It's actually worthless. If your only measurement is making the tournament, then yeah Mediocre Mike is in a team picture with a bunch of guys. If you're concerned more about the processes used to build a foundation and sustain success over multiple years, then Mike gets a gigantic F-.

That is completely delusional. Someone who has done that probably isn't interested in the IU job. Who would even fit that description? Pearl and ????? Would Painter?

These guys need sure things. It's the difference between hiring Pearl vs Dusty. Both may work out, but one is a definite will work out.

So you're looking after the fact -- that's the easy way. :) Domask -- 4 years at SIU to Big10 -- turned out, but 3 pt % took a dump. Jenkins -- Followed his coach. Wasn't available? Sallis -- 25% from three before he transferred. Would have fit right in at IU. Did make a big jump this year. Conwell -- still playing at a "lower" level. Spencer -- Would have been a good pickup. Wonder why we didn't get him. Do you really think our staff can do their homework and find potential diamonds in the rough?

The further down in the portal rankings, the more able you'll be to fill spots. That's a simple proposition. However, if you want IU to be any good, you need several of the top players. History suggests that will be an uphill climb. A) Best other programs have been able to do is 3 of the top 50. B) Why the hell would any top player want to join the crew of the Titanic? C) We had a top incoming freshmen and he bailed within 24 after it was announced the coach would be back. The word is out on IU and Woodson. We can try to paper over it with Benjamins, but the odds are against us.

That sounds good as long as MR doesn't put his head down and dribble into double and triple teams. :)

Maybe. MR is still a bit one dimensional. MM made great improvement. Galloway is a great glue guy type but he is what he is. You're still going to need a few true studs out of the portal and there is no reason to come to IU vs another better program. That's the problem.

Your relying on a dude who plays at a lower competition level to come up and kill it at the power 5 level. How often does that happen? Bold strategy Cotton.

The portal is primarily made up of two types of players. 1) disgruntled guys looking for playing time and 2) dudes looking to move up a level. Add a few who’s coaches got fired. Very few are studs, and if they are they are looking to go to a winning team i.e.; Dickenson. It’s going to be an uphill battle for mediocre mike.

Why would a single “high end” guard come to IU, let alone 2? The idea that we’ll have a big ten championship team one year out of the portal is a pipe dream.

Just replying to the post that said need 3 in the top 25. Only 1 of those guys even played in a P5 conference against P5 competition. The other 2 are unproven at that level. It's a risk.
