I think the Woody hire is when it set in with me. NIL rejuvenated my enthusiasm because Indiana was never crooked enough to dance with the best. NIL changed that. But Woody got the benefits of that. Ugh. Then you get the chance to make a REAL splash in the NIL era. You hire DeVries. I mean, I guess that’s ok. Maybe. Not a splash but it can be ok. Gotta overspend to win, when the program results don’t speak for themselves. And we don’t have the funds to overspend on enough guys. It’s a tangled mess we lie in. Exactly. This was my point all along. That’s why you take the job. Then he targets all these top level 2026 freshman because we are Indiana and we can’t afford to win a single top level recruitment. Then what are we even doing? Bargain basement shopping? That’s not why you take a big budget job. DeVries is basketball smart but he wasn’t ready for Indiana. If we were gonna bottom basement shop, you hire McCollum. Figure out a way to let DeVries build a competent roster and it’s a 1 year trial. I don’t blame them. They might not know ball, but I don’t blame them. Our admin has goofed everything up you can goof up. Since Knights firing. But DeVries not knowing this roster didn’t stack up is the biggest concern. He clearly wanted to get off on the right foot, then built this roster.
