  1. Where’s the Kelvin Sampson thread?
  2. Is this supposed to be some kind of excuse for IU? Very unlikely UVA is doing anything that IU isn’t.
  3. I absolutely love how reactionary message boards are.
  4. More I think about it, Dane Fife is the likely play.
  5. More or less at similar junctures in their career. Both are/were not going anywhere with their current team thanks to front office failures. So the next move, and there will be a next move, is gonna come and either be another pro spot or college. Saban was convinced to come back to college even though he never thought he would and his goal was to win the SB. Hell, Saban accomplished a lot more than Stevens in his first stint in the college game, had nothing to prove , and still came back. I’m not one that thinks Stevens is coming, but the parallel with Saban is there beyond the denials. Who knows what Stevens wants and if it’s even the same as he wanted a year ago, 8 years ago or a month ago. He hasn’t won a championship at any level. Doesn’t look like he will with the Celtics. And while he’s capable enough at a coach, in the NBA you realistically have to have a top 2 or 3 roster to do so and the coach has little control over that. I wouldn’t rule out a return to college for him eventually even if he doesn’t want to today.
  6. I can almost guarantee you that the AD isn’t vetting coaching through disgruntled transferred players. I have no idea if it’s Musselman, but Justin Smith won’t have a thing to do with the search.
  7. Doesn’t seem to hurt Gonzaga or Duke. Don’t think recruiting is a con at Indiana unless you want to blatantly cheat. The only thing holding recruiting back at IU is the one doing the recruiting.
  8. When the Thad Matta stuff leaked, IU sure did a good job of reaching out to reporters to try and control the story. Guess you just can’t refute all the rumors.
  9. Yes. If I had to choose, I’d take UCLA over following coach K. But it never comes down to that. Those jobs are rarely open, especially at the same time. So yes, when one comes up a type A top tier coach will jump. But objectively, following K will be a killer... no matter how good the coach.
  10. Now do the number of titles this century. B1G is a deep conf, but not a top heavy one.
  11. Meh... top tier coaches and type A personalities don’t think like that. They all think they’re the best or they wouldn’t take the job. You can spin it out self rationalize it anyway you want. The truth is, while the UCLA and IU jobs are down right now they’re infinitely more desirable than following coach K when he retires. Or Roy Williams. Those jobs are “great” but the situations following them aren’t.
  12. IU’s still a top 5-6 job. Problem is that a top 5 job requires a top 5 coach. Top 10 at worst. Otherwise it’s like letting a 15 yr permit holder drive a Porche 911. Not only are they not going to maximize the potential, all the mistakes are going to be amplified trying to drive 200mph. UCLA has steered the same fate. UNC the same (old Dean buddy and Dohrety) at times. UK has too (BCG). None of the blue bloods excel without a top coach. IUs a top job but you can’t fit a second tier coach into a first tier job. It’s always about timing for places like IU. That’s why Glass is such a loser for not dumping Crean for Stevens very early. All basketball people knew Stevens was superior. Then extending Crean on top of that was insane , but I’m not sure who’d they hire. Not that many top ten coaches out there (I’d estimate about ten...ha). All about timing.
  13. McDermont is in trouble for comments not much different than Beilien. Thus, I don’t get all the Beilein hype.
  14. TJD is all B1G Lander is a promising freshman Phin has the talent to be an all B1G guard if he gets his head right (maybe a new coach helps?). There’s just not much upside to a mass exodus of talent.
  15. Even by that logic, Fife is the presumptive choice then unless he turns us down.
  16. Agree. But it’s also a reason this is a bad year to dismiss a coach and go into a protracted search. We’re probably not to “protracted “ status yet, but if these other coaches start getting snapped up before we have someone who knows what a kid might do.
  17. Good god.... I’d rather see Assembly Hall burn down than have another Crean-esque used car salesman on the sidelines again. Did he try and sell one of his players a used Buick Lebaron convertible after that?
  18. A segment on a crappy ESPN show is about all this is worth. 5 days ago and 99% of IU fans couldn’t have picked this guy out of a cocktail party in their own living room. I would be disappointed in Dolson if he goes for the flavor of the month.
  19. Sports writers aren’t known for their intelligence.
  20. Nailed it. He’s awful. Better off taking a flyer on a guy like Fife than a retread like Turgeon where you lnow his ceiling is bad coach/decent recruiter.
  21. You think saying she’s far less experienced than Mike Woodson is “baseless?” Your unc friends feelings on hammond do not outweigh the discrepancy in their resumes. Sorry, but you’re not even trying to be logical. you want to get on your soap box about how unfair the world is, so go ahead.
  22. I think I wrote it earlier, but his head coaching stints were better than the records indicate. Even in Atlanta they bottomed out after Wilkens retired. Brought in Stotts and lon kruger. Then Woodson. He built them up into playoff teams and had their best years until they brought budenholzer in and he had that one great year. Him and Bud each have 2 of their 4 best years out of the last two decades. And Bud is highly respected and currently coaches the Bucks. His first two Hawks years were rebuilds and drags down his overall record. People just looking at his record and dismissing his coaching acumen do not know what they are talking about. Personally, I would hope IU had better college candidates lined up. But not liking him as a candidate is no reason to run down a successful alum like a lot of message board fans have. He’s well respected in the league. Much more than guys like Musselman or Becky Hammons for petes sake.
  23. Another reason not to hire her is having to put up with ridiculous missives like this. She’s not even remotely qualified, but anyone pointing that out “can’t handle a female coach.” Maybe she can take over for Ol Roy if your tarheel friends are so high on her.
  24. He’s the exact type of coach to do that. Anyone wanting Becky Hammon over a guy like Woodson ought to have their head examined but only as a perfunctory step to the lobotomy.
  25. I see it as three main “buckets” of current issues. 1. pay- I think the likeness thing will take this off the table, and quite frankly I’m fine with that. These guys should be able to profit off if their own image and/or fame. 2. Grades - I’ll never support a diploma mill type situation. Otoh, I get that some of these kids aren’t scholars. As long as they are actually required to do something towards a real degree, work at it (even with heavy tutoring), and learn some life skills along the way I can live with it. 3. Character- I’ll never put up with and support a program that coddles borderline violent criminals because they can play ball. Indiana has been really lucky to have a long history of pretty high character guys. The Zellers, VOs, JJs, Damon Baileys, Chaneys, Hendersons, etc... We could go further back too. Some of our best players have been our best character guys. I do not think we should, nor have to, deviate from that standard to have a good team.
