Is it calling him out or trashing him? Those are two extremely different things. Yes, I do call him out. Sure, if our guards are getting in the lane and we're converting there is absolutely value there. That comes with a big IF on the other end of the floor in that he isn't going to get beat. His ability to defend changes drastically between little sisters of the poor and Big 1.o opponents. If he's a net positive he should get plenty of run. When he's not he should be sitting the bench. That goes for any player on the team. Watch the difference between others helping in the lane and getting back out to their man and when Kopp does it. The opponent gets consistent looks when Kopp is that defender. Also, for whatever reason Kopp and whatever other defender gets confused on ball screens. There was an obvious example in the game today when Kopp gave up a wide open layup when he and TJD had a simple ball screen at the top of the key. That happens quite a bit. You could probably find 100+ examples of just these two areas in Kopp's 40ish games at IU. That's not including when he gets straight beat by a more athletic opponent. I'm sure we'll see plenty of that as we get further into the Big 1.o season. There is a reason why he's typically not on the floor late in games where we have the lead. Slight difference in rebounding and jump shooting although TJD should be capable of making a jump shot. Everyone should be rebounding, not getting rebounds out of your 3 leads to some of what we've seen with the rebounding issues. When the ball hits your hands or lands in your lap and you struggle to control it there are problems. Who would replace Kopp in the starting lineup? Maybe Gallo? He's better off the bench. Bates? He needs to improve in multiple areas before he's starting. I was afraid we wouldn't see the jump with Bates that a lot of talented players see from their freshman to sophomore years. Really hope he (Bates) figures it out. He did convert on his twos today. I'm happy he made them. He still should be taking fewer or none at all. I don't think we'll miss Kopp as much as we'll miss others. Hopefully, some of the wings in waiting will make that jump before next season starts.

We need all the moral victories we can get

I'd wait and see on that UNC game. Q1 at home is top 30 right? UNC has lost to any team with a pulse in the noncon but do have opportunities against O$U and Michigan coming up. They proven they can get on a run but they'll actually need to win games to stay in the top 30.

There will be some rolling their eyes... TJD is not a natural leader. It's not in his personality. He's an extremely gifted basketball player and I'm sure a nice young man. He's proven his inability to lead and most of the game threads from last season has many of the reasons. I'm happy with these players even their flaws. Although some of the off-court decisions made by XJ could be better. Look back at both the UNC and Xavier games to see who the leads this team. We need better consistency from XJ and for him to stay on the right side of the emotional line. When that happens the rest of the team responds.

What have I posted that’s trashing him? He struggles to rebound - there are countless examples of this including multiple in todays game. He over helps - plenty of film on this including multiple times today (he’s not quick enough to contest when he starts in the lane) He shouldn’t be shooting twos and concentrating on getting as many good looks from deep as possible. The numbers and eye test show this. He had a fantastic game today shooting. That’s what we need from him. I posted as much throughout the game cheering his shooting on. We needs those to work together (inside and outside game) it’s great that he helps space the floor for XJ and JHS to attack but when he’s not hitting he’s not adding much. (The numbers prove this too)

Maybe get TJD in some action where he’s moving towards the rim and not catching it with his back to the basket. (Maybe inject some fire in his belly and some leadership while we’re at it) Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

Glad we backed up our talking on the court. That always seems to work with players of that mindset. We need to play superb defense and get in transition against the better teams in the Big 1.o. We got punched in the mouth and responded like we did for most of last season. This is how the Big 1.o has been officiated for years and it's not changing anytime soon.

A few rebounds, few less turnovers, and moving the ball would have the game tied or us in the lead. We were rattled and then pouted.

We're going to talk about how we're going to final get that win then come out in the first half playing like that. Give me slightly on the edge XJ to lead this group. He's got work to do in the second half.
