question: Would you allow ‘20 signees to unilaterally rescind their commitments if a significant factor in their decision was roster construction and available minutes that would then change if a Sr was allowed another year? Seems like the logical extension of that idea. -

i don’t know if the kid can play at all, but this is hysterical and must be shared. Shows him playing in pick and roll......and not getting the ball. Posting up.....and not getting the ball. Running the floor.......and not getting the ball. In this 5 minute clip, with his name in the title, mind you, he touches the ball a total of 4 times. 3 baskets, including dunking on a kid, and 1 terrible turnover. Also commits, not 1, but 2 and 1 fouls. Who posts this? -

Don’t really know what think of it, and maybe my sample size is too small, but Landers’ play really, really seems to have elevated since he committed. He was pretty up and down in the games of his I watched earlier in the year. Example: in the CBC(Caleb Love) game he was flat out bad in the 1st half and pretty good in the 2nd. Watched a couple of others where his talent far outran his actual play. I know he’s had an ankle, so maybe it’s health related, but since he committed he’s been absolutely killing people. Glad to see it. -
I keep thinking of the alley oop that Vic missed and this kid would have flushed it.
-
The sheer effortlessness of his explosion....not sure I’ve ever seen anything quite like it. The block at the 3:43 mark, Jesus, he doesn’t even gather. Incredible. Even if the kid’s game never fully develops, he’s gonna make some plays that people never stop talking about.

Obviously if there was ever a ship on this one it sailed with the Lander commitment, but Rudi Williams was named his conference POY. -

Interesting information. After the game I saw that Bruiser went to a couple of months back he and Harmon were hanging out and absolutely looked like boys. I mean really laughing it up. So I’ve assumed all along that their relationship was where this jumped off. If he’s an IU fan and they have a great relationship as well so much the better. Have thought all along that this was pretty unlikely to come together. But starting to develop some guarded optimism. -
Jimmy Jackson with the best “feed the narrative” line of the day so far: the Harris kid from Providence knocks a ball away from Colin Gillespie, saves it from going out of bounds and it results in a tie up that goes to Nova. Webber proceeds to extol the hustle play by Gillespie. The Providence kid literally outhustled him to the ball. But he’s not the kid with the name.

Is there an example of a kid announcing an intention to reclassify who then wasn’t able to or ultimately didn’t? Off the top of my head I can’t think of 1. -

Archbishop Carroll is in the same conference as DeMatha and Gonzaga, which have obviously produced an insane amount of talent, and Muhammad was 1st team all-conference as a freshman. Averaged something like 18 and 10. -
You’ve seen more of his streams than I have, but that assessment strikes me as dead accurate.

If Lander wants to reclassify, that’s obviously up to him and his family. But Vonleh had the body of a 25 year old man. Lander has the body of a 17 year old kid. -

I’ve written some above about the nature of his school’s competition. But a couple of things to maybe assuage your concerns: 1) Mohammed was the leading scorer at last summer’s Pangos 100 camp, which included, among many others, Jonathon Kuminga, Cade Cunningham, Paolo Banchero and Terrance Clarke. 2) He was one of the leading scorers on the EYBL circuit last year while playing up a year for Boo Williams. He was the leading scorer on a team that included Cam Thomas, who’s a top 25 type kid going to LSU. So, yeah, he’s beating the hell out of a lot of HS kids who have no chance against him. But he’s done the same against some of the best players in the country. The kid is really, really good. If anything, his level of HS competition might be depressing his ratings some. If he was playing for a basketball factory he’d be a top 5-8 type kid, even in a class as good as ‘21. IU’s roster is likely to include several similarly sized wing guards in ‘21-22. In this case, I don’t care. Mohammed is on a different level from them. If he wants to come, you take him and figure it out. He’s a 15-17 pts/gm guy the day he walks on campus. fwiw
