The championship was not vacated because it took place the year before all of the serious events. If it had taken place two years later, it would be vacated. The only allegations regarding the 2002-03 season are extra basketball tickets being given away. Billy Edelin was part of the championship team, but after he was suspended the first time he complied with all NCAA rules to be reinstated to that team. The alleged improper conduct began after he won a championship. So, saying they cheated to win a championship isn't exactly true unless you know something the NCAA doesn't. "the institution will vacate all wins from the academic years 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2010-11 and 2011-12 in men's basketball and 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2006-07 in football in which student-athletes 1 through 10 competed while ineligible. This order of vacation includes all regular season competition, conference tournaments and NCAA postseason competition." This is the second most vacated wins of all time. JB was forbidden from participating in any team activities for the first half of the conference season, tied for the harshest individual punishment issued on a coach short of a show-cause penalty. He did not receive a show cause penalty, because there was no proof of actual knowledge, just the imputed knowledge of a head coach. The recruitment penalties were heavy too, besides the publicized loss of 12 scholarships they lost 2 off-campus recruiters, have to give all visiting recruits in football or basketball full information about the violations and penalties. Syracuse also revamped huge portions of the programs in question which the NCAA really cares about. Syracuse's violations were far less severe than what UNC is accused of too. Louisville's are probably less than Syracuse's by the end, though I'm interested to see exactly what allegations they go with. Here is a PDF of the Syracuse decision, beginning on page 62. http://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/Syracuse%20Final%20Public%20Infractions%20Decision%20%28Corrected%29.pdf

Carefully taking into account PSU's KenPom numbers relative to Iowa's and projecting our performance using mathematical calculations and advanced science... Since we were unable to beat a weak PSU team on the road and are now facing a top-ranked Iowa team at home the score will be... Indiana - 91 Iowa - 59 Because why the fuck not.

I know it's a little off-topic, but since this comes up a lot in these discussions (and has before in this thread) I just think it would be beneficial to remind people... The NCAA has not let UNC or Louisville off the hook for anything. There is absolutely no indication UNC or Louisville will not be punished by the NCAA other than the story line of "the NCAA never punishes blue chip programs". The NCAA is not a monolithic entity and these sweeping generalizations are not necessarily wrong, but they also aren't facts. Last I heard/checked, UNC is still in the late discovery phase of their proceeding with hundreds of charges leveled in the Notice of Allegations and hundreds of thousands of documents being sorted through. The NCAA optimistically expected to be able to provide a better picture of UNC's situation sooner, but some self-reported infractions late last year resulted in delay as they now have to be included in the investigation. While this is a quasi-legal proceeding, I can say from similar experiences (as offensive as it may be to relate them) cases the size of UNCs could take years and no one involved would blink. The speed at which the NCAA renders a decision and then goes through the appeals process is ridiculously fast by comparison. Louisville is even earlier in their proceeding, I have not heard they even received their Notice of Allegations in this case. They'll also be hammered hard because they are still under investigation for football recruiting violations. Pitino is on the hook with the NCAA unless he can affirmatively prove otherwise because there is an rebuttable presumption of knowledge that says head coaches know what their underlings are doing. So, Pitino has to show he did not know what was done in his administration. Syracuse is an example of where this was recently applied (JB's 9-game ban). While Syracuse's punishment may seem light, it's actually one of the harshest in recent NCAA history. As people have discussed throughout this thread, part of the problem is there is so little you can really do to punish coaches and others who benefited from the infractions. Players who benefited are already gone so, maybe vacate their wins. Current players are viewed as being punished with scholarship reductions or post-season bans. Coaches are insulated from personal liability and can continue to coach as long as people will pay them.

50th Super Bowl thread

Oh, well at least it's not all based on allegations of one party who was actively engaged in a lawsuit against Manning and then assumptions based on a closed settlement on a different issue. I mean, one of those cites goes to The Inquisitr. I don't care about Peyton, so either way, but anytime the source is a plaintiff's complaint (or defendant's response) then that is not a real source. A document intentionally written to highlight the worst allegations is not a reliable way to determine facts. Ultimately, the lawsuits filed were an employment dispute and a defamation suit, so even if settlement was conclusive, it would not actually tell anything about whether the incident occurred as Manning said or as the trainer said. Granted, against a public figure who needs more than a complaint and a settlement? You can use your complaint to feed news agencies, use those stories to write wikipedia entries, feed those entries to the news, and then just crucify them in the court of public opinion. The instant nature of the internet and people's total willingness to believe anything reported by a vaguely reliable looking source without ever looking for or reading corrections or contradictions means going through with the actual lawsuit is unnecessary and outdated. If it fits people's narratives, they'll believe it no matter what. For the most obvious controversial examples look no further than anti-vaxxers or birthers, but the more subtle versions are far more insidious and damaging to our society. For an example of when the accused threw a ridiculous amount of money at the situation (and the accuser could not just settle away because of a criminal case) see the Duke Lacrosse Scandal. Generally, a good rule of thumb is if something criminal occurred, see if criminal proceedings are taking place as well. If not, increase your suspicions. If so, see how they turned out. -

Now teach them the hearsay exceptions. Also, I'll just note, hearsay is any out-of-court statement offered to prove the truth of the statement. So, literally every statement made right now is going to either be hearsay or a hearsay exception. I'd say the remedial measures exclusionary rule would be relevant too, I mean, if we were actually in court.

I'd just like to note before we start quibbling about the law, I don't think anyone here has gotten any legal or quasi-legal aspect right so far. I'm not going to correct you, because it amuses me and I wasted all my dick-around time on that long response to Hutch's article, but just thought you should know.

In defense of the 2012-13 team (and a little in defense of fans like myself), the situations are comparable, but distinguishable. The 2012-13 team went into Illinois off their great win against Michigan and looking ahead to traveling to Ohio State, no doubt. It was the definition of a trap game. But, they were also playing an Illinois team who wasn’t ranked, but they weren’t bottomfeeders either. KenPom had them at 56th, but they had beaten a top-10 ranked OSU (an Elite Eight team) and a top-10 ranked Gonzaga earlier in the year. Ironically two teams who were knocked out of the tourney by that white-hot Witchita State team, but I digress. Illinois closed the second half of the Big Ten season going 6-3. Gonzaga entered the Tourney at 32-2 with Illinois as one of those losses. They weren’t a great team, they weren’t top of the pack, but they were a tournament team. Losing to them was heartbreaking and I won’t forget watching the last shot go in on the easy lay-up, but it’s much more akin to losing to Michigan earlier this week. Penn State is 148th in KenPom. Their best win is at 86th ranked Northwestern. They don’t have any other wins within the Top-100… or Top-140. Sure, maybe this is the game they get hot and turn their whole season around but… it sure does not look like it. They’re sick (don’t kiss any of the players) and injured and generally having a terrible terrible season. Iowa destroyed them without breaking a sweat and if we want a nice protected seed, we should be doing the same. But, I get it, upsets happen every day and I was at the Penn State game two years ago and experienced the worst basketball feelings. So, I don’t want the players looking past this game, they have to stay focused and take each team as they are put in front of them. As a fan though… there is only so much you can ask of me. There are three ways this game can go: 1) We dominate and win by 30; 2) We struggle and barely squeak one out; 3) We lose. None of those are fun options. Beating them like we should makes for nice basketball to watch, but eventually it’s just like playing another cupcake. Whether they call themselves Penn State or Austin Peay, watching a college team play against an intermural squad is not an experience anyone gets pumped about after the first 15 times. Struggling means another game of nervousness, not knowing how the team will fare in future matchups, arguments about the players, nail-biting the whole time, anger at our defense, anger at our offense, generally just negative garbage but us all reassuring each other afterwards with a “Don’t care how we get the W, just glad we got it”. Losing means all of the struggle and the pain of losing. The doubt and frustration with the team. Losing a game you should win easily is a horrible experience. So, which option should we look forward to? Which option should we focus on so we don’t start looking at Iowa and saying “there is going to be a great game, I can’t wait to watch some real basketball”? Don’t get me wrong, I love how the team is playing this year, I love everything they are doing, but this season has been a struggle in a lot of spoiled fan ways. It’s great watching the team win and play better together, but eventually you just want them to play someone. It’s the same feeling we all get towards the end of the non-con season. Like, finally, we will get to watch a basketball game instead of one dominant team beating up on some kids who don’t want to be there. Michigan was a great appetizer, but I am anxious and hungry for the main course. I want the meat of the schedule. So, maybe the waiter put this Penn State salad in front of me and I’ll begrudgingly eat it, but there is little opportunity for enjoyment. I just want it off my plate so I can get chowing down. Boy, I did not expect that to be so long. I sure hope I turned off my timer and didn’t bill someone for that…

OG vs Troy - Who Should Start
MartintheMopMan replied to JaybobHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I didn't read... any of this... so my opinions has probably already been expressed but... I feel like Troy has more upside right now as long as he's utilized correctly. Troy is not the PG, Troy does not need to be a ball handler (heh). Troy is unbeatable from the baseline and truly gifted when he is given the opportunity to look for open space and exploit it. I think Troy is being asked to do too much and it's far outside of his skillset. If we ask Troy to be the same player he was for the last 3/4s of the Michigan game, there is no one on the floor who can compete with his ability to score. If we ask Troy to be the PG, it's beyond him. I know Crean likes all-position guards, but that's just not Troy. -

I hope the boys are more disciplined than I am. I want to not look past this game but just can't help it. I feel like a little kid who wants to stomp his feet and whine "I don't care about Penn State! I want to see Ioooooooowa!" This whole post-Duke season has been fun and exciting and watching this team dismantle lesser teams is great and everything and I totally want us to lead by 40 at the half but... man I really want to see us shine against real competition. I want us to continue our absolute dominance of ranked teams in Assembly Hall. I want to excitedly run around my house yelling and wake my daughter up when we destroy Iowa and spend the rest of the night looking up flights to Houston. Between seeing all the recent off-season development of the football team, the major changes in 49ers land, and this massive Hoosier turnaround but not playing any top-25 teams, it's like I'm being sports-teased and dagnabit I want some sports-climax!

Column: IU continues to grow against Michigan
MartintheMopMan replied to hmhernan's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Not Hutch. Oh my gosh Jay, how many times do we have to tell you to learn to read? You nailed it right here. This is the biggest change we've seen since those loses. This team is tough, when they get behind on the road, they aren't just going to pack it in and decide they've lost the game. Crean is willing to call a needed timeout, use the timeout to make adjustments, and the team responds to the adjustments and improves. I don't think we've ever seen this before in the Crean era and the change is dramatic. Even the Oladipo years, trailing by 11 at Michigan and being just trounced in those first 5 minutes would have set the tone for the rest of the game. These guys are saying they get to set the tone no matter what and it makes all the difference. -
Not surprising at all. The line between them and Oklahoma is razor thin and Oklahoma's defense is not great, so teams like TCU hang around and score 72 while Iowa shuts down teams like Penn State. Plus, Iowa just has more big wins than Oklahoma even has a chance to collect. The sweep of MSU and Purdue is better than any four wins of Oklahoma's. Iowa is carried by Uthoff though, I hope the team studies the Maryland tape to see how to shut him down. We stop Uthoff, we stop Iowa.

Mostly I just have too much knowledge about cooking and eating predators. It's rare to have an opportunity to display it. I understand how my mention of the dentist would make you believe I was talking about the African lion, but I was talking about the mountain lion. I do not know of any suppliers of African lion except a couple highly specialized restaurants. As far as I know, the average consumer cannot purchase raw African lion. Mountain lions (in many states) can be hunted, killed, dressed, and eaten. I believe most domestic lion meat comes from Montana, who have a similar tag system to Louisiana's Gator Tags. And a Hawkeye is not an animal, just a weird reference to a Native American chief. Though, I guess they have adopted the hawk mascot, and blackened would be a nice way to serve hawk. -

You should never fry lion, the moisture content of the meat and lack of marbling will lead to very tough and an extremely gamey taste. Lion should be roasted, grilled, or prepared on the stove-top in a cast iron skillet. You're going to want to add a fat, I'd suggest bacon grease, but if you're talking to your lion supplier and they have fat from another predator, you have to go with it. The flavor profile will change with the addition of prey, so it's all about what you're looking for. If you have the opportunity to eat a whole lion, the best method of preparation is to field dress it with the skin on and cook it on a spit over an open fire for about 4 hours. The skin keeps what little fat the lion has against the meat and will give you the best overall taste and texture. It will be less gamey this way too, similar to a coyote if cooked the same way. Either way, lion is just coming out of season so Saturday will be one of your last chances. Nicky USA, our local supplier, has been out of stock for most of the season. Lion has been difficult to stock and price with the recent publicity over that dentist. Nicky USA is considering not restocking it and has removed it from their product list for the time being. -

Your banker and broker are wrong in my jurisdiction at least. Also, I'd say 80% or more of "faxes" are now e-mails sent through a third-party intermediary who gives the option of hooking up a fax machine/automatic printing. Traditional fax machines are nearly dead. More importantly, this thread makes me happy. -

Anyone know the NCAA record for largest run while holding the opponent scoreless in conference play? I know the record for FG% is 74% (TB is still just barely beating it). They don't measure it by only conference play: SCORING RUN VS. A DIVISION I OPPONENT 39-0—Oklahoma vs. Weber St., Dec. 22, 2014 (led 10-4 with 13:23 left in the first half and run ended at 49-4 at 1:53) Wow, that would have been just unlikely. Well, the team last night would have done that against Weber State. -

As I'm sure no one noticed, I was away for pretty much the entire game yesterday. But, I watched it from tip, what ended up happening was the kid was still awake and I was fixing her dinner for oh, about the first 5-7 minutes of the game. Then, we had a timeout and I sat down on the edge of the couch in an uncomfortable but quick response without losing sight of the TV spot. Spent right up until Burton took the court in that spot because everything I know about sports said if I sat anywhere else then it would be our downfall. So, I hear you. Better position to be in than you, but I hear you.
