(2024) - SF Bryson Tucker to Washington via Portal
JF87 replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Sounds like we are his top bidder so far. :) -
Looking at the Kenpom top 50 teams, there just aren't a lot of big name or proven coaches that you can see moving from their current schools. Pearl and Brian Dutcher are 64 already and the rest wouldn't meet the big name or proven coach requirement that people want to put on the program. Chris Collins might be the best we could get. This is why missing on Dusty was so frustrating to me and many on this board.

This would mean Reneau at the 5 or coming off the bench. Defensively, Reneau cannot play the 5 against good teams or teams with a large post player. I'm just not seeing us as a fit for Tucker unless MgBako goes pro. I just don't see Tucker going anywhere without being promised a starting role.
-
Yes. Continuity is important to teach the newer players the defensive rotations. We also need 13 scholarship players and without developmental freshmen, it will be hard to fill scholarships 11-13 in the portal.
-
At this point, do they really believe in his abilities or are they just unwilling to admit they were wrong, and they are going to see if they can buy Woodson a team to save face?
-
Where does Bryson Tucker fit? He's a 5 star who will most likely be guaranteed starting wherever he goes. It looks like he could play the 2 or 3. I think Reneau will mostly play the 4 this year. Assuming we bring in a starting center that would leave Reneau at 4, Mgbako the 3 and Tucker the 2. That means a portal point guard with Galloway backing up the 3, 2, and 1; Leal backing up the 2 and 3, Cupps backing up the 1, and Newton backing up the 2. If we get Tucker, I'm not seeing a lot of guard minutes for any incoming transfer outside of a starting point guard. Not sure where any small school guards are going to compete for minutes if we get Tucker.

I'm waiting on some Purdue players to hit the portal. I'd take Gillis and Caleb Furst. -

Okay, I've decided that I'm going to throw a lifeline to the Louisville AD and give him two names to hire. Option 1 should be Chris Collins. I think Collins would a great coach with better resources. Option 2 would be Tommy Amaker. There were many that thought he would get the Duke job when coach K retired. I think Amaker has improved as a coach since the days when he failed at Michigan. -

From what I read, Bryson is athletic with a mid-range game. Almost sounds like a Romeo Langford in the description of his game. -
I'm not sure why people are getting worked up about the accuracy of what people have heard and reported. This is the cable news generation. I don't care how accurate the report is as long as it agrees with the narrative that I want to hear.

I think you are right. They are going to offer a known name a huge amount of money or it will be a surprise candidate like Mark Turgeon. -
So, I can't say that Kelvin Sampson is three times the coach that Mike Woodson is without showing my math?
-
These players wouldn't know that we have a $hitty offense if the toxic IU fans would quit complaining about it! DWS

I love Cignetti. It seems like he's all in for IU. (fixed it)

I see Cupps as a Brad Davison type when he is a Junior and Senior. He'll be that pesky player that opposing teams don't like. Cupps may never be a big scorer but will hit enough threes to keep teams honest. -

I wish. That doesn't seem to be the case anymore. -
Oats' team played very little defense this year. Last year, Alabama was ranked 3rd in adjusted defense in Kenpom.

Certainly not Scott Dolson or Quinn Buckner. :)

Banks did seem like a good young man with potential. I believe that he, Gunn, and Leal were on the IU all-academic team. I'm not sure why our bench players haven't developed. Our starters seem to develop, but I don't believe that we've seen much development in bench players the last couple of years.

You're missing the point. More qualified or proven P5 coaches like Musselman, aren't looking for lateral moves. Wade can recruit and coach, but Louisville is in this mess because Pitino skirted the rules. I would think they would be wary of Wade for this reason. -

Okay ISP, we need an update. I believe that you said that Essegian likes IU, but Butler and Notre Dame were more likely. Is that still the case? I would assume that he's looking for playing time and a promise of at least a rotational role. -

I guess part of Louisville's fanbase thinks that "proven coaches" leave good jobs for rebuilds all the time too. -
Yes, but will that shiny bauble have connections to Indiana high school coaches and Indiana AAU programs? Possibly, but that was part of the allure of Dusty that too many want to gloss over.

Devries is a brave man with Huggins still hanging around the program. Fan base could turn quickly if Devries doesn't win right away.
