Game Thread: vs. Northwestern 1/8/23 at Noon on FS1

If you would have told me that Trayce would have 18 points and 23 rebounds, and JHS would have 33 pts… No way would I believe you that we lost… -

I may be wrong…but I want to see what Banks can do in a 5-6 minute stretch. I have a hard time believing it will be less than what JG is bringing right now. -

The last Gunn turnover happened because Geronimo put him in a horrible spot IMO. I think Gunn provided a spark for that run. Brought an entirely different energy to the court. -
What's wild is they pulled back the technical on Geronimo, and called it just a delay of game, which still gave them a free throw. I guess the ref thought maybe he tossed the ball in a lofty/high/slow manner to him, delaying the game...fine. But what happened to players getting a warning first before getting an actual delay of game? Just jumped directly to a delay of game call. The rest of the game had players on both sides touching/hitting the ball after it going through the hoop, and nothing was called. Was just very bizarre. Not to mention the blatant goal tend by JG later in the game that the refs just overlooked ha-ha.
-
There was a 5 minute + stretch where he looked like he was unaware it was an organized game with refs and rules. Fouls, travels, lost on defense, turnovers, the goaltend that somehow wasn't called. For every plus there were 2-3 minuses. He looked like an athletic kid trying to figure out how to play basketball. His athleticism allows him to block shots, get tips and rebound, but he's just not a "basketball" player yet IMO. He's still learning, and that is hard to do in Big Ten play. With that said...Reneau was unable to be on the floor. He's trying to go too fast, needs to just slow down and let the game come to him. I wouldn't of minded a couple minutes of Banks here and there for JG, or even some Duncomb. But I'm just an old guy on the couch ha-ha.
-
Let me be clear...we let them come back from a 20 point deficit...this is solely on us. But...I am very interested how the Big Ten would answer for a Technical being given to Fran for coming down to our bench and causing that scene, and then somehow taking the technical back? In the same game that Geronimo get's a delay of game for tossing the ball to a ref allowing them a free-throw, Iowa get's a called technical that was clearly warranted retracted at a pivotal game deciding point...mindboggling. Also just as curious to see how the Big Ten handles Woody's comments post game on it.

I doubted Smith for Purdue…mocked him a little. I regret that… Kid is tough and can flat out play. Really impressive as a freshman, running the show for Purdue at a high level. I didn’t even know who he was coming into the season and I live in Indiana…

I remember there being chatter on here several years ago about East, while he was at New Albany. I watched a couple of their games and even though he was small, he impressed me. Awesome to see him getting a shot and taking full advantage.

I am very, very, very confused right now haha.

That hurts... I had a couple discussions with a current IU coach that thinks Varner will be a pro.

People seem to be focusing on just jerseys...but again, I also don't think this is 100% true. The overall gear, which includes uniforms, are one of the many small things that provide additional tools in helping recruit elite recruits. If you think they don't care what the uniforms, gear and overall swag looks like, we probably won't ever agree there, which is totally fine. Again, I am in no way arguing jerseys help 'win' games. But I think all of the small stuff does help attract the recruits we need which will then help us win games...And to be clear, I have admitted a couple times that I'm not sure how far we are off, truly. But I also want to turn every stone over to help Woody land the top recruits we are recruiting and getting to visit. To say something positive...I would note that I think social media is important to these kids and a tool they are utilizing constantly...IU Men's basketball Social Media Presence I think has drastically improved over the last couple years. I think there is still room to grow, but I am happy with some of the steps they have taken to increase and modernize posts. I'd like to even see more behind the scenes, player interviews, practice clips, highlighting facilities/resources, etc.
-
Not trying to be cheeky. But by this comment, do you agree then that IU should do the things that Elite level recruits want, to attract them here, to improve our roster and have a team that can knock down those 3 balls? If the talent level we currently have on our roster isn't getting it done, what can we do to bring in better talent? I think that is the point people are trying to make...It is basic recruiting at any level in, any industry...You do everything you can to recruit elite talent and ensure you are competing with or exceeding your competition. If they are doing something that is allowing them to be more attractive, you better darn sure jump on the wagon.

I hope that people don't think this is the main reason we aren't winning games...but I don't think anyone is actually saying that. I do however think there may be a valid case to be made that this is one of many examples of how we have fallen behind the programs that are actually Elite in college basketball today. And like many other things, this possibly gives us one less recruiting tool for the recruits we need to get us back to winning games and being Elite. The kids care, and if they care, so should our program. When you are actually Elite and leading the pack, you can choose the direction and set the trend...unfortunately, many feel that we are several cars back in the carpool and have to follow to either catchup, or get left behind. I still don't know truly how far we are behind in this arena. But yeah, well, that's just like, my opinion, man (favorite movie).
-
I hear both sides of this, and think that there are definitely issues greater than our apparel that are holding us back..but I think there is definitely an argument to be made that in this day and age, the gear that is offered to the players, and the need to keep up with the major trends of college basketballs elite programs on this front is important to not only the players that we have, but the type of recruits that we must target to get us back to an elite program. If the elites weren't doing it, it would be a gimmick. But they are doing it, and I think kids care. Whether it should matter or not is irrelevant, because Kids these days care about fashion in the social media era that we are in. Jerseys, shoes, warm ups, sweats, etc. all matter to these kids. Heck..it even matters to alumni. I just saw a instagram video of an Auburn Alum now in the NBA, roasting the school for sending him a $29 alumni swag bag. He opened it in the locker room and a teammate posted the video saying "You should have gone to Alabama". Kids are seeing this stuff, and it matters. The arugment to be had IMO is not whether or not we should be doing it, but truly how far behind are we. I can't honestly answer that question.

I agree, I want them to have fun, but not at the expense of playing hard and winning some darn games. It should be all business until they prove they have some darn grit…and can win games outside of Bloomington. Back to back nationally televised butt whoopings. 22 turnovers, 50 pts allowed in the paint…first 20+ pt loss as a ranked team since 2009. No fire, no leadership and no identity! -

I had the chance to, but as several have said in here before…all you had to do was watch him in HS to know it would be hard for him to see the floor and get major minutes at this level. He’s Slow laterally, not overly athletic and just shoots the ball okay. He plays hard, was Mr. Basketball and is a really good kid that loves Indiana. If he’s okay with his spot, I’m okay with him being there and supporting this program. -

This went from bad, to worse. Looks like they have just quit. I really didn’t expect to see a Mike Woodson team do this. Makes me worry. -
