(2023) CG DeShawn Harris-Smith to Maryland
lillurk replied to Stuhoo's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
Maybe both are having a nice summer -
I’ll guess Kaiser, though if we were competing I’d say Sisley. No insight, except he’s from an openly pro-IU household, lives nearby, and has an offer…if he likes what IU has to offer I could see him wrapping it up. (Could make a similar case for Haralson, with a brother at IU, but I think that’s less of a sure thing at this point.)

I know it’s common knowledge that Gabe’s father, Brook, is his HS coach. Has anyone pointed out that when he played with the North Coast Blue Chips his coaches are his father and the father of his teammate, Bronny James? I know if his LeBron connection but has not realized the dads coached together.

I would guess — and the credible “not done” chatter suggests — they want to get to 18. In hoops, that’s easy: three protected double plays, the other 14 teams once. In football, you play your three protected games annually, plus six others, and you play everyone (plus one repeat) every 3 years.

I think it’s 1. good for the B1G, 2. Good for IU, and 3. funny, so I’m for it.

The Michigan noise was all from the player’s side. I know less about the UL situation, but can imagine it would’ve made some sense to take the risk there, in a transition year, more so than UM.

Pretty nice gym, too. For all the hype and criticism, it sure doesn’t seem like Emoni’s at fault. Good luck to him. I thought Louisville was an interesting potential fit: transition season, not a ton to lose if it doesn’t work in year one, at least. If it did work, there’s some mutual upside. At one point it seemed like a foregone conclusion, and I’m curious what happened there.

I’d love to play UK, and maybe I’m in the minority here, buuuut…I don’t hate the status quo. No need to throw Cal a bone, occasionally we play in the tournament, and IU can build a nice schedule without UK. If Kenny Payne wants a couple years to get ready for a home-and-home series, we’ll wait.

IMO Geronimo is a lock for either conference 6th man of the year or an all-conference team. Occasionally a guy makes both.

B1G Standings Predictions for 2022/2023
lillurk replied to Stuhoo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I was shocked PU never really tried a Hillis/Furst/three guards look last year to see if it would shore up the defense. Obviously it has some flaws — not a good plan against Kofi or Dickinson, for example — but part of their problem on defense was the C tandem could be exploited if you got them switched onto guards. I know they have some big project backup C as usual but I doubt he’ll be ready for the full backup role. So I wonder if we’ll see something like that this year in spurts. -
B1G Standings Predictions for 2022/2023

I did a first pass at my sheet of every conference game for every team. I reserve the right to change this but as of today, 6/21/22, here’s how it shook out: 1. IU 16-4 2. Illinois 15-5 3. UM 14-6 *t-4. Purdue, UW, OSU 11-9 **7. Rutgers 10-10 **8. Iowa 10-10 **9. MSU 10-10 10. PSU 11-9 11. Maryland 7-13 ***12. Northwestern 6-14 ***13. Minnesota 6-14 14. Nebraska 4-16 Tiebreaks: *Wisconsin beat Purdue but lost to OSU, and Purdue beat OSU, so absent other info they all tie with the same record at 4th. **Rutgers has the tiebreaker over MSU, split with Iowa, and Iowa split with MSU in my projections, thus the rank within the 10-10 teams ***NW won the only matchup between them and Minny. -
Here as with Kaiser, I think, you see the possible upside of having the head ball coach make his presence a big deal. You can succeed recruiting by really grinding, logging the miles on the jet, no question. But Kaiser pushing his date back, Woody showing up here after the visit this week and IU seemingly having a seat at the table…if your presence is special you get noticed. (and I’m betting Walsh deserves some credit for helping us get back in this one)

He wasn’t perfect, and when it ended it was probably time. I think he might agree, this far removed. To paraphrase John Gasaway, if basketball coaches divided responsibilities like football staffs, he’d have a reputation as a terrific offensive coordinator.

Crean had four top ten offenses in five years starting in ‘11-‘12, and a borderline top 25 one the sixth year, after which he got fired. Miss me with the revisionist history.
-
They’re really different dudes, but this stands out. Crean was demanding, goofy, and actually won meaningful stuff at IU, and his players, broadly speaking, seem to maintain a fondness for him. I’d add that in the macro, his offenses are IU were truly excellent, not just a matter of reputation.

B1G Standings Predictions for 2022/2023

This is spot on, I had tried to say something similar in the summer thread but this is better. I’ll do a table to pick each game, like @vemmeistars did, but to tip my hand a little more I’ll say I’m more bearish on OSU than the consensus here. -
This is especially true the further down the recruiting rankings you go. Romeo and TJD: great. Race: good pickup further down. Missed on lots of top ~40 guys who were good (UNC’s backcourt, Garland, etc.) but did very poorly at identifying and developing guys who weren’t sure things.
-
Yes, I’ve been thinking this all offseason. The hoped-for depth isn’t much about projection, IU returns a bunch of players who have played meaningful roles on a tourney team: TJD, Race, X, JG, Kopp, and Trey. Add in a guy who got some burn and doesn’t hurt you (Leal), and a sophomore who had flashes (Bates) and you’re not even asking anything of the newcomers when you say this team will be good and have some depth. Every leap from Bates and the frosh is gravy.

As an undersized non-pg, Utah to B1G, Jenkins Jr. bears some superficial resemblance to Alonso Plummer. But Plummer got to play next to, arguably, the second-best guard in the conference, in Trent Frazier, and Jenkins…doesn’t get that luxury. (Not to mention Demo’s less-than-ringing endorsement.)
