Top 5 POY Evaluations

Recommended Posts

Hello Btown Banners, I'm going to present a short analysis of the top 5 POY candidates. This breakdown is non-biased towards any team, and presents each player for you to decide the leading candidate. This is my first forum post -- so take it easy on me.

(Alphabetical order)

Trey Burke - 6' G Michigan 18.6 ppg 6.9 apg

+Controls the tempo better than anyone else in CBB. NBA level speed in open court. Can create his own shot very well. Ball handling very good. At his best when driving, spinning in the lane either to pass or shoot. However, Burke settles too much for long, contested shots, when he should penetrate can kick to open shooters. He looks to score too much IMO.

Doug McDermott - 6' 8" F Creighton 22.5 ppg 7.8 rpg

+Scoring machine. Very versatile. Very good range shooting at 48% from 3pt. Very strong in the post. Finishes at a high percentage around the rim. Nice midrange. He has a midrange fall away jumper that is pretty hard to stop. Creighton's recent struggle have hurt McDermott in the race. His conference is mid-major. His POY chances depend likely on how far he carries Creighton in the dance.

Victor Oladipo - 6' 5" G Indiana 14.0 ppg 2.4 spg

+Devensive nightmare. Can defend positions 1-4. 3pt shooting at 51%. Great rebounder for the guard position. Gets a lot of scrap points. Finishes at 63% from the field. Great midrange. Excels in transition. Plays hard, unbelievable energy he brings. NBA level explosiveness. However, Oladipo can force driving the ball to the rim too much at times. He also struggles to create his own shot.

Mason Plumlee - 6'10 F Duke 17.6 ppg 10.4 rpg

+Double-double machine. His scoring is very consistent. Gets a lot of put back points. Great rebounder. Probable more athletic than Zeller. Shoots 59% from the field. Great spin over his right right shoulder in the lane. Plumlee has been hurt by his lack to develop a jumper. He shoots free throws at 65% which is not great. Will need to be "The Man" for Duke during the post season to help his campaign.

Cody Zeller - 7' F Indiana 16.6 ppg 8.1 rpg

+Great all-around player. His size and mobility are rare for a seven footer. Put on extra muscle. Has added multiple weapons to his game over the year. Very nice turn around jumper in the lane. Has been shooting better from the midrange. Can attack one-on-one from the high post and short corner very well. Finishes with both hands. Indiana is overloaded with offensive firepower which limits Zeller's touches on the offensive end. He is an average post defender. The Hoosiers will need Zeller to carry the load and consistency throughout the tourney.

This was a short analysis of the five candidates before postseason. Each candidate still has enough time to change their resumes in the time remaining. Let me know your feed back, and have fun depicting your POY front runner.

Great breakdown!  I think you can eliminate Trey Burke from the discussion because they have played so poorly as a team.  I think a lot of being POY has to do with how your team does.  Michigan has been struggling as of late which I feel eliminates him from serious contention.

I'm biased as all high heaven, but I honestly think Victor wrapped it up against Michigan state.  His closing of that game was one on the most ridiculous spans in his career.  He couldn't be stopped, put the team on his back and won the game for the Hoosiers.  Victor Oladipo is the player of the year.  It's final.

Let's put it this way.  His play at Michigan State put OladiPOY in a great position to take over the race.  I believe that if he goes to Ann Arbor at the end of the year and dominates Trey Burke, OladiPOY will lock up the Player of the Year award(s).
