Sadly, I think, because of who he is, he will be given every opportunity to right the ship. No matter how unlikely it is, it’s still possible they could win the Big Ten tournament. There’s like a .000001 percent chance, but it’s still possible. -

That's kinda where I am. The thought of hoping to lose is hard to stomach, but I feel like there can be no doubt left at the end of the season. He's gotta go. -

This is where I saw that, just for reference. Maybe it's not "most likely" but could be a possibility to get him here to begin with. Second paragraph: -

If it ended up being Pearl, most likely his son would be his successor, assuming things went decently when Pearl was coaching here. -

It's difficult to tell. It's not uncommon for the first season at a new place to be rough. First year at Penn St was rough, then the second year they were much improved. Then he left. First year at ND has been rough, but next year they could do the same an be much improved. Really hard to gauge. -

That, and he seems like the most realistic option to me. Great coach, ties to IU (for those that care), knows Dolson, and possibly most importantly, to the university anyway (and boosters), he would be the cheapest option it seems. No buyout (vs. Pear's, Cronin's large buyouts) I would think would be huge after just having spent $15.5 million to get rid of Tom Allen. -

I remember that also. It was Gregg Marshall vs Archie...winner get's the IU job lol. I think that might have also been the game where Marshall's wife was a weeeeeee bit intoxicated and making an a** of herself. -

I think it's because as terrible as they are playing, it's looking more and more like they are going to lose out the rest of the way. -

And, as I think someone else said, he didn't have the portal early on at Auburn. You'd have to imagine that Bruce Pearl + IU + IU NIL money would definitely be attractive to transfers. -

Maybe Dolson already told Dusty that we're hiring Pearl. -

I'm skeptical IU would actually get Pearl. If they did, I believe the "bridge" guy would be his son. I've read his son is next in line at Auburn as it stands. He's an assistant coach there now currently I believe. -

Guess I'll go ahead and prepay my commitment as well. I feel this is appropriate under the circumstances. -

You're not wrong, but I don't know that we've seen this type of trajectory at the end of year 3 before. We're in a free fall with no parachute. -

I had the thought that maybe Cronin could be a solution. He's pretty "proven" and doesn't seem to have any baggage (that I'm aware of). He's also from the midwest. Salary is reasonable ($4 million I believe). But then I saw his buyout: $16 million after March 31st.....yikes. So $8.5 for Woody, $16 for Cronin...nope, not happening. -

Wow. Thank you for doing the numbers on that. I knew we've been bad (obviously), but not that bad, and not for that long. That's very depressing. I'm still hanging on to Crean's last successful seasons in my memory. -

Serious question: What proven guy are we going to hire? Beard = doubtful because of baggage Pearl = doubtful because of baggage and buyout Drew = maybe?, but he’s got a good thing going and apparently isn’t liked by Indiana high school coaches -

Seems like our only hope is he "retires," maybe with some sore of negotiated buyout instead. $12 million seems steep after just paying, what, $10 million for Archie's just a few years ago? However, I don't know a damn thing so maybe (hopefully) I'm wrong. I'm also not sure they'd fire a loved former player either, after technically just one down year (even though it''s REALLY down). Edit: sorry, I just saw where others pretty much said this already. -

Well said. It's kind of like drafting a quarterback in the NFL. Most of top drafted quarterbacks don't end up being generational talents, but you still need to keep taking a swing at getting one of those. If you get the quarterback right, everything else follows. Same here, get the right coach (for the love of God let the next one be the right one) and everything else falls into place. -
