I'm worried about in-state recruiting.
HoosierAloha replied to FKfootball's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I guess I'm in between in this argument. I don't think Crean is well respected in the state but I don't think we missed out on a ton of talent (by his standards, played HS ball instate and top 50 guys). I definitely think we missed on some but there's reason more than Crean for that. -

I would say we have a chance with Scruggs but it's not likely. If Scruggs makes it to campus for that OV I like our chances even more. I'm not sure how much PT we could offer and even less at the point. If he's willing to take a backseat to players like JN, RoJo, and possibly JBJ he'll have plenty of time as a sophomore. I'm not sure he's willing to wait. -
Nice, CuJo could be that scoring threat off the bench that some want JBJ to be. It's a good problem to have but if CuJo is a scoring threat RoJo might continue to take a backseat at guard. I see RoJo as the player that does the small things to win while JBJ seems focused on scoring.

IU was under sanctions that limited recruiting though. I 'd imagine that cut into the $$$ spent for recruiting. -

Has anyone been able to consistency land the top Indiana prospects every year? Did IU even do that when RMK was winning nattys? This is a list of your description from 2007 (from or played HS ball in Indiana and top 50) 2007 - 1 Gordon (IU), 27 Moore (pu), 44 Johnson (pu), 50 Martin (pu) 2008 - 16 Zeller (UNC), 49 Garcia (Memphis) 2009 - N/A 2010 - 19 Thomas (O$U) 2011 - 7 Teague (puke), 10 Zeller (IU), 17 Dawson (MSU), 50 Chandler (UCF) 2012 - 17 Robinson (UM), 19 Harris (MSU), 21 Yogi (IU), 36 Hollowell (IU) 2013 - 29 Irvin (UM), 34 Jackson (ND) 2014 - 10 Lyles (puke), 20 JBJ (IU), 39 Bluiett (X) 2015 - 18 Swan (pu), 37 Lands (Ill), 50 Humphries (puke) 2016 - 37 Guy (UVA) Straight by the numbers: IU (5/24), pu (4/24), puke (3/24), UM (2/24), MSU (2/24), ND (1/24), Ill (1/24), X (1/24), UNC (1/24), O$U (1/24), UCF (1/24), Memphis (1/24), UVA (1/24) Observations... That coach who shall not be named was more concerned about bringing in guys that were NOT like Moore, Johnson, Martin, and Zeller. Proof, look what happened when things blew up. Thomas ended up at O$U because of connections with the staff. Teague was a good player but was an OAD. Dawson and Chandler had character issues. (opinion) Not too upset we missed on them. Robinson blew up late if I recall. We were on Hollowell for awhile. Wish we could have landed Harris though. Irvin would have been a nice get but we landed Troy instead. I don't see how Jackson plays behind Yogi until he's a senior. Lyles, no thanks. He's a good player but dad wanted things. Bluiett would have been a good get. Swan doesn't fit, would have to completely change offense. Coleman-Lands had an okay frosh campaign but he would have had limited playing time at IU behind Yogi, JBJ, RoJo, and then on down the list. Humphries, not really an Indiana kid but played at LaLu. Guy, would have been a good get but would also be playing behind upperclass guards. I think CuJo and DG might work better by not expecting as much PT early on. I guess we'll see. -

I agree on some of your points but don't feel as strongly as you do on others. Yes, Crean probably doesn't have a great relationship with Indiana high school coaches like Painter and Holtmann. What have Painter and Holtmann achieved that Crean has not? Do those two have relationships with others in different regions that provide players when the state is down? Those two have great relationships that have yielded how many top players from the state? If IU focuses on just Indiana and there is a down year instate what do they do? If one class is position heavy from the state do we just take all of them and have an unbalanced roster again? Hummel and J Johnson committed to pu before Crean was at IU. Swan wasn't the "right player" in an uptempo system like Crean prefers to run. He's lost a ton of weight but he's not the athletic transition player like Williams or OG nor is he the trail shooter of a CWat. He might be able to play the 5 in Crean's system but he (his handler) didn't want to play the 5. D Thomas, Conley, and Oden went to O$U because of "connections." They weren't coming to IU because of the situation IU was in, not being recruited. Teague and Lyles, wasn't Lyles' daddy looking for a job or handout? We had him until other things came into play. Dawson, no thanks. I don't think that would have been a good situation. I would have loved to have had Robinson, Irvin, Bluiett, HARRIS!, and Guy but it didn't happen. However, Crean has landed some solid instate players in Hulls, Zeller, Yogi, and JBJ. The 2012 class where IU landed 3 of the top 5 instate players (Hanner at LaLu, not really instate) almost got Crean fired and set the program back. As others have said it's about the right players not about the players closest to the university. How is Indiana relying on Boo Williams year after year? IU has landed Troy, RoJo, and CuJo from Boo, that's not dominating IU recruiting. IU has landed more instate players than from Boo, ditto for the Northeast. These days you need connections to several different regions. Again, I would hate for IU to lose players like TB, JMo, and OG because we were focusing on players from Indiana like Swan, KJ Walton, Ryan Cline, etc. -

When did Bowen and Jackson become instate guys? Isn't Bowen from Michigan and Jackson from the east coast with ties to UA? I can understand players like Wilkes, Scruggs, Williams, and Langford but not the others. Regardless, times and programs have changed. I would be perfectly happy to land a few of the top instate players in each class and then fill needs from other areas of the country. I would hate to miss on players like TB, JMo, OG, Vic, Sheehey and others because we wanted a player from Indiana. -
For IUFB to go bowling they need to... - win six games; or - drive/walk to the Union

Dude could board with the best of them. He played with that AJ Moye intensity. He definitely make my all intensity IU team! Happy birthday DJ!

AD Glass gets it, period. I might not always agree with his decisions but I don't see him as an AD who is going to dime someone out. Look at the way he uses I, we, and he! That's language from a leader. I know some think he's a fan boy or that athletics have declined under him but the program's seem to be headed in the right direction. He has a bowl game for football with an improving team He has two B1G titles and three sweet 16s. He has a national title in soccer. He has B1G titles in baseball with appearances at the CWS The women's basketball team has an appearance in the dance with a win for the first time in 25+ years. He has the Olympians, especially the BA Lily King He's getting money for facility upgrades that should help recruiting. - Cook Hall - Assembly Hall - NZE and soon SEZ - Bart Kaufman Field I would love to see all sporting facilities between 17th street and the bypass. If they get the funding for a new golf course Fred would be The Man!

It's difficult to judge though. If Holt stays do we end up with Maximus last season? Does DD look elsewhere? He had a unique skill set that could have played well next to TB. It's all in the past though. Wish we could cherry pick the instate players we want and then get the out of state players to fill needs. -

Along those same lines, two of Crean's best recruiting classes (2010 and 2015) involved lower ranked recruits from outside of Indiana. The Movement nearly got Crean fired. I don't think you can make a blanket statement for any state or region. I would prefer Crean stay instate if he can find the high quality kid on and off the court that fits his system. -
I'm ready for 2016 IU Football

Could you imagine how the excitement would grow and the buzz around campus would be if they were able to win that MSU game?! I might steal a wheelchair and go to the next home game! -
Are you stalking me Baby Bull? Where am I now....?

What state am I in?

Or on a well run/moderated site you deal with the problem. It has nothing to do with disagreeing and everything to do with being "that guy." It's like walking into someone's home with muddy shoes, most people realize that's impolite...
-
The oddity of X being on the board. 1). Has his own site 2). He's here more than there 3). He argues with any/everyone 4). He contradicts himself 5). Has caused people to stay away (Un)Fortunately, he's still around. It's fun to jump in and sling some mud around but then realize you feel kind of sorry for him. Glad things are getting back to normal with a solid group of posters.

Honestly, SDSU could be a power out in the west. Cal, UCLA, and UW are starting to pick it up their recruiting but for awhile it was just UA. At SDSU you could attract the western talent that wants to focus on just basketball. There defense has been good to great but their offense has been turrrble, most years, at best. Maybe we could hire Fischer as D-coordinator?
-
Can't believe Hollowell didn't end up in Colorado or Washington...
-
And now you've introduced something more than length, skill, size, and athleticism. Passion, desire, etc. to continue to get better is another aspect of recruiting what fits in your system.
-
The 2015 class was a fantastic get in terms of defense. Bryant had a difficult time adjusting the PNR early in the season but that's not uncommon for frosh bigs. JMo and OG have both instincts and ability to make them plus defenders. Bryant gave up some inside stuff by not doing work early. I don't see him having the same issues as a sophomore with most of the other bigs. I would call all of them plus defenders. I agree though, I would like to see a top 25 adjD this season. If they start approaching that area we're into the Elite 8+ area.
-
I know it's probably not common but when I think of "length" it's kind of part of size and athleticism. Draymond Green kind of exemplifies that for me. On a much more general level, it depends on your motives. Wisconsin has sacrificed athleticism and length in some areas for a higher skill level. Crean seems fascinated with length and athleticism while sacrificing high level skill. It takes something in between to win big.

So he's a PG? I mean I guess so. He handles the ball a lot. If Russ wasn't on the team he'd probably be the point.
-
He's like -- he's not like Magic Johnson at all -- but he's like Magic in that you can play him probably any of four positions, if not five. Playing the 2, he's not going to get beat up, box to box, the whole game." 2 guard makeup and mentality
