2026-27 Roster/Portal/how to fix the roster?
AH1971 replied to Asha’man's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
But not every situation can be looked at in a vacuum. If three teams have similar talent levels, but two of them have continuity, a fostered culture, and a familiarity with the coach/system while the other was thrown together in a 2-3 week period playing for a coach for the first time....who would you expect to fare better over the course of a 20 game conference slate? -

Wisconsin and Nebraska don’t have first year coaches who threw together rosters in a 2-3 week span. Thats a pretty glaring omission you’re conveniently leaving out. This years version of IU has one consensus top 100 recruit, a true freshman at that. It’s at best a mid-major all-star team physically outmatched in an elite conference. If next years roster looks like this years roster, I’ll start to worry. I don’t think it will however. -

I’d say IU’s talent composite is much closer to Minny and NW than it is UCLA who has largely underachieved this year with several top 100 recruits. Iowa has a potential lottery pick running its show and has fared slightly better than IU this year with an easier schedule. -

I would think both Kenny and Rod Clark have connections to him. St. Paul produces a ton of D1 prospects in the DMV where he played high school and Kenny has recruited at as an underclassmen before finishing up at Sunrise Christian in Wichita where Rod Clark previously coached. -

Kenny Johnson’s wheel house. Guessing Massamba Diop goes portaling after Hurley’s firing. Will likely be one of the best C prospects available, assuming he doesn’t go pro. -

Couple of players I hope the staff is watching tonight; Hofstra guards Cruz Davis and Preston Edmead along with Santa Clara guard Christian Hammond and F/C Allen Graves. -

Think it’s too early to make judgement on X’s and O’s until there’s competent personnel. We’re a bottom 4 team in terms of talent in the conference, and yes, I know DeVries picked the roster. Really tough to execute consistently on either end of the floor when you’re outmanned and outmatched on the court. Archie nor Woody would sniff the bubble with this talent make up, I think that at least says something. Willing to see what this offseason looks like with a full staff in place and not being force to start from scratch on the fly. -

I don’t hate the idea of Haralson but don’t like the idea of such a high usage guard being an absolute liability as a jump shooter. -

Saw Orme a fair amount at Carmel. Nice player who had a good year at Belmont. But he’s probably good where he’s at in Nashville. Not sure he’s Reed Bailey on a good day in this league. -

Different players but Singleton certainly got more out of his freshman year than Sisley. If Singleton had an even ok perimeter shot I’d probably lean his way but he doesn’t. But IU does need some help defensively in the front court and Singleton far ahead of Sisley in that regard. -
? The article states that they believe maybe only a handful of players will be making $4+/mil next year. If you have one of them, let alone two, you're probably an early title favorite. They expect all-conference caliber players to go for $2-2.5/mil up to $3mil. IU can easily afford two of those, maybe three. edit: see Jersey beat me to the punch

It's the reason why you hire Drew Adams. He needs to deliver. On a related note and while we're on rumors, heard from a good buddy who is still pretty well connected to the local basketball scene in the area that Tre Singleton could be available this offseason. He along with his high school teammate Michael Cooper have expressed interest playing with one another. Singleton has had a pretty solid freshman campaign absent perimeter shooting and would definitely add an element of toughness and athleticism to the front court. Don't know much about Cooper other than his stats suggest he's had a pretty terrific year at Wright State. Would seem to fill the backup PG need for next year with the potential for an expanded role as an upperclassmen. Didn't say if IU was in the mix or not. Maybe Cooper just ends up at Northwestern. -

-3 freshman $300-400k -Miles/Sisley $400-500k -Dorn as potential 5th starter/6th man $500-750k From that group alone you potentially have a starter and 2-3 key depth/rotation pieces and collectively have only spent $2-3mil. Against a $12mil budget, you have $9-10 million to add 5, maybe 6 players depending on how the staff feel about Drake and Harris who will command very little. You have enough to buy an elite big ($2.5-3mil), an elite guard ($2.5-3mil) a 2nd really good guard ($1.5-2mil), a serviceable backup big ($500-750k), and a 4 man. -

It’s not the same. We vastly overpaid for Conerway and Bailey this year. There’s a chance that guys 6-9 on the bench this next year are collectively making equal or less than what those two made this year. Reality is that IU has to “pay” for 3 high end portal guys this year and then supplement 2-3 complimentary/depth pieces. IU has a larger budget and needs less players (from the portal). -

So $8.3 million for about 4-6 portal players vs $10 million for 12 players last year? How is this possible @WayneFleekHoosier -

Everybody is getting paid, but the freshmen aren’t making “bank”. Non-5* freshman aren’t sniffing 7 figures. Everybody you listed above with the exception of maybe Dorn will be making less than $500k next year. I will assure you IU’s 6th and 7th man next year won’t be making 7 figures like they are this year. Our top 7-8 paid players from this year are all gone. IU won’t be adding 8 new players from the portal. It’s just math. -

The 3 freshman coming in + the possibility of Sisley, Dorn, Miles and maybe a few more aren’t going to command anywhere near the pool of money that it would if you were building a roster from scratch. That’s 6-8 guys who are depth/development pieces on next years roster. We’re likely paying our 6th and 7th players (Conerway/Bailey) this year close to 7 figures each. IU is going to have more money to spend on less players this coming portal season because they aren’t starting from scratch. -

We don't need nor are going to get $20 million for a basketball roster. Retaining 3-4 guys + the incoming freshman, should give us ~$8-9mil to get 3 high impact guys and a couple depth pieces. -

Javon Small went from an unknown to NBA draft pick currently getting run with the Grizzlies and Lamar Wilkerson will almost assuredly get the same chance. Wilkerson is a NPOY candidate if he played on a contending team. I don’t think attracting guards and shooters is going to be an issue for DeVries going forward. But he needs to commit to a front court that can hold their own in this conference. I do believe he underestimated the size and strength of the bigs in this league. -
I can't tell if this is real or not?

Who knows. He's currently being recruited over as we speak as Purdue just signed Alec Pierce younger brother who was Ivy League POY last year. Both shoot similar percentages, Dorn on better volume. Neither can really dribble. Give me the experienced guy with a year in DeVries system. If Benter is starting for Purdue next year I like our chances to at least split with them again. -

And was shooting 48% on volume and playing like one of the better players in the conference the two weeks prior. Obviously you want more consistency out of Dorn, but I don't think IU is in any position to tell a high volume shooter that hits at a decent clip that there isn't a spot for him next year. You want to start completely over? -

Reneau is much better than serviceable. He’s averaging 19 a game and has been one of the most effective inside scorers in the country during his college tenure. We’re a top 20 team with Reneau. -

He's 38% for the year on good volume. There's a role for that on every team.
