That's more than likely the case or they knew they can get someone like Fru for $3million. Fru and Estrella have near identical player profiles. Same size, same body, similar athleticism. Production almost identical with Fru being lower usage player. Fru has a slightly better DReb rate while Estrella a slightly better OReb rate. Fru's block rate nearly 3x better than Estrella. Sometimes on overpay is warranted, not sure Estrella is in this case, especially if they have interests in similar profiles that will command less money.

By IU, you mean donors and boosters correct? IU has only X amount of dollars to allocate towards player compensation via revenue sharing and the majority of that money is going towards the football program where it should be anyway. The basketball staff will spend what money it has but they just can’t ask the administration for an endless amount.

Safe to say Louisville, BYU, etc haven’t sunk a majority of their resources into a national championship caliber football program and coach and because of that are better equipped to spend on basketball? The narrative on Iowa is sickening. They were .500 in the B10 with losses to bottom feeders Penn State and Maryland despite having a very favorable conference schedule. They had a nice tournament run but as we know a single tournament run doesn’t define a coach.

Is Estrella someone you overpay for? Genuinely asking? I think he’s solid no doubt but a big man with a history of foot injuries isn’t something to take lightly. It’s rumored he got somewhere between $2.5-3mil to go to Michigan? Is he worth $3.5-$4mil to IU? I don’t know that he is, especially if Fru is asking ~$3mil who I think is better.

To an extent yes. More than likely each program's scouting department compiles a list and charts player profiles that are similar. I'm sure the reaching out part is to get financial info and whether or not the price makes any kind of sense to pusue further.

As underwhelming as Tucker was last year, Tucker would make Olsen look like a JV player. Tucker had a decent handle who could facilitate from the point and still rebounded at a decent clip despite being undersized. Olsen gives you nothing offensively other than shooting and his defensive metrics are about as poor as it gets.

Of course. Most people learn how to crawl before they walk though. That’s still true even using the most extreme outlier.

IU has played in the NCAA tournament twice in the last 10 years. Again, I don’t know where you get off thinking the floor for nexts years team should be a 5 seed?

This staff needs to worry about assembling a roster that can comfortably make the tournament first and foremost next year, not trying to emulate Michigan or UConn. It’s not happening.

If your expectation for this portal haul is building a roster that competes for a national title next year you’re simply setting yourself up for failure. It isn’t happening.

That’s why it’s important to lock down guys like Burton, Estrella, Brumbaugh, etc down now. Getting into bidding wars for Flory, Haralson, Blackwell, etc could mean you end up losing out on quality guys above that already have strong connections to the staff.

IU needs a brand new roster, they can’t afford to big fish spend right now and get stuck with no catch.

Burton is currently rated a top 10 overall player in the portal and Estrella and Fru are both top 5-6 guys at their position. How much do you think these guys cost? They aren’t cheap.

That’s your conclusion not even 12 hours into this thing being officially open? On the other hand I’m not surprised either. A backcourt of Burton, Brumbaugh, and maybe someone like Mustaf would be massive upgrades from last year. So would adding Estrella and/or Fru. Throw in the South Alabama kid and another backup C with some size and your 1-8 is decidedly better than last year.
