Idea to balance the Big Ten schedule even further
CrossboneIU22 replied to Brass Cannon's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I agree unless we went to 20 teams that completely separated into 2, 10 Team divisions and and went back to a 18 game schedule and played everyone in your own division 2 times. -

how about the B1G just go all the way with this and make it a 26 game conference schedule and true Round Robin. Then you will have a balanced conference. Instead of playing other Power 5 teams out of conference like Arkansas, Notre Dame, and Butler, just play everyone in conference. Same talent level. Leave ya with 5 out of conference games. Schedule 2 low-high mid major level teams, keep the ACC/B1G Challenge and then 1-2 other opponents (Cough Cough, Kentucky and Louisville). -

Small sample sizes but to answer your questions: 2016 - 65.7% (222-338) 2017 - 65.5% (232-354) 2018 - 70.5% (215-305) Would need a larger sample size to really make any conclusions but on the surface it appears that it could have made a difference. I would like to see the numbers vs a team that uses those long plastic balloon sticks that wave and bang together to make noise (Sorry if that is what you mean by birthday balloons above).

Our biggest problem I see for next year is shooting from distance. Can Al and Devonte pick it up? Romeo would solve this issue BIG time. Can Smith be consistent and confident shooting away from the goal? We are going to need this outside shooting to keep teams from just loading the block.

Corruption in College Basketball
CrossboneIU22 replied to Stuhoo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Not sure if this has been posted or shares anything new, but since it is relevant, I'm going to share it here. https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/college-basketballs-fbi-probe-gets-specific-with-players-teams-named-in-report/ This is the report released by CBS sports this morning. -

Yeah that is another concern but I was trying to focus on the positives even though I finished it with the recruiting. But I do agree, the FT% concerns me and the fact that his teams have never been great FT shooting teams.

Yes, I forgot to put that tidbit in there as well, but it is @Maryland so I think its not out of the realm of possibility.

This is speculation but IF: We can beat @Nebraska We can beat Ohio State Penn State can beat @Nebraska We would finish tied in 5th place with Nebraska in the Big Ten. We would get the 5th seed via the Tie-Breaker. If Penn State were to also beat Michigan There would be a 4 way tie for 4th in the Big Ten with Michigan, IU, Penn State, and Nebraska I am not sure the Tie-Breaker scenarios in a 4 team tie, but in my opinion it would be in the order I listed but I could be wrong.

For the first time in a long time I have a great deal of optimism at the end of the year and really wish we had another month of watching this team play. There are many reasons for this and if you will allow me, I am going to address those in this post. 1. First and foremost, and it took a while this season, but we have seen a team get better game after game at the end of the year. We didn't peak in January like most teams under CTC. We don't look dejected, tired, and downright miserable in February like we have seen for the majority of the past 9 years. 2. We have a better B1G record this year than last year with a less talented team. I do not believe the B1G is as down as many believe, so that is up for debate here, but we have virtually the same team minus the 2 G-Leaguers and 1 NBA player and didn't gain near that talent. Smith is playing well and Al has had a good game here and there but at this point, they are not at the same level but yet we still have a better league record and a similar overall record to this point. 3. We are playing great Defense. Something we only saw one year under CTC and that was mainly due to Vic and Zeller. A team that should have been to the Final 4. Victor was great at getting steals and deflections which led to a lot of fast break points. 4a. Half Court Offense is actually being ran and working to get good shots. 4b. We can also beat a zone offensively. We know where the ball needs to go and where to look once it gets there. Our passing needs improvement to be much more effective in this area but that will come in future seasons when Archie doesn't have to spend so much time on the defensive side of the game. 5. The bench is used as a punishment/motivator. We never saw this under CTC. 6. Turnovers are not being tolerated. 7. Substitutions are not pre-planned and happen as the game requires. 8. Big Heads are GONE! If the Big Heads would have made more sense, I could have gotten on board, but what in the hell does Samuel L Jackson, Chuck Norris, Will Smith, a Panda Bear, and Big Bird have to do with IU? I understand Victor Oladipo, Zeller, Cuban, the We are IU campaign guys, and I can even understand where's waldo with the Red and White but the heads that were being used were poorly done in my opinion. 9. I think we can actually do something in the B1G Tournament for a change. The way we are playing defense gives us a chance in almost every game we play recently. 10. Its a stretch but I feel like we have a long shot at still making the Tourney or at the least making the NIT and possibly winning it. I am excited about the future of IU Basketball and what Archie Miller can do with this program. I was not a fan of this hire in the beginning but he has won me over by watching his coaching style this season and doing what he has with this team. The only area I still have concern is in recruiting. It is still a work in progress for me, as we really only have 4 committed recruits in his tenure so far, so I am anxious to see how he will be able to recruit and specifically the state of Indiana, so verdict is still out. I do like the 4 he has coming in, but its not a highly ranked class and for us to be successful long term on a national scale like Kansas, UNC, Duke, and UK, we will need higher ranked recruits and higher ranked recruiting classes going forward. Can he produce them? We will see. My feelings or hope is yes, but until I see it, I have to remain open minded and skeptical at this point. Thanks for reading! Let's Beat Nebraska!

If a 14-4 (Or even a 13-5, or 12-6) Power Coference team is left out of the tourney, then the grading system is junk! Personally, I don't feel the B1G is as down as many of you, I feel its just more even minus the top 3 teams. I realized we got blasted by the ACC in the challenge but I put that on the match-ups in my opinion. Then going to a 20 game conference season next year, you're going to start seeing junk non conference schedules from more and more B1G teams to make sure teams go into B1G play with minimal losses because your going to be beating up more teams within your own coference.

Game Thread : Minnesota @ Indiana | 7:30EST on FS1
CrossboneIU22 replied to Trish's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Just goes to show you how bad a coach Crean was/is. He had Blackmon and Bryant and more healthy Davis. Plus Johnson was much more effective than he is this year in shooting %. It’s not like the incoming Freshman have come close to matching the production of three NBA players that left. Well maybe OG and Moore but only bc OG was out with injury. -

Who let the Minnesota announcers in Assembly Hall and sit them at the TV broadcast table? And where are the impartial Fox Sports 1 announcers that were supposed to do this game? -
At this point, I'm not sure I see Moore here next year unfortunately. If he can't get playing time on this team, he's certainly not getting it when better players come in.

Shooting vs Strength Training
CrossboneIU22 replied to CrossboneIU22's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Couldn't disagree more as I have personally experienced it. -
This may not be a popular take but I've seen it too many times in the past 10 years when it comes to shooting. It seems like our Freshman and Sophomores get worse in shooting as the year progresses. In my opinion I feel this is due to the Strength program. I really feel the Strength part of our program should primarily take place in the summer time. During the season maybe some light weights just to keep the muscle tone where it is but I feel the increase in strength, especially arm strength is killing our shooting. Durham went from hitting 3's at a good clip in the first few games to not being able to hit the rim. I saw it with Yogi his frehsman and sophomore year. Others players that I have seen a similar trend with in the past have been players like Johnson, Robinson, Ethrington, Hartman, Hoetzel, Shehee, and even Blackmon his sophomore year among others. I don't have any facts handy to support these claims, other than the fact that I know when I was in high school and we were doing strength training for basketball, my shot was terrible but afterwards it came back to the pure shooter that I was. Luckily we only did strength during the summer and none during the season. The pre-season and beginning of the year was all about conditioning. Do the players have any say in their strength and conditioning program? Is it predetermined by the CAM or the strength coach? Other thoughts?

Romeo v Phinisee - Hypothetical debate
CrossboneIU22 replied to cleeter's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I hate how in today's college basketball player, a four year player is typically thought of as a failure in terms of the NBA or at the very least looked at in a negative light. If you don't go early, you weren't as successful. It reminds me of the dilemma of Yogi. For one, if Yogi would have been 2 inches taller I feel he would have maybe been a lottery pick and certainly a first round pick. For second, if he would have went after his Freshman year, he was highly touted, highly talked about and in my opinion probably would have been drafted. But if he did, I think his NBA career would have flamed out like many early entrants have. Instead he stayed 4 years, learned that work ethic and really pushed himself to be where he is today. His NBA career is in much better position now then had he left early and been drafted instead of staying 4 years and not being drafted. Now I will say this, his game was a little exposed in his Sophomore and caused his draft stock to fall. He got some of that back in his Junior year as he had to make the decision to stay or go. Had he gone, would he have been drafted? Don't know. Did he hurt his chances of being drafted by staying a 4th year? Don't really know. But we do know that he wasn't drafted after playing 4 years and being one of the best college players in the country his senior year. It all comes back to the one and done rule (which I understand is an NBA decision, not and NCAA one) and I hope they figure out something to end it because I would rather watch a player come to college for 4 years (4 preferable but at least 3 years) than to see him for 1 or even 2 years. I like to see the maturation of the players and how the teams gel each year with seniors and freshman and all in between. I like investing my interest into the players and watching them play for my favorite team for multiple years. I know it would never happen, but in today's society, most executive or high paying positions require higher education (post high school) to be qualified. With the money the NBA players make, I would love to see them adopt this. They could have in conjunction with their G league, an associates degree program for players who don't want to go to a 4 year college and have the potential and ability to be drafted right away from High School to the NBA. The course load could be about life, finances, ethics, and essential things that are inclusive to NBA life and highly paid athletes and work around the G league schedule. Then those players that do want to go the college route, they can go 3-4 years, graduate with a degree and become eligible for the NBA draft. It can showcase their game on a national level or allow for maturation and development of their game to become an NBA level talent. Sorry, slightly off topic, but I guess my short answer is, I'd enjoy watching the 4 year player over the one and done player. However, in the game today, I feel you need a combination of experience and talent to win it all and those two things are becoming more and more exclusive of each other as talent leaves early and experience isn't always highly talented.
